[Click Below for Full Description]

Catholic Church. Liturgy & ritual.
Por el Bachiller Iuan Blanco Alcaçar, 1649. Puebla was the second city in New Spain to obtain a printing press, issuing its first book in 1642, not 1640 as Medina claimed. The man responsible for the press's arrival was the same eminent figure mentioned on the title-page of this extremely rare volume: Don Juan de Palafox y Mendoza. Bishop, later viceroy, Palafox, was one of the most interesting and controversial figures to reside in Mexico during the 17th century. Born in Fitero, Navarre, Spain, in 1600, the illegitimate but recognized son of Jaime Palafox, the Marqués of Ariza, he rose in the service of the Church in Spain through his native talent and his father's connections. In 1640, the king appointed him the bishop of Puebla, Mexico, with special powers to serve concurrently as a visitador, or special investigator, specifically charging him with reforming the various religious orders (Jesuits, Franciscans, Dominicans, etc.) who seemed to defy and stymie the king's will at every turn, and who had grown to be more secular in behavior than was seemly, legal, customary, or acceptable. The bishop's efforts as visitador met with dogged resistance, even from the viceroy, whom Palafox suspected of being a sympathizer with the Portuguese separatists (and whom he was to succeed). => The various orders initiated protracted legal opposition to everything Palafox attempted. Notwithstanding the imposing odds against him, Palafox did have his share of unqualified accomplishments during his years in Mexico: He composed and saw into print the codification of the constitution of … [Click Below for Full Description]

WALKER, Clement
Theodorus Varax. Printed By Hen. Hils, (London) 1649 - (iv); 160 pages inc. imprimatur leaf, and Lilburne in the 'dock' plate. Some light page discolouration. Bookplate of J. Cresswell by Thomas Bewick. Early 19th century embossed calf by Dixon of Bishop Wearmouth with his ticket, with later reback. In the Civil War John Lilburne was enlisted as a captain in the Parliamentary army. He fought bravely at Edge Hill, and later at Marston Moor. At the battle of Brentford he was taken prisoner after trying to escape by swimming the Thames. As the first prominent Parliamentarian to be captured in the Civil War, the Royalists intended trying him for high treason. However he was released after being exchanged for a Royalist officer. In 1645 he was imprisoned after denouncing Members of Parliament, one year later he was held in the Tower of London for insulting his former commander the Earl of Manchester. It was the campaign to free him from prison which gave rise to the political party called the Levellers. During the Putney Debates he played a highly influential role, as did the Levellers. On 24th October 1649 Lilburne was put on trial for high treason after the Parliament falsely declaring that the Levellers were conspiring with the Royalists to overthrow the new Commonwealth. A jury of 12 men found him not guilty much to the acclaim of his many supporters. He developed the advanced political theory based on "freeborn rights", defining them as rights every human is born with, as opposed to rights bestowed by government or law. This was Descartes' last work published in his lifetime, drawing heavily on the then-unpublished Traité de l'homme. It contains an extensive discussion of mind-body duality and the first description of the reflex function (and the first use of the word reflex to describe it). For Descartes, that the soul was seated in the pineal gland, which mediated interaction between soul and body. "Descartes believed the soul to be a definite entity, giving rise to thoughts, feelings, and acts of volition. He was one of the first to regard the brain as an organ integrating the functions of mind and body" (Garrison-Morton). The publishing rights of this work were shared between Louis Elzevier and Henry Le Gras and only a small fraction of this issue … [Click Below for Full Description]
