Bacon, Francis
Leiden : Franciscum Hackium, 1648, 12, (34), 612 (pp.454-455 misnumbered 654-5), 47, (1) 87 pp., Pergamenteinband d.Zt. mit hs. Rückentitel feines Exemplar. Scarce Latin edition of Bacon's celebrated work, published the same year as an Elzevir printing in Amsterdam. First published posthumously in the year of Bacon's death (1626), Sylva Sylvarum is a an aptly-described "miscellany of topics?", dealing with the prolongation of life, the natural world, and the wisdom of the ancients, arranged in 1000 numbered paragraphs. William Rawley, Bacon's secretary, chose to addend the unfinished manuscript of New Atlantis to the former work, if only for convenience's sake. Bacon's utopian population famously practice eugenic breeding and are committed fundamentally to the pursuit of scientific learning. Having enjoyed five English editions by 1639, the present work attests to Bacon's popularity beyond British shores Elzevir in Amsterdam and Hackium in Leiden brought out simultaneous Latin translations in 1648. Hackium's re-engraved title page, interestingly, follows the original of 1626 rather closely, including a globe with outlines of the continents.. Die Naturbeschreibung in zehn Centurien mit Naturbeobachtungen verschiedenster Art. Der letzte Teil "Novus Atlas, Opus imperfectum, cum praefatione W. Please view item description for details. 1648 Alba Iulia New Testament Romanian Bible Religion Orthodox Limba română Alba Iulia Noul Testament sau Înpăcarea, sau Leagea Noao a lui Iisus Hristos Domnului nostru - In Romanian language - *** One of the most important work for Romanian culture is of course first translation of New Testament to Romanian language. In the 17th century there was a power struggle between Catholic and Calvinist Hungarian noblemen, so when George I Rákóczi became a Prince of Transylvania, as a way to consolidate his power, he insisted that the Orthodox Romanian people receive protestant Calvinistic confession. This had to be achieved through peaceful ways, investing in publishing religious books that would nuance the differences between the two confessions. So, sometime in the 1640s, Prince George I Rákóczi tasked Simeon Stefan, Metropolitan of Transylvania, to translate the New Testament to Romanian language. Simeon Stefan began his search for educated priests and wise men that knew how to translate the New Testament and brought them to Alba Iulia, cultural center and the capital of Transylvania. As sources, the translators used Greek, Slavic and Latin texts. Finally, The New Testament of Alba Iulia was published in 1648, the same year that Prince George I Rákóczi died. The Romanians of Transylvania resisted conversion. As a matter of fact, The New Testament in their own language played a significant role in their national awakening. *** Cetatea Belgradului [Alba Iulia], Tipăritu-s-au întru a mării sale Tipografie, 1648. *** Size: 31 x 20 cm … [Click Below for Full Description]

Quarles, Francis; Alexander Pennecuik; Alexander Robertson, "Ned Scrawl," Andrew Clubson, Thomas Woolrich
London: Richard Royston, 1648. Hardcover. Good. The Quarles is a Third Edition from 1648; this and the commonplace book are bound in mid 19th century half red calf and green paper-covered boards, approximately 7.5 x 6 inches. Paginated (6) 62 (2) pp. this appears to be complete, but OCLC cites a portrait plate, and there is none present here. The title page has been trimmed and there are small crenolated circular patches at the gutter of the title page and the next page (see pics). Quarles is followed by one printed leaf, which is the dedicatory poem to Alexander Pennecuik by John Forbes that appears in 'The Description of Tweeddale' published 1715. The 34 pp of handwritten verse that succeeds this appear to be mid 18th century and almost undoubtedly by a Scotsman, first, 'Godly Sarah or the Sighing Sister' (authored by 'Ned Scrawl' and published in Edinburgh in 1737); 'To Delia, being detain'd from her by Sickness' (we find no record of publication), Alexander Robertson of Struan's 'Inscription of Mount Alexander' and also 'Struan's Apology to Mrs. Alicia McKenzie' (Alexander Robertson was the 13th Chief of Struan, 1689-1749); 'The Character of Sir Ewen Cameron...' (Cameron died in 1719), 'On the Murther of King Charles the first by the then Schoolmaster of Leith, an Ode' (here, too, no record of publication we could ascertain), 'An English-mans Grace over his Pock-pudding' (This was penned by Alexander Pennecuik and was first published in 1750), and finally 'Thanksgiving after Moat' (no record we could find of publication). [Wilkins, John]
London: Printed by M.F. for Sa: Gellibrand at the Brasen Serpent in Pauls Churchyard, 1648. First edition of this remarkable introduction to modern mechanical technology by John Wilkins, a founder of the Royal Society, and one of the most influential science educators in seventeenth-century England. Wilkins's protégé, the scientist Robert Hooke, pays homage to his mentor in Micrographia: "There is scarce one invention which this nation has produced in our age, but it has some way or other been set forward by his assistance. . . . He is indeed a man born for the good of mankind." Wilkins hoped to inspire awe at the range of scientific possibility; indeed, his title phrase, "mathematical magic," refers not to occult sciences, but to the wonder of mechanical inventions. He begins with the basic principles of mechanics, including the functions of pulleys, wedges, screws, and wheels, and then launches into speculative applications of these operations. Many ideas are presented for the first time in English rather than Latin, pitched at a general readership. In the second part of the work, Wilkins proposes an incredible array of inventions that would appear in both real-life laboratories and science fiction novels over the next four hundred years, including submarines, moving statues, and perpetual motion machines. He devotes three chapters to flying machines, including the challenge of individual flight: "It being easie from the same grounds to frame an instrument, wherein any one may fit, and give such a motion unto it, as shall convey him aloft through the air." … [Click Below for Full Description]

L'HERMITE, Jacques.
Amsterdam, Joost Hartgertsz, 1648.4to. Old half vellum over marbled boards. With large woodcut with 2 ships on title-page and folding engraved plate depicting 6 views of the fleet in various bays and harbours. (2),76 pp.The first official account of the circumnavigation was published in 1626. - Jacques Le Hermite (1582-1624) commanded a punitive fleet of eleven ships and 1637 men to the coasts of South America with the objective of clearing the westward route to the Pacific of Spanish and Portuguese shipping. The fleet was outfitted under the auspices of the Dutch gouvernment, the two major companies, the Dutch East India Company and the Dutch West India Company, having little interest in the Pacific route. With the flagship Amsterdam along with the Delft under vice-admiral Geen Huyghen Schapenham and with Adolph Decker, captain of marines, Le Hermite's fleet left Texel on 29-4-1623, raided the coast of Guinea, then sailed south of to the coast of Patagonia. It then passed through the Strait of Le Maire and sighted Cape Horn on 14-2-1624. While in the region the expedition discovered and anchored in the Bay of Nassau, charting the surrounding islands (including the Hermite group). In addition, it was shown for the first time that it was possible to sail northward through the Le Maire strait. After coasting South America and plundering a few Spanish settlements, the fleet continued across the Pacific and was eventually disbanded at Batavia. Le Hermite, already a sick man at the time of the outward voyage, died at Callao in Peru and was buried on San Lorenzo Island near Lima. … [Click Below for Full Description]

BRAHE, Tycho
Johannes Godofred Schönwetter, Frankfurt, 1648. Two parts in one vol., 4to, pp. [vi], [3-]470, [7]; 217, [1], [1 leaf, blank], with large woodcut printer’s device on both titles, and numerous illustrations and diagrams in text; the two leaves of dedication to the Bishop of Munich erroneously bound in at the end of the volume; some mild browning and foxing; the final twenty leaves with a few wormholes filled in, affecting a few letters, otherwise an unusually fine copy, bound in contemporary southern French red morocco, gilt arms to covers. A WONDERFUL COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF TYCHO’S ‘WORKS’, COMPRISING HIS TWO MOST SIGNIFICANT PUBLICATIONS, THE PROGYMNASMATA (1602) AND DE MUNDI AETHEREI (1603), WHICH TOGETHER FORM ‘THE FOUNDATION ON WHICH KEPLER, AND LATER NEWTON, BUILT THEIR ASTRONOMICAL SYSTEMS’ (Sparrow). PRINTED AT FRANKFURT AT THE VERY END OF THE THIRTY YEARS’ WAR AND ON PAPER STOCK GENERALLY TENDING TO SEVERE BROWNING, THIS WORK IS NEVER FOUND IN SUCH FINE CONDITION AND IN A HIGHLY REMARKABLE BINDING AS HERE. ‘Tycho’s influence and reputation stems from achievements that fall into three quite distinct categories. The one that was most important during Tycho’s life and for the fifty years following it was cosmological in character. It was initiated in 1572 by the appearance of what has come to be called Tycho’s nova (now classified as a supernova) and raised to the dimension of a crusade by the appearance of the even more spectacular comet of 1577. During the ensuing decade Tycho composed lengthy monographs on each phenomenon. These would form the great bulk of hi … [Click Below for Full Description]

HARVEY, William
Arnold Leers, Rotterdam, 1648. First edition of the Exercitationes, one of two issues published simultaneously (see below), of this rare and important work, a defence of his theory of the circulation of the blood against the Parisian physician Jean Riolan the younger. It is here bound after the first Rotterdam edition of De motu cordis itself, an important edition in its own right, as it contains a corrected text, with the preface by Zacharias Sylvius (1608-1664); it also contains the first edition of the substantial treatise by James de Back (1593-1657), Dissertatio de corde . Annexa Appendix pro circulatione Harveiana. Keynes called the Exercitationes "one of [Harvey's] major contributions to medical science" (Life, p. 327). They were appended to later editions of De motu, as here; as Keynes says in his Bibliography of William Harvey, "The two treatises have for too long been considered merely an appendix to De motu - they are far more important than this." The only copy of the Exercitationes auctioned in the last forty years was the Haskell F. Norman copy, also bound with the Rotterdam edition of De motu (Christie's, June 1998, $9200, re-sold at Sotheby's PMM sale, October 1999, £6900). ?Norman 1007 & 1010. De motu cordis, first published in 1628, "is probably the most important book in the history of medicine. What Vesalius was to anatomy, Harvey was to physiology; the whole scientific outlook on the human body was transformed, and behind almost every important medical advance in modern times lies the work of Harvey" (Heirs of Hippocrates). An outstanding copy of this rare compendious scholastic mathematical work by the Jesuit mathematician Mario Bettini (1582-1657), encompassing all the major fields of mathematics, but paying special attention to geometry. Bettini's Aerarium covers a wealth of information not just in mathematics but also astronomical geometry, all of which had, as with Bettini's previous Apiaria of 1645, gone through the Collegio Romano's rigorous censorship under the eye of Christoph Grienberger (d.1636), who as Clavius' successor was responsible for enforcing adherence to Aristotle in matters of natural philosophy. European scientific thought during the period 1620-1660 was dominated by the revolutionary investigations of Galileo and others into the nature of the solar system. The Jesuits, as the chief proponents of traditional Aristotelian teachings, were hailed by many as the intellectual champions of the Catholic Church, the philosophical mathematical and Scriptural arguments of Jesuit writers against the Copernican theory of a sun-centered solar system the main driving forces of seventeenth century inquiry. At the beginning of the seventeenth century to understand meant to grasp regularities, and this knowledge was based largely on the accepted authority of ancient texts. However as the worldview expanded the certainty of such views began to diminish. For the philosophically well-educated mathematics appeared as one of the few refuges of eternal truths untainted by the possibility of such dissent. Jesuit colleges, such as that at Parma where B … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHURMAN, Anna Maria Van.
Ex officina Elsiviriorum, Lvgd, Batavor, 1648. TP + [i]-[iv] = Lectoris + [vi] = frontispiece portrait of the author + 1-374 + 1 blank leaf. First Edition. With the engraved self-portrait frontispiece that the author executed in 1640 when she was 33 years old. Below this, van Schurman has written: Cernitis hic picta nostros in imagine vultus: / Si negat ars formam, gratia vestra dabit (See my features portrayed in this image, If art denies beauty, then your favor will grant it). Despite an aversion to her growing notoriety, van Schurman was finally persuaded by Leyden's Professor of Theology, Dr. André Rivet (her friend and spiritual adviser whom she referred to as "her father in Christ") to publish a collection of her works and, more particularly, her correspondence. Elzevier published the work and, for the first time, allowed her some significant control over the printed text. This she did, reprinting her now famousDissertatio, de Ingenii Muliebris ad Doctrinam and including copies of her letters - fourteen written in French and fifty-nine in Latin, Greek and Hebrew, all addressed to a wide variety of famous men and women. The book also included twenty-two of her Latin poems and the entire text was edited by Friedrich Spanheim, the rector of the University of Leden, who also wrote a laudatory Preface. In her outstanding book on Anna Marie van Schurman, Anne R. Larsen notes that "more than any of her previous publications, the Opuscula affirmed her authoritative standing in the Republic of Letters" (p. 175). This was so true that the book saw a second edition in 1650 and a … [Click Below for Full Description]
