Sheppard, William
1648. London, 1651. 2nd ed. The First English Treatise on Conveyancing Sheppard, William [fl. 1660]. The Touch-Stone of Common Assurances. Or, A Plain and Familiar Treatise Opening the Learning of the Common Assurances or Conveyances of the Kingdom. London: Printed for W. Lee, D. Pakeman, And Gabriel Bedell, 1651. [xii], 348, 353-529, [7] pp. Final leaf blank. Text complete. Quarto (8" x 6-1/2"). Contemporary calf, rebacked in period style, blind rules to boards, raised bands to spine. A few scratches to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, corners bumped and somewhat worn, front pastedown loose, rear pastedown removed. Very light browning to text, annotations in contemporary hand to a few leaves, light foxing in a few places, offsetting and minor wear to edges of preliminaries and final few leaves, light soiling to title page. $450. * Second edition. The Touchstone is the earliest work devoted to the theory of conveyancing. Each chapter opens with a definition of a type of conveyance followed by an outline of the rules, principles and legal maxims that govern it. Sheppard's comments are supported by textual authorities and case examples, and he includes variations, specific conditions and limitations. Sheppard's claim of authorship has been a point of controversy since the eighteenth century. Many scholars believe that the Touchstone was written as a manuscript for personal use by Sir John Dodderidge, a judge during the reign of Charles I. According to this theory, Sheppard purchased the manuscript at auction, then edited it for publication. Whether the author was Shep … [Click Below for Full Description]

Walker, Clement]
1648 (first part and appendix) and 1649 (second part); small 4to, pp [vi], 174, 18, [viii], 254, [i, being an errata leaf]; full calf, worn and both boards detached; internally sound and clean although generally somewhat browned; faint library stamp at foot of title page of first part; errata leaf torn across without loss of text and now carefully repaired; occasional decorative initials and headings. Walker, an English lawyer, was a member and an outspoken critic of the Long Parliament (1640-1648 and then 1658-1660) until his death in the Tower of London 1651. Initially hostile ot the Puritans he latterly sided with William Prynne, another Somerset lawyer and a Puritan hostile to Archbishop William Laud. Walker was strongly hostile to what he saw as the corruption of parliament and argued strongly for the rights of MPs against the House of Lords and against arbitrary government. Although not in the best condition as regards its binding this is a good copy of an important historical and political work complete with the two parts and the appendix to the first part. Walker later published in 1651 a third part to his "History of Independency" titled "The High Court of Justice, or Cromwell's New Slaughter House in England". [Attributes: Hard Cover]

NARABAYASHI, Chinzan
1648. A richly illustrated manuscript, important and influential in the history of medicine and surgery in Japan, revealing the introduction of European medical knowledge in Japan, through Ambroise Paré's Chirurgie, Scultetus's Armamentarium Chirurgicum, and Spigelius's Opera. This is a luxury copy (only one similar set survives, at Nagasaki), in oblong folio format, and written and finely illustrated on fine thick mulberry paper. Our manuscript contains 134 exquisitely drawn and richly hand-colored illustrations.Chinzan (or Eikyu) Narabayashi (1648-1711), belonged to a family of professional interpreters in Nagasaki and became proficient in the Dutch language. He had contact with several Dutch physicians on the island of Dejima and their influence inspired the young Japanese to forsake his profession to study medicine. By 1691, the shogunate offered him a position of "official physician."Narabayashi learned Western medicine from the Dutch doctors on Dejima and from them he acquired an edition of Paré's Chirurgie in 1688. That very copy remained in the family until 1891 when it was presented to Tokyo University Library. It was destroyed during the 1923 earthquake and fire."Geka Soden" is based on the masterworks of Paré, Scultetus, and Spigelius and also took into consideration oral instructions given by Dutch physicians to Narabayashi, along with his own theories derived from his own surgical experiences. The text also reflects Chinese influences including the explanation of in-yo (the positive and negative) and applying prescriptions used in Ch … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vasari, Giorgio
Graesse VI, 264.

"Sir Charles Dallison was an officer in the Royalist army during the English Civil War. He was also a serjeant-at-law and in 1648 he published an often cited work justifying his reasons for supporting the Royalist cause." 'The most expansive and cogently argued of all Royalist self-vindications'. In it he explains that he initially took up arms because of the Militia Ordinance which he considered an illegal act because the king did not give his royal assent to it. In the opinion of Dallison no new law can be passed without the assent of the king, so those who marched under the authority of the Militia Ordinance were committing high treason, and it was the duty of all loyal subjects to defend the king against those who break the law and commit high treason." From the library of a descendent of the famous Parliamentary military commander during the English Civil War.

1648 - Antique print, titled: 'Ducatus Gelriae pars quarta quae est Arnhemiensis, sive Velavia' - Gelderland, Veluwe Description: From: 'Atlas Novus', 1646-49 latin ed. Ref: Koeman 1:403/05.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Janssonius' after 'Johannes Janssonius (publisher)'. Publisher: Johannes Janssonius (Jansson),( 1588- 1664) Amsterdam was born in Arnhem, the son of Jan Janszoon the Elder,a publisher and bookseller. In 1612 he married Elisabeth de Hondt, the daughter of Jodocus Hondius. He produced his first maps in 1616 of France and Italy. In 1623 Janssonius owned a bookstore in Frankfurt am Main, later also in Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Königsberg, Geneva and Lyon. In the 1630s he formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius. Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus, it had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. 1646 a fourth volume came out with ""English County Maps"", a year after a similar issue by Willem Blaeu. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu and/or covered different regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name ""Atlas Major"", there were 11 volumes, containing the work of about a hundred credited authors and engravers. It included a description of ""most of the cities of the world"" (Townatlas), of the waterworld (Atlas Maritimus in 33 maps), and of the Ancient World … [Click Below for Full Description]

With a frontispiece engraved by Giovanni Mattia Striglioni after Domenico Piola, showing the inside of a library with, on top, the coat-of-arms of Giovanni Niccolò Cavanna, dedicatee of the work and friend of the author. RARE FIRST EDITION, financed by the dedicatee Giovanni Niccolò Cavanna and edited by Lorenzo Legati, of the catalogue of the first public library of Liguria, the Aprosiana Library, named after its founder, the Augustinian Friar Angelico Aprosio, and established in 1648 at the Augustinian monastery of Ventimiglia. The library contained over ten thousand volumes (cf. L. Gavazzi, Angelico Aprosio, la Biblioteca Aprosiana e il complesso di Sant'Agostino a Ventimiglia, Ventimiglia, 2010). The work consists of a list of the collection supporters - the "Fautori" -, arranged in alphabetical order by first name. PALLAVICINO, Ferrante (1615-44). -
Cambrai (= Venezia), s.n.t., 1648. In - 12. Legatura coeva in pelle, dorso e angoli restaurati. Gay III, 1012. Pia II, Les livres de l'Enfer, 1171. Very rare second edition of a scandalous anti - Jesuit work in the form of a dialogue between an aged prostitute and her naive apprentice. Pallavicino was the author of a number of lampoons and satires, and was beheaded at 28 years of age for anti - papal writings. Contemp. calf, spine and corners repaired; tiny hole in A8 affecting two letters, some staining and light toning of the paper. Laura Coci's census lists only three copies of this edition.
