GASSENDI (Pierre)
Amsterdam, Apud Ludovicum Elzevirium [Amsterdam, Louis Elzevier], 1649.. (Cf. Jammes, 'Libertins erudits', n° 160. Pintard, n°757. Willems, 1085). Bel exemplaire, tres frais, tres bien relie a l'epoque..

[Brazil] [Dutch West India Company]
Early tract on the activities of the Dutch West India Company in Brazil. 1649. Amsterdam. Abraham de Bruyn. In 4to (197 mm x 145 mm). 36. Later half vellum, a little rubbed. Some age toning, else fine, modern bookplate on front pastedown. First edition. A Meticulously framed response to the skillfully-framed Portuguese black propaganda: ?Copye vande resolutie van de heeren burgemeesters ende raden tot Amsterdam?, a fictitious account of a meeting of the Amsterdam municipal council published the same year. The propaganda claimed the cessation of financial support of the Dutch West India Company; this work translates to "Examination of the false resolution of the Burgomasters and council of Amsterdam on the question of the West India Company". The author refutes the accusation that the Burgomasters of Amsterdam were in favor of abandoning their financial support to the Dutch West India Company after the Portuguese Rising in Brazil, an act which would have penurised many small investors in the scheme. J. Janssonius
Amsterdam: Koeman, 1649. Map. Very Good. 14-3/4 x 19-1/2 inches. Beautifully detailed copper plate engraving of the Central Netherlands, composed by famed Dutch cartographer, Jan Janssonius. Extremely rare edition of this chart where the three great rivers flow to within a few kilometers of each below Wesel. The scale allows most of the larger towns to be depicted by miniature plans showing fortifications. Title cartouche in bottom right of upper chart. Scale displayed in center. Extracted from Koemans Atlantes Neerlandici and containing text from the atlas on reverse of sheet. The original plates for this map were later acquired by Willem Blaeu, who then used them for his own, more modern cartographic publications. Minor discoloration to page. Slight chipping, mostly across top border, but not affecting the body of the chart. Vertical center crease from atlas extraction. Overall, a superior and extremely rare map in excellent condition.

(CHARLES 1, KING OF ENGLAND)
No Place: No Publisher, 1649. Front and rear covers with the initials "CR" and a portrait of Charles 1 with a death's head in gilt. Double fillet gilt borders with corner winged angels. Front joint tender but intact. Old armorial book-plate on front pastedown. Pencilled notes on front free endpaper. Title-page in red and black. Folding engraved plate by Marshall showing the King at his devotions. The plate is quite crisp and clean. All edges gilt. Pp. 273-278 are mis-numbered 173-178. 279pp. This is a presentation copy from Charles II. Many editions of the book were published in 1848-1849. Exact authorship has been debated since then. Charles 1 was executed on January 30, 1849. One theory has John Gauden, the Bishop of Exeter, writing the book to inspire sympathy for the King and to rouse public opinion against his execution. The "Eikon" or "Image of the King" was a most influential book printed in England during the period of the English Civil Wars and helped turn the tide of opinion in favor of the monarchy, leading to the restoration of Charles II to the throne in 1660. Furthermore, some historians believe that had the book appeared even a week earlier than it did, it might have saved the King's life. See Allibone, Volume 1 and Wing E294-306. One book with similar binding has come to auction in the past 30 years according to ABPC. We find only two libraries worldwide listing the book on OCLC.. Early Edition. Full Contemporary Calf. General Light to moderate Wear/No Jacket. 6 3/4" x 4 1/4".

Charles I and John Gauden
London - R. Royden, 1649 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A charming andearlycopy of this highly sought after work, which purports to be Charles I's spiritual autobiography. First edition, with the original frontispiece engraved by William Marshall. Accompanied by Latin and English verses in explanation. Published on February 9, 1649, ten days after the King was beheaded by Parliament in the aftermath of the English Civil War. Written in a simple, moving, and straightforward style in the form of a diary, the book combines irenic prayers urging the forgiveness of Charles's executioners with a justification of royalism and the King's political and military program that led to the Civil War. It is by no means certain that Charles wrote the book. After the Restoration, John Gauden, bishop of Worcester, claimed to have written it. Scholars continue to disagree about the merits of this claim, though Gauden did have access to Charles' manuscripts. Condition: Rebacked in a calf binding, with original calf boards with brass clasps. Externally, rubbing to the boards, and loss to the clasps. Calf to the spine is smart. Internally, firmly bound, with lightly age toned pages, and the odd spot. Small closed tears to the frontispiece. Copperplate ink inscription to the endpapers. Overall: GOOD..

Du Ryer, André
London: No publisher/printer, 1649. 4to (18.2 cm, 7.13"). [8] ff., 407, [1] p. (lacking final 7 ff.). First edition. Du Ryer's was the => first vernacular translation of the entire Koran (L'Alcoran de Mahomet, 1647, the third Western translation), and the basis for many following editions in various languages, including this => first ever complete English version published just two years later. Despite never having attended university, André Du Ryer (ca. 1580–1660) became an accomplished orientalist and translator, credited with introducing Persian literature to Europe (Gulist?n, 1634). Appointed French vice-consul to Alexandria in 1623, he studied Arabic and Turkish in situ for years, collecting oriental manuscripts on trips with the French ambassador, for whom he was an interpreter and later counselor. In Istanbul, the sultan also made Du Ryer his ambassador extraordinary to France. Woodcut headpieces and initials decorate the text, which is entirely in English, printed in roman and italic with sidenotes. The book closes with "The life and death of Mahomet, the prophet of the Turks, and author of the Alcoran" (pp. 395–407), but does not include the final, discrete article called for by ESTC, "A needfull caveat of admonition for them who desire to know what use may be made of, or if there be danger in reading the Alcoran," by Alexander Ross. Wing (rev. ed.), K747; ESTC R200453; Thomason, E.553[3]. On Du Ryer's translation, see: Hamilton, André Du Ryer and oriental studies in seventeenth-century France (2004), ch. 4.
