Johann Janssonius
Asia: Amsterdam. J. Janssonius. 1649. Copper engraved map of the Spice Islands, the Moluccas by Janssonius. from " Nouvus Atlas, Das ist: Wetbeschreibung.. " Vol 3. black & white ; German text to verso. The map shows the "Spice" or North Maluku islands with details of the plantations and the forts of Tabillola, Mauritius, Nassau and Malayo established by the Dutch after they had expelled the Portuguese in the seventeenth century Large decorative title cartouche supported by dolphins; scale with strapwork surround; 2 compasses roses and numerous ships and monsters to sea; 2 natives stand in the lower right corner. The Indonesian archipelago of the Moluccas (or Maluku Islands), commonly referred to as the Spice Islands, lies on the equator north of Australia and west of New Guinea. Though there are hundreds of islands in the group (most are very small), only a handful figure prominently in the history of the European spice trade, including today's Ternate, Tidore, Moti, Makian, and Bacan--essentially the ones shown on the map. Until the 1700s, these rain-forested, luxuriant, volcanic islands were the only or best sources of such spices as cloves, nutmeg, and mace. Arab traders introduced cloves to Europeans around the fourth century but sought to keep their sources secret. Their monopoly was broken by the Portuguese after Vasco da Gama's voyage to India around the Cape of Good Hope in 1497. The Portuguese strengthened their stranglehold on the spice trade during the sixteenth century, when they found the central locus of the spices to be these islands. Giovanni MONTECALERIO (da Montecalerio) (1578 - 1654)
Rara. Taken from the "Chorographica Descriptio Provinciaru & Conventum....", first edition. Torino Turin 320 220

Claes Jansz VISSCHER (1587 - 1652) / Barent LANGENES (fl. 1597/8). Benjamin WRIGHT (1575 - 1613).
Copper engraving (Very Good, full margins, very lightly toned, mild printer’s creases running through upper left corner and in lower right blank margin), sheet size: 13.2 x 17.4 cm (5.2 x 6.9 inches), platemark: 9 x 12.2 cm (3.5 x 4.8 inches). Exceedingly rare – a miniature work that is one the most attractive early printed maps of Madagascar, exquisitely engraved by the master Benjamin Wright, included in the Visscher-Langenes Atlas. This fine little map depicts all of Madagascar (noted here by its archaic European name of ‘S. Laurtentij’, or the island of St. Lawrence) taken from an eastward-orientated perspective. Engraved with remarkable élan by the English master Benjamin Wright, the topographical and features of the island come alive: the mountains and villages areas portrayed pictographically, while the numerous offshore islands and reefs are vigorously represented; features are labelled in an attractive font. During the time of this map’s issue Madagascar was an important waypoint for mariners headed for India, Indonesia and the Far East. Later in the 17th Century, it would become the main base for pirates praying on the East Indies trade. The first edition of the map appeared in the 1598 edition of Barent Langenes’s miniature atlas Caert-Thresoor, and the same copperplate was used in at least a dozen other works over the next two generations. The present issue of the map, from Claes Jansz Visscher’s Tabularum geographicarum (1649) is remarkable from the other editions, at it is printed on much higher quality paper, giving it a uniquely sharp and resplendent appeara … [Click Below for Full Description]
