ALDROVANDI, Ulisse (1522-1605)
[colophon:] Bologna, Giovanni Battista Ferroni, 1648. Folio (352 x 242 mm), pp [vi, without blank 4] 979 [13], with a fine engraved title and ca 1200 woodcuts in text; an exceptionally fine, fresh, spotless copy in contemporary polished vellum with overlapping fore edges, red edges, gilt arms on sides (see below).First edition, an exceptional copy, of the great illustrated catalogue of the 'metals' of Aldrovandi's museum, i.e. fossils, shells, minerals and crystals, ethnographic stone objects and utensils, lamps, antique vases and marble busts, terra sigillata, kidney stones, or any other object with the properties of 'stoniness'.Aldrovandi's museum was one of the first natural history museums, and it has survived intact to this day in Bologna. Aldrovandi (1522-1605) was professor of natural sciences and director of the botanic garden (which he founded) of the University of Bologna. His collections were housed in a special museum and library building within the gardens, and acted as a reference collection for research in natural history. Aldrovandi's goal was simply to catalogue the entire natural world, and the museum was envisioned as 'an attempt to transfer the world of nature from the often inaccessible outdoors to the restricted interior of a museum' (Giuseppi Olmi in Impey and MacGregor eds, The origins of museums p 8). Rather than being merely a collection of mirabilia in the Wunderkammer tradition, it was a scientific assembly, an encyclopaedia of the natural world presented as a theatrum naturae, although still betraying the Mannerist predilection for the freakish … [Click Below for Full Description]

Quarles, Francis; Alexander Pennecuik; Alexander Robertson, "Ned Scrawl," Andrew Clubson, Thomas Woolrich
London: Richard Royston. The Quarles is a Third Edition from 1648; this and the commonplace book are bound in mid 19th century half red calf and green paper-covered boards, approximately 7.5 x 6 inches. Paginated (6) 62 (2) pp. this appears to be complete, but OCLC cites a portrait plate, and there is none present here. The title page has been trimmed and there are small crenolated circular patches at the gutter of the title page and the next page (see pics). Quarles is followed by one printed leaf, which is the dedicatory poem to Alexander Pennecuik by John Forbes that appears in 'The Description of Tweeddale' published 1715. The 34 pp of handwritten verse that succeeds this appear to be mid 18th century and almost undoubtedly by a Scotsman, first, 'Godly Sarah or the Sighing Sister' (authored by 'Ned Scrawl' and published in Edinburgh in 1737); 'To Delia, being detain'd from her by Sickness' (we find no record of publication), Alexander Robertson of Struan's 'Inscription of Mount Alexander' and also 'Struan's Apology to Mrs. Alicia McKenzie' (Alexander Robertson was the 13th Chief of Struan, 1689-1749); 'The Character of Sir Ewen Cameron...' (Cameron died in 1719), 'On the Murther of King Charles the first by the then Schoolmaster of Leith, an Ode' (here, too, no record of publication we could ascertain), 'An English-mans Grace over his Pock-pudding' (This was penned by Alexander Pennecuik and was first published in 1750), and finally 'Thanksgiving after Moat' (no record we could find of publication). There is also a smaller leaf with calculations bound in explaining the … [Click Below for Full Description]

He was also a serjeant-at-law and in 1648 he published an often cited work justifying his reasons for supporting the Royalist cause." 'The most expansive and cogently argued of all Royalist self-vindications'. In it he explains that he initially took up arms because of the Militia Ordinance which he considered an illegal act because the king did not give his royal assent to it. In the opinion of Dallison no new law can be passed without the assent of the king, so those who marched under the authority of the Militia Ordinance were committing high treason, and it was the duty of all loyal subjects to defend the king against those who break the law and commit high treason." Pietro TESTA (Lucca 1612 – 1650 Rome)
Etching with drypoint, circa 1648-50, first state, on laid paper with indistinctly legible watermark including a circle ca. 50 mm in diameter, possibly an anchor and a letter M within. Signed in plate lower center “P. Testa fecit.” Image and sheet 265 x 417 mm, trimmed on the plate mark. Original unobtrusive vertical center fold and vestige verso of another old crease off center; small ink splotch and skinned spot at lower edge at the letters “fec”; archivally matted (43 x 49 cm); unidentified miniscule ink inscription “I-B. 533” verso center; otherwise fine condition. See Cropper, Elizabeth, Pietro Testa 1612-1650: Prints and Drawings (Philadephia Museum of Art, 1988), no. 121, pp. 262-5, 290 (state I). Hailed already by peers as draftsman and printmaker, Testa ranks with Castiglione in Italian 17th-century etching. This plate concludes Testa’s possibly truncated series, near the end of his life, of three “Scenes from the Life of Achilles.” It illustrates the Iliad at Book 22, lines 395-404, translating, as Cropper says (op. cit. at p. 262), the walls of Troy “from Greek into Latin in the form of the Colosseum, the Torre delle Milizie, and the Pantheon.” In Testa’s highly original invention, reminiscent nevertheless of Rubens’s and Poussin’s renditions of the Death of Hippolytus, Achilles guided by crowning Victory must yet be prescient of his own inexorable fate as the frenetic horses plunge the chariot downwards to the shade of darkness. Cropper observes of this plate (op. cit. at p. xxviii) that Testa “determined to emphasize the closed, muscular forms of figures throug … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pietro TESTA detto "Il Lucchesino"
Acquaforte e puntasecca, 1648-1650 circa, firmata in lastra, in basso al centro "P. Testa fecit". Etching with drypoint, 1648 – 1650 circa, inscribed in the image above the center of the lower margin "P. Testa fecit". Example of first state, before any publisher’s address. Good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, with "double encircled fleur-de-lys", thin margins, very good condition. The print shows a climactic moment in the Trojan War, when Achilles, roused out of his silence by the killing of his friend Patroclus, kills King Priam's son Hector. Incensed with wrath, Achilles takes his vengeance a step further, and drags Hector's body from his chariot around the walls of Troy. The king and his wife, who were unable to dissuade this shameful act, remain on top of the walls. She faints at the sight of her son's body being dragged through the dust; not at his noble death. This print is part of Testa's incomplete Li … [Click Below for Full Description]

Binding tight and solid. A posthumous published collection of some of his key works including Bentivoglio's history of relations between Flanders and France and of the Dutch War of Independence. Guido Bentivoglio d'Aragona (4 October 1579 - 7 September 1644) was an Italian cardinal, statesman and historian. Under Clement's successor, Pope Paul V, he was appointed titular archbishop of Rhodes, 14 May 1607, with a dispensation for being three months shy of the canonical age and not having yet received the sacred orders, in order to give him appropriate credentials as nuncio at the court of the Archdukes Albert and Isabella in the Habsburg Netherlands, (1 June 1607 - 24 October 1615). He arrived in Brussels when negotiations between the Habsburgs and the Dutch Republic to end the Eighty Years' War were about to begin. Following the conclusion of the Twelve Years' Truce in April 1609, he was greatly concerned with the position of Catholicism in the Republic. Accredited to a Habsburg court, he likewise took a keen interest in the final stages of the reign and the succession of … [Click Below for Full Description]

This wonderful, miniature version of the Leo Belgicus is based on the original 1538 Aitsinger form with the lion standing facing right with the right paw raised and holding a shield. This version is beautifully engraved with a stippled sea filled with ships, a sea monster and a compass rose. Frontis is a touch grubby and shows a tiny bit of edge chipping. Title leaf floated, with period signatures of Robert Bridge and Joseph MacIntyre. H2 with small hole along gutter. Pale staining to margins (heavier to first half of the volume). Tiny worm run to edge of first couple of leaves, and some tiny runs to margins in places. Scattered pale marginal foxing. Withal, a handsome VG+ copy of this title. Item #44496 A lovely copy of this famous Royalist publication, purporting to be the memoirs of the recently executed King. So controversial was it that Parliament commissioned an answer with John Milton's Eikonoklastes. Milton was the first to cast doubt on its authorship, and Madan's New Bibliography of the Eikon Basilike demonstrated that while Dr. John Gauden was the author, he worked closely from Charles' manuscripts.

Rechts in beeld twee ruiters in galop. [Click Below for Full Description]

MANUSCRIT] CHIRAC (Pierre)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Bacon, Francis
Amsterdam, Elzevier, 1648, 12 , mit gestochenem Titel, (36), 612, 48 pp. 87 pp., Pergamenteinband d.Zt. mit neuerem Rückenschildchen St.a.Tit. Scarce Latin edition of Bacon's celebrated work, published the same year as the Leiden edition. First published posthumously in the year of Bacon's death (1626), Sylva Sylvarum is a an aptly-described "miscellany of topics?", dealing with the prolongation of life, the natural world, and the wisdom of the ancients, arranged in 1000 numbered paragraphs. William Rawley, Bacon's secretary, chose to addend the unfinished manuscript of New Atlantis to the former work, if only for convenience's sake. Bacon's utopian population famously practice eugenic breeding and are committed fundamentally to the pursuit of scientific learning. Having enjoyed five English editions by 1639, the present work attests to Bacon's popularity beyond British shores Elzevir in Amsterdam and Hackium in Leiden brought out simultaneous Latin translations in 1648. Hackium's re-engraved title page, interestingly, follows the original of 1626 rather closely, including a globe with outlines of the continents.. Die Naturbeschreibung in zehn Centurien mit Naturbeobachtungen verschiedenster Art. Der letzte Teil "Novus Atlas, Opus imperfectum, cum praefatione W. Rawley" "contains a description of the Island of Bensalem, on which there is a cooperative college of Science called Salomon's House .. it ranks among the bestknown and most delightful Utopian writings in the world and has been perhaps the most influential" DSB I, 375

It was first published in French as Les voyages fameux (Paris, 1648) and here translated by Jan Hendrik Glazemaker (1620-1682). ASSARINO (Luca).
In Bologna, per Giacomo Monti, 1648. 2 parties en 1 volume, petit in-4. 3ff. 204pp. + 4ff. 140pp. 1f. Palau, 18586.

Bontekoe, Willem Ysbrantsz, & Dirck Albertsz Raven
T'Amstelredam: Joost Hartgers, 1648. Small 4to, pp. [4], 56 (i.e. 76); collating [A1]-E8; engraved woodcut vignette of 2 ships on both primary and secondary title pages; historiated initial on A3; includes the Journal of Dirck Albertsz Raven on p. 59-76; old blue paper-covered boards; small oil stain in the top fore-margin throughout; worn, but sound. First published in Haarlem, 1646. Willem Ysbrandtszoon Bontekoe (1587-1657) was a captain in the Dutch East India Company (VOC), who made only one voyage for the company (1618-1625). He became widely known because of the journal of his adventures that was published in 1646 under the title Journael ofte gedenckwaerdige beschrijvinge van de Oost-Indische. In 1618 Bontekoe enlisted in the service of the Dutch East India Company. On a voyage to Java he was shipwrecked, along with part of his crew, and continued in a lifeboat. After a grueling journey, including an attack by hostile natives on Sumatra, they reached Batavia on Java. Bontekoe was given a new command and an order to harass the Chinese coast, returning to Holland in 1625. The OCLC record calls for a portrait (and indeed in other editions there is a portrait), but neither Alden nor Sabin does for this edition. Sabin 6337, and 67980n (detailing the 30-odd editions up to 1810); European-Americana 648/21; 3 copies in OCLC, none in the U.S.
