Remondini & Rizzi.
18th century & later. Full sized, unused sheets. Six of the papers are known or presumed to have been printed by the Remondini factory. Three are later printings by Rizzi from the original Remondini blocks and bear the Stampa Remondiniani PESP blindstamp. Most in very good condition. The stars of the group are a matched pair (each 16 x 13 inches): Remondini's view of Venice surround by a large bouquet on a blue diaper pattern background, along with its Rizzi recreation. There are 3 Remondini bookbinding papers (17 1/2 x 14 1/2). Two sheets of Remondini wall paper (21 1/2 x 17 1/2). These have some fraying and are in good condition. There are 2 more Rizzi PESP recreations of binding papers. Full, unused papers such as these are rare. The papers were printed on a hand press, using vegetable dyes (probably in paste, rather than ink) on wood blocks; sometimes with copper pins or strips mounted on them for tiny details. A different block was cut for each design and for each color. The papers were typically stored folded in half. When a paper has two identical images with a narrow space between, it was meant to be cut in half. Remondini, establishing his printshop in Bassano in 1649, was soon renowned for his wood block and copper prints and block-printed papers. He dominated the c18 market, employing a thousand persons, with 38 printing presses, a paper mill, die foundry, and a trade school of woodcarving. When the firm closed in 1861, about a thousand of the old blocks were rescued by a group of 4 enthusiasts: Pasoli, Esengrini, Suardi, and Ponti (hence the P E S P stamp). A Gentleman [Thomas Belke]
Printed for J. G. & G. B, 1649. 24mo. Full Leather. A closet drama written during the height of the English Civil War, and contemporary with the events in Naples. The real-to-life Masaniello was tutored by the cleric and academic Giulio Genoino, and would organize the beginning of the first Neapolitan revolt against the Spanish Hapsburg rule. Refusing the pension offered after his instatement as Captain-General and voicing his desire to soon quit the political sphere and return to life as a fisherman, Masaniello would famously and rapidly descend into madness before having his head liberated from his shoulders. The play takes the revolt and madness, and spins an altogether different plot revolving around familial poisonings, knifings, strangulation, and barefaced tyranny by ascendant revolutionaries. Indeed, the moral of the play could scarcely have been more heavy handed--until the epilogue, when Masaniello quite literally rises from the grave to deride the chorus, decry revolutionaries, and urge subjects to be loyal and shy away from rebellion and treason. Written in the same year as the execution of King Charles I and the abolishment of the Monarchy and House of Lords, such a didactic drama must undoubtedly be considered a product of the tumultuous period. Penned by a Thomas Belke, perhaps the same Thomas Belke who was a Rector in Kent, Fellow of Queens' College, and Prebendary of Canterbury. Full sheep, with primitive tooling in blind. Rebacked with Japanese tissue. Bookplate. Lacking pastedowns. Lacking folding frontispiece called for by ESTC. [8], 77, [3]. An uncommon … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHARLES I, King of England (1600-1649); [John GAUDEN (1605-1662)]
[London]: [printed by John Grismond for Richard Royston], 1648 [i.e. 1649]. 12mo (165 x 95 mm; 6½ x 3¾ inches). Engraved double-page portrait by William Marshall. Early 20th-century half calf, marbled boards, all edges gilt, by Zaehnsdorf. Light wear to extremities; a few occasional pale stains, lacks terminal blank, generally fresh. Item #402219 FIRST EDITION, third state, with correct pagination in quire G. Originally attributed to Charles I, the bibliographer Falconer Madan believes it was written by John Gauden, who probably included some authentic writings of the king. Though the title-page reads 1648, it was published on 9 February 1649, ten days after the king was beheaded in the aftermath of the English Civil War. The famous allegorical frontispiece by William Marshall depicts Charles I as a Christian martyr. The work was so successful in its portrayal of the king that, at the Restoration, a special commemoration of the king on 30 January was added to the Book of Common Prayer. Charles I is the only saint formally canonized by the Church of England. ESTC R10559; Madan 1c; Wing E270. [Attributes: First Edition]

Warly [or Worly?], Rev. - Attributed to
: , 1649. 2 volumes, period full leather. ~ 700 pages total, mss entries in secretary hand, primarily English. 7" x 2-1/2"; 7-1/2" x  3". Leather well worn, with spine mostly lacking on one volume, which is approaching disbound. A Fair to Good set. Provenance: Jeanette Lenygon a prominent NY interior designer, and antique collector with prominent society clients (Newport mansions, the White House etc). She had a posh practice in London serving the Royal family and other luminaries. Lenygon gave this set to an individual who graduated from Yale in 1964. He was then head of the West Side Association of New York City. The journals were acquired from one of his relatives, and subequently sold to Tavistock Books. Their original research of some years ago showed a Reverend Worly or Warly in England in the mid 17th Century, to whom is attributed authorship. There is the possibility that the author may have been an early American colonist. There was a Whorly or  Worley (spelling is not always exact) family, who first set foot in Jamestown Colony In North America. Spellings of that same family name Include a General Edward Whalley (Worle) who was one of the signers of the death warrant for beheading King Charles. He was first cousin of Oliver Cromwell. I believe the families original research regarding the journals, that they belonged to a Rev Worly of England. Some entries directly reference the upheaval & chaos of  the English Civil War. In one section the author writes about England and comments on" its great sin" ? He also writes about the nature of man, Satan, God … [Click Below for Full Description]

La Haye [Londres], S.n. [William Dugard], 1649. 3 parties en 1 volume in-16. 9ff. 1 planche dépliante. 8ff. 269pp. + 6ff. (1f.blanc). 1f. (déplacé à la fin de la partie). 79pp. (1f.blanc). + 3ff. 56pp. (i.e. 50). [Click Below for Full Description]

A Gentleman
London: Printed for J. G. & G. B, 1649. Condition: Very Good binding. 24mo. [ … [Click Below for Full Description]

WALKER, Clement
(London): Theodorus Varax. Printed By Hen. Hils, 1649. (iv); 160 pages inc. imprimatur leaf, and Lilburne in the 'dock' plate. Some light page discolouration. Bookplate of J. Cresswell by Thomas Bewick. Early 19th century embossed calf by Dixon of Bishop Wearmouth with his ticket, with later reback. In the Civil War John Lilburne was enlisted as a captain in the Parliamentary army. He fought bravely at Edge Hill, and later at Marston Moor. At the battle of Brentford he was taken prisoner after trying to escape by swimming the Thames. As the first prominent Parliamentarian to be captured in the Civil War, the Royalists intended trying him for high treason. However he was released after being exchanged for a Royalist officer. In 1645 he was imprisoned after denouncing Members of Parliament, one year later he was held in the Tower of London for insulting his former commander the Earl of Manchester. It was the campaign to free him from prison which gave rise to the political party called the Levellers. During the Putney Debates he played a highly influential role, as did the Levellers. On 24th October 1649 Lilburne was put on trial for high treason after the Parliament falsely declaring that the Levellers were conspiring with the Royalists to overthrow the new Commonwealth. A jury of 12 men found him not guilty much to the acclaim of his many supporters. He developed the advanced political theory based on "freeborn rights", defining them as rights every human is born with, as opposed to rights bestowed by government or law.. First Edit. Full-Leather. Very Good.. 4to. Book.

Very Good.. 4to. Book.

Seneca
Lugd: Elzevir, 1649. See pictures. Some shelf wear on bottom edges. All spines have some discoloring and occasional marks. Boards mostly clean. Volume 1 has a bumped top rear corner. Volume four has a thumb size indent on rear board, a little chipping at top of spine, a small chip in binding at fore-edge, and loss of leather at the upper corners. All four books share three bookplates and one stamp (see provenance notes). All have pencil notes on the endpapers, volume one more. Volume one has toning to introductory pages, and the last two pages, the rest of the text block being clean and free of any annotations. Pages towards the end of volume two have the slightest toning. Volume three is more toned throughout. Volume four also is very lightly toned. I notice a very occasional small spot as well. Beautiful, tall, soft Elzevir printings of Seneca's works, likely bound by the venerable Roger Payne. Note on Vol. 1 endpage, "Payne Binding", insinuating the bindings were executed by Payne, considered one of the finest binders of the 18th century. Also, the 1885 Sotheby catalogue lists, "SENECAE OPERA OMNIA cum Notis J. F. Gronovii, 4 vol. very fine and large copy (5 1/4 inches) in red morocco, gilt edges, by Roger Payne, rare Lugd. Bat. Elzevir, 1649." Our books are 5.25" tall, making it highly likely these are the same books. Provenance There exists a clear record of 4 volumes, attributed to Roger Payne, bound in red Morocco, of the 1649 Elzevir Seneca being sold since 1841 (with all of the catalogs listed below scanned and free-to-view on Google Books).
