LUCINI, ANTON FRANCESCO ?" DELLA BELLA STEFANO.
Roma, 1649. Incisione in rame all'acquaforte, b / n, cm 35,4 x 50,2 (il foglio). Anton Francesco Lucini (Firenze, 1610 ?"

Dulaure r … [Click Below for Full Description]

DELLON Charles.
Testo francese. Cm.14,3x8,3. Pg.(4), 219, (15). Legatura coeva in piena pelle consunta, con dorso a cinque nervature. Taglispruzzati. Ex libris nobiliare all'antiporta.

Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) Originally a student of philosophy came under the influence of Gemma Frisius, the founder of the Belgian school of Geography, and became interested in mathematics - both in the theory and the practical application. With these skills he soon became an expert in land surveying and cartography, as well as a skilled engraver. His first maps were published in 1537 (Palestine), and 1538 (a map of the world), although his main occupation at this time was globe-making. He later moved to Duisburg, in Germany, where he produced his outstanding wall maps of Europe and of Britain. In 1569 he published his masterpiece, the twenty-one-sheet map of the world, constructed on what is now known as Mercator's projection. It was during this period, while teaching cosmography at Duisburg, that Mercator realised the pressing need for a modern collection of maps to supersede the Ptolemaic atlases. This project was gradually expanded to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Descartes, R.
. Amsterdam, Louys Elzevier, 1649. 8vo. [ii], [xliii], 286 pp. Fine full red morocco with five raised bands; spine with gilt title, marbled end-papers, all edges gilt, elaborately gilt blind-tooled inner dentelles.l The last philosophical work of Rene Descartes [here: Des Cartes] published during his lifetime. The word "reflex", was first introduced in this work in the modern sense, i.e. "...in connection with the action of the nervous system." (Hunter & Macalpine) . "In the treatise Passions of the Soul ... completed in 1649 and dedicated to Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia, the author contributes to a long tradition of theorizing "the passions". Now called emotions, they have been "subject of debate among natural philosophers since the time of Plato. Notable precursors to Descartes who articulated their own theories of the passions include St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas and Thomas Hobbes" (Wikipedia). Descartes' treatise is divided into three parts: The first part, "Des passions en general: et par occasion de toute la nature de l'homme" analyzes the relationship between soul and body; in the second part "Du nombre & l'ordre des passions, & l'explication des six primitives", Descartes analyzes the passions from within, giving us a definition of each of them; in the third part "Des passions particulieres", Descartes examines the different passions. This is preceded by a discourse in letters, dated from 6 November 1648 to 14 August 1649, between Descartes, then living in Egmond (Holland), and Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia. "Les passions is Descartes' most important contribut … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johann Janssonius
Asia: Amsterdam. J. Janssonius. 1649. Copper engraved map of South East Asia by Janssonius. from "Le Nouveau Theatre Du Monde Ou Nouvel Atlas " Vol 3. Black & white; French text to verso. Decorative title cartouche; scale and imprint with strapwork surrounds and compass roses to sea above each. The map first appeared in 1630. "The Hondius-Jansson publication included a completele new map of Southeast Asia and the East Indian archipelago by Jan Jansson entitled 'India Orientalis Nova Descriptio'. The map was the most accurate, as well as one of the most elegant, seventeenth-century maps of the East Indian Islands, and included one of the first inferences to the discoveries made on the northwestern coast of Australia in 1606 by William Jansz in the ship Duyfken. On the south coast of New Guinea the name 'Dufkens Eylant' appears, thereby immortalizing the name of the ship by which Australia had been discovered in 1606; however, the map only reaches ten degrees south latitude and does not show any part of the Australian mainland. The False Cape (Valschen Caep) and the Torres Strait or embayment, if they were mapped at all, would be hidden behind the decorative scale bar. Schilder believes that Jansson's map was of the greatest importance until the copy of the original 'Duyfken' map and the 1622 manuscript map of the Pacific by Hessel Gerritz, Blaeu's predecessor in the post of Official Hydrographer to the VOC, were found. William Blaeu must have been privy to these discoveries from his official position in the Dutch East India Company, but he did not publish his classic regiona … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

BLAEU, Joan.
Joan Blaeu Amsterdam, 1649. Double-page, engraved, hand-coloured map, Latin text on verso. Plan of the town Tolen from Joan Blaeu's town book of the Netherlands, first published one year after the peace of Munster and the Spanish acknowledgement of the Dutch Republic. Blaeu planned his town book towards the end of the battle with Spain to consist of two volumes; one showing the towns of the Republic, the other showing towns belonging to Spain. In the second edition, due to a large scale re-conquest of land by the Republic, Blaeu had to transfer several towns to the volume showing towns of the Republic and as a consequence this volume became larger than the other; thus the composition of the atlas became linked to the struggle for independence of the Republic. The canons depicted on the city walls on this map are a reference to this struggle. Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici B1 64.
