Vasari, Giorgio
Bologna, Per gli Eredi di Evangelista Dozza, 1648, Seconda edizione Dozza. Bell’esemplare. [Click Below for Full Description]

CHARLES I
London, 1648. Hardcover. Very Good+. Engraved Frontispiece. [8], 270 pp. 12mo., bound in early nineteenth-century calf. [London: Royston], 1648 (1649). First issue of the third edition, and the last published by Royston towards the middle of March, less than two months after the King's execution. First published in 1649, at the time of Charles I's execution, the Eikon Basilike soon becsame one of the most widely read works of royal propaganda from the English Civil War with thirty five editions printed by year end. In the same year Milton, as Latin Secretary to Cromwell, published Eikonoklastes, refuting the Eikon Basilike paragraph by paragraph and criticizing public support of the work. Regarding doubts of Charles' authorship, which arose very soon after publication, Francis Madan has suggested that the work was probably composed by the King in stages, beginning in 1642, with the assistance of Dr. Gauden an Exeter Clergyman. Spine and hinges professionally restored, marginal stain to bottom of last three leafs, still a nice crisp copy.

VASARI GIORGIO.
Bologna, Per gli Eredi di Evangelista Dozza. Con licenza de? Superiori, 1648-1663. Tre volumi in-4ø; 8 cc., 76 pp., 433 pp. - 1 c., 544 pp. - 22 cc., 408 pp., 66 cc.; complessivamente 152 ritratti xilografici. "The Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors and Architects' is the first modern history of art. It has made Vasari's name immortal? Vasari's excellent sense of narrative, however, and lively style combined with his wide personal acquaintance makes his "Lives" a vital contribution to our understanding of the character and psychology of the great artists of the Renaissance, a term (rinascita) which he was the first to use" (PMM). Schlosser Magnino, pp. 291 ss. PMM 88. Comolli I, p. 15 e sgg. Michel VIII, p. 96. Graesse VI, 264.
