DONNE, John
London: Printed for Humphrey Moseley, 1648.. First edition, second issue, 8vo, (xvi), 218 pp. Some mostly mild marginal browning, contemporary manuscript title to fore edge. Recent blind ruled goatskin, black spine label, a very good copy. "The earliest of Donne's controversial writings..." (Keynes) and a work that existed only in a few manuscript copies due to its subject matter until after Donne's death. Wing D1859. Keynes 48. The book was licensed to be published in 1644 but evidently didn't appear until 1647, at which time the title page was printed without a full imprint, necessitating this second issue with a cancel title.

Quarles, Francis; Alexander Pennecuik; Alexander Robertson, "Ned Scrawl," Andrew Clubson, Thomas Woolrich
London: Richard Royston, 1648. Hardcover. Good. The Quarles is a Third Edition from 1648; this and the commonplace book are bound in mid 19th century half red calf and green paper-covered boards, approximately 7.5 x 6 inches. Paginated (6) 62 (2) pp. this appears to be complete, but OCLC cites a portrait plate, and there is none present here. The title page has been trimmed and there are small crenolated circular patches at the gutter of the title page and the next page (see pics). Quarles is followed by one printed leaf, which is the dedicatory poem to Alexander Pennecuik by John Forbes that appears in 'The Description of Tweeddale' published 1715. The 34 pp of handwritten verse that succeeds this appear to be mid 18th century and almost undoubtedly by a Scotsman, first, 'Godly Sarah or the Sighing Sister' (authored by 'Ned Scrawl' and published in Edinburgh in 1737); 'To Delia, being detain'd from her by Sickness' (we find no record of publication), Alexander Robertson of Struan's 'Inscription of Mount Alexander' and also 'Struan's Apology to Mrs. Alicia McKenzie' (Alexander Robertson was the 13th Chief of Struan, 1689-1749); 'The Character of Sir Ewen Cameron...' (Cameron died in 1719), 'On the Murther of King Charles the first by the then Schoolmaster of Leith, an Ode' (here, too, no record of publication we could ascertain), 'An English-mans Grace over his Pock-pudding' (This was penned by Alexander Pennecuik and was first published in 1750), and finally 'Thanksgiving after Moat' (no record we could find of publication). There is also a smaller leaf with calculations … [Click Below for Full Description]

BRAHE, Tycho
Johannes Godofred Schönwetter, Frankfurt, 1648. Two parts in one vol., 4to, pp. [vi], [3-]470, [7]; 217, [1], [1 leaf, blank], with large woodcut printer’s device on both titles, and numerous illustrations and diagrams in text; the two leaves of dedication to the Bishop of Munich erroneously bound in at the end of the volume; some mild browning and foxing; the final twenty leaves with a few wormholes filled in, affecting a few letters, otherwise an unusually fine copy, bound in contemporary southern French red morocco, gilt arms to covers. A WONDERFUL COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF TYCHO’S ‘WORKS’, COMPRISING HIS TWO MOST SIGNIFICANT PUBLICATIONS, THE PROGYMNASMATA (1602) AND DE MUNDI AETHEREI (1603), WHICH TOGETHER FORM ‘THE FOUNDATION ON WHICH KEPLER, AND LATER NEWTON, BUILT THEIR ASTRONOMICAL SYSTEMS’ (Sparrow). PRINTED AT FRANKFURT AT THE VERY END OF THE THIRTY YEARS’ WAR AND ON PAPER STOCK GENERALLY TENDING TO SEVERE BROWNING, THIS WORK IS NEVER FOUND IN SUCH FINE CONDITION AND IN A HIGHLY REMARKABLE BINDING AS HERE. ‘Tycho’s influence and reputation stems from achievements that fall into three quite distinct categories. The one that was most important during Tycho’s life and for the fifty years following it was cosmological in character. It was initiated in 1572 by the appearance of what has come to be called Tycho’s nova (now classified as a supernova) and raised to the dimension of a crusade by the appearance of the even more spectacular comet of 1577. During the ensuing decade Tycho composed lengthy monographs on each phenomenon. These would form the great bulk of hi … [Click Below for Full Description]

ASSARINO (Luca).
In Bologna, per Giacomo Monti, 1648. 2 parties en 1 volume, petit in-4. 3ff. 204pp. + 4ff. 140pp. 1f. Palau, 18586.

HARVEY, William
Arnold Leers, Rotterdam, 1648. First edition of the Exercitationes, one of two issues published simultaneously (see below), of this rare and important work, a defence of his theory of the circulation of the blood against the Parisian physician Jean Riolan the younger. It is here bound after the first Rotterdam edition of De motu cordis itself, an important edition in its own right, as it contains a corrected text, with the preface by Zacharias Sylvius (1608-1664); it also contains the first edition of the substantial treatise by James de Back (1593-1657), Dissertatio de corde . Annexa Appendix pro circulatione Harveiana. Keynes called the Exercitationes "one of [Harvey's] major contributions to medical science" (Life, p. 327). They were appended to later editions of De motu, as here; as Keynes says in his Bibliography of William Harvey, "The two treatises have for too long been considered merely an appendix to De motu - they are far more important than this." The only copy of the Exercitationes auctioned in the last forty years was the Haskell F. Norman copy, also bound with the Rotterdam edition of De motu (Christie's, June 1998, $9200, re-sold at Sotheby's PMM sale, October 1999, £6900). ?Norman 1007 & 1010. De motu cordis, first published in 1628, "is probably the most important book in the history of medicine. What Vesalius was to anatomy, Harvey was to physiology; the whole scientific outlook on the human body was transformed, and behind almost every important medical advance in modern times lies the work of Harvey" (Heirs of Hippocrates). The initial reaction to De mo … [Click Below for Full Description]

BETTINI, Mario. [BETTINUS, Marius].
Bologna: G.B. Ferroni, 1648. First edition. An outstanding copy of this rare compendious scholastic mathematical work by the Jesuit mathematician Mario Bettini (1582-1657), encompassing all the major fields of mathematics, but paying special attention to geometry. Bettini's Aerarium covers a wealth of information not just in mathematics but also astronomical geometry, all of which had, as with Bettini's previous Apiaria of 1645, gone through the Collegio Romano's rigorous censorship under the eye of Christoph Grienberger (d.1636), who as Clavius' successor was responsible for enforcing adherence to Aristotle in matters of natural philosophy. European scientific thought during the period 1620-1660 was dominated by the revolutionary investigations of Galileo and others into the nature of the solar system. The Jesuits, as the chief proponents of traditional Aristotelian teachings, were hailed by many as the intellectual champions of the Catholic Church, the philosophical mathematical and Scriptural arguments of Jesuit writers against the Copernican theory of a sun-centered solar system the main driving forces of seventeenth century inquiry. At the beginning of the seventeenth century to understand meant to grasp regularities, and this knowledge was based largely on the accepted authority of ancient texts. However as the worldview expanded the certainty of such views began to diminish. For the philosophically well-educated mathematics appeared as one of the few refuges of eternal truths untainted by the possibility of such dissent. Jesuit colleges, such as that at Parma where B … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHURMAN, Anna Maria Van.
Ex officina Elsiviriorum, Lvgd, Batavor, 1648. TP + [i]-[iv] = Lectoris + [vi] = frontispiece portrait of the author + 1-374 + 1 blank leaf. First Edition. With the engraved self-portrait frontispiece that the author executed in 1640 when she was 33 years old. Below this, van Schurman has written: Cernitis hic picta nostros in imagine vultus: / Si negat ars formam, gratia vestra dabit (See my features portrayed in this image, If art denies beauty, then your favor will grant it). Despite an aversion to her growing notoriety, van Schurman was finally persuaded by Leyden's Professor of Theology, Dr. André Rivet (her friend and spiritual adviser whom she referred to as "her father in Christ") to publish a collection of her works and, more particularly, her correspondence. Elzevier published the work and, for the first time, allowed her some significant control over the printed text. This she did, reprinting her now famousDissertatio, de Ingenii Muliebris ad Doctrinam and including copies of her letters - fourteen written in French and fifty-nine in Latin, Greek and Hebrew, all addressed to a wide variety of famous men and women. The book also included twenty-two of her Latin poems and the entire text was edited by Friedrich Spanheim, the rector of the University of Leden, who also wrote a laudatory Preface. In her outstanding book on Anna Marie van Schurman, Anne R. Larsen notes that "more than any of her previous publications, the Opuscula affirmed her authoritative standing in the Republic of Letters" (p. 175). This was so true that the book saw a second edition in 1650 and a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Woodcut printer's device on titles, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces. Full page engraved portraits of the author and his son on *4. Printed in double columns. Contemporary full red vellum, with the original tabs marking the various parts; interior excellent. From the library of the Fuerstlich Auerspergsche Fideicommisbibliothek zu Laybach and Garth Huston Jr., with their respective bookplates. First edition of the Ortus medicinae, together with the complementary edition of the Opuscula medica inaudita normally found bound with it. The Ortus medicinae is the masterwork of one of the most original geniuses in the history of science. Van Helmont is celebrated as one of the first to conduct quantitative biological experiments; one of the founders of biochemistry; one of the first to recognize that there are several air-like substances and the originator of the word "gas" (from the Flemish pronunciation of the Greek word "chaos") to describe them; and the author of the modern ontological conception of disease. Van Helmont was, like Paracelsus, an alchemist and a mystic, but above all he believed in experiment and empiricism as the path to true knowledge. "In medicine, he introduced the examination of the specific gravity of urine for diagnostic purposes. He investigated the fluids in the human body and advanced the study of digestion in the stomach, coming close to identifying gastric acid with hydrochloric acid some two hundred years … [Click Below for Full Description]

CRAMAIL, Adrien de Montluc, comte de;
Bel exe … [Click Below for Full Description]

NARABAYASHI, Chinzan
A richly illustrated manuscript, important and influential in the history of medicine and surgery in Japan, revealing the introduction of European medical knowledge in Japan, through Ambroise Paré's Chirurgie, Scultetus's Armamentarium Chirurgicum, and Spigelius's Opera. This is a luxury copy (only one similar set survives, at Nagasaki), in oblong folio format, and written and finely illustrated on fine thick mulberry paper. Our manuscript contains 134 exquisitely drawn and richly hand-colored illustrations. Chinzan (or Eikyu) Narabayashi (1648-1711), belonged to a family of professional interpreters in Nagasaki and became proficient in the Dutch language. He had contact with several Dutch physicians on the island of Dejima and their influence inspired the young Japanese to forsake his profession to study medicine. By 1691, the shogunate offered him a position of "official physician." Narabayashi learned Western medicine from the Dutch doctors on Dejima and from them he acquired an edition of Paré's Chirurgie in 1688. That very copy remained in the family until 1891 when it was presented to Tokyo University Library. It was destroyed during the 1923 earthquake and fire. "Geka Soden" is based on the masterworks of Paré, Scultetus, and Spigelius and also took into consideration oral instructions given by Dutch physicians to Narabayashi, along with his own theories derived from his own surgical experiences. The text also reflects Chinese influences including the explanation of in-yo (the positive and negative) and applying prescriptions used in Chinese medicine. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Authorship of the Eikon Basilike was originally attributed to Charles I, but according to Madan (pp. 125-33) it was written by John Gauden who probably included some authentic writings of the king.; The text was suppressed by Parliament, so it was illegal for printers to print it and for booksellers to sell it. Most editions therefore give very little information about their production on the title page, where one would usually expect to see the place of printing, the printer's (and occasionally publisher's) name and address. Given the secrecy with which copies of the text had to be produced, establishing the order in which the various editions appeared and by whom they were printed is not an easy task. Consequently the identification of printers with particular anonymous editions has often been achieved by comparing their … [Click Below for Full Description]

COEHOORN, Menno van.
Jähns, p. 1383; Jordan 745 (3 copies); cf. Sloos, Warfare 8076. First German edition (second issue) of one of the greatest classics of the art of fortification, by the Inspector General of Dutch fortifications and Master General of the artillery, Menno van Coehoorn. While the Dutch had established themselves as the greatest masters of fortification during the Eighty Years' War for Dutch independence from Spain, the art did not stand still after peace came temporarily in 1648. Although a few Dutch engineers spoke out for reform, the Frenchman Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707) was to dominate the field with his fortifications, defensive and especially offensive strategies, and publications on the subjects from the 1670s. Van Coehoorn (1641-1704), Vauban's only major rival, took a very different approach, more practical than theoretical, with his great fortification manual in 1685. He deployed troops more actively in the defence of fortifications and tailored his designs and strategies to the particular features of the site. This made them especially important for fortifications and siege warfare in the marshy flat lands of the Low Countries, circumstances less familiar to Vauban. With library stamp. With a blank leaf pasted over the instructions to the bookbinder on )(4v. The plates are quite lightly inked, so that they show a great deal of detail. Lacking 1 folding plate, with a small tear and some wrinkles in 1 folding plate (fig. I) and an occasional minor spot, but otherwise in very good condition.
