Guido Bentivoglio d'Aragona (4 October 1579 - 7 September 1644) was an Italian cardinal, statesman and historian. Under Clement's successor, Pope Paul V, he was appointed titular archbishop of Rhodes, 14 May 1607, with a dispensation for being three months shy of the canonical age and not having yet received the sacred orders, in order to give him appropriate credentials as nuncio at the court of the Archdukes Albert and Isabella in the Habsburg Netherlands, (1 June 1607 - 24 October 1615). He arrived in Brussels when negotiations between the Habsburgs and the Dutch Republic to end the Eighty Years' War were about to begin. Following the conclusion of the Twelve Years' Truce in April 1609, he was greatly concerned with the position of Catholicism in the Republic. Accredited to a Habsburg court, he likewise took a keen interest in the final stages of the reign and the succession of … [Click Below for Full Description]

GIOVANNI FRANCESCO DA ROMA.
Rome, Sacra Congregatione de Propaganda Fide, 1648. 4to, pp. [4], 88; woodcut device of the Sacra Congregatione de Propaganda Fide to title, woodcut initials; a few small marks; a very good copy in 19th-century black morocco, elaborate blind-stamped panel and gilt fillet border to covers, spine gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers; small loss at head of spine, some rubbing to extremities.Rare first edition of this important account of the Kingdom of Kongo in the mid seventeenth century by the Capuchin missionary Giovanni Francesco da Roma. 'This description of the kingdom of Congo equals, and in certain respects surpasses the much better known accounts of Pigafetta-Lopez (1591) and of Cavazzi (1687). Giovanni Francesco da Roma is the only one of these authors to provide an eye-witness account of the city of São Salvador [M'banza-Kongo], since Pigafetta had revised the memoirs of Lopez and Alamandini those of Cavazzi, who, moreover, never visited São Salvador himself. The greater part of the work comprises a lively and fascinating description of Congolese civilisation in the mid seventeenth century' (translated from W.G.L. Randles in Annales Économies, Sociétés, Civilisations 1968 p. 225).As Giovanni here explains, he and five other Capuchin missionaries were first selected by pope Urban VIII to undertake a mission to the Kingdom of Kongo in 1640. With the Dutch invasion of Angola and the outbreak of the Second Portuguese War, however, the project was suspended, and it was not until 1645 that Giovanni eventually set sail from Spain. VISSCHER, Nicolas
Amsterdam,: Nicolao Johannis Visscher, 1648. Amsterdam,: Nicolao Johannis Visscher,, 1648. Deuno Formâ Leonis Curiosè Editus a Nicolao Johannis Visscher Anno 1648. 1648. Hand-coloured engraved map. What the 'Truce Map' made implicit - the split of the Seventeen Provinces - the Leo Hollandicus made terrifyingly explicit. At the end of the 12 Year Truce, Claes Janzsoon Visscher published his 'Leo Hollandicus'. In stark contrast to his 'Truce Map', the Hollandicus depicts a lion rampant facing east and brandishing a cutlass, with the patriotic motto 'Patriae Defensio' (Defender of the Country), engraved upon the blade. Above the lion are depictions of Dutch citizens, with iceboats and wind carts, to the borders are vignettes of Dutch towns, with the coats-of-arms of the towns in the province of Holland, below. Whereas Visscher's 'Truce Map' celebrated the fruits of peace that came with the cessation of hostilities; the 'Hollandicus' highlighted the Dutch Republic's determination to defend its new-found independence. The map also emphasises the breaking apart of the Seventeen Provinces, between the Republican north and the Spanish-controlled south. Van der Heijden records only one institutional example of the third state, that in the Montreal State Library. [colophon:] Bologna, Giovanni Battista Ferroni, 1648. Folio (352 x 242 mm), pp [vi, without blank 4] 979 [13], with a fine engraved title and ca 1200 woodcuts in text; an exceptionally fine, fresh, spotless copy in contemporary polished vellum with overlapping fore edges, red edges, gilt arms on sides (see below).First edition, an exceptional copy, of the great illustrated catalogue of the 'metals' of Aldrovandi's museum, i.e. fossils, shells, minerals and crystals, ethnographic stone objects and utensils, lamps, antique vases and marble busts, terra sigillata, kidney stones, or any other object with the properties of 'stoniness'.Aldrovandi's museum was one of the first natural history museums, and it has survived intact to this day in Bologna. Aldrovandi (1522-1605) was professor of natural sciences and director of the botanic garden (which he founded) of the University of Bologna. His collections were housed in a special museum and library building within the gardens, and acted as a reference collection for research in natural history. Aldrovandi's goal was simply to catalogue the entire natural world, and the museum was envisioned as 'an attempt to transfer the world of nature from the often inaccessible outdoors to the restricted interior of a museum' (Giuseppi Olmi in Impey and MacGregor eds, The origins of museums p 8). Rather than being merely a collection of mirabilia in the Wunderkammer tradition, it was a scientific assembly, an encyclopaedia of the natural world presented as a theatrum naturae, although still betraying the Mannerist predilection for the freakish … [Click Below for Full Description]

Quarles, Francis; Alexander Pennecuik; Alexander Robertson, "Ned Scrawl," Andrew Clubson, Thomas Woolrich
London: Richard Royston. The Quarles is a Third Edition from 1648; this and the commonplace book are bound in mid 19th century half red calf and green paper-covered boards, approximately 7.5 x 6 inches. Paginated (6) 62 (2) pp. this appears to be complete, but OCLC cites a portrait plate, and there is none present here. The title page has been trimmed and there are small crenolated circular patches at the gutter of the title page and the next page (see pics). Quarles is followed by one printed leaf, which is the dedicatory poem to Alexander Pennecuik by John Forbes that appears in 'The Description of Tweeddale' published 1715. The 34 pp of handwritten verse that succeeds this appear to be mid 18th century and almost undoubtedly by a Scotsman, first, 'Godly Sarah or the Sighing Sister' (authored by 'Ned Scrawl' and published in Edinburgh in 1737); 'To Delia, being detain'd from her by Sickness' (we find no record of publication), Alexander Robertson of Struan's 'Inscription of Mount Alexander' and also 'Struan's Apology to Mrs. Alicia McKenzie' (Alexander Robertson was the 13th Chief of Struan, 1689-1749); 'The Character of Sir Ewen Cameron...' (Cameron died in 1719), 'On the Murther of King Charles the first by the then Schoolmaster of Leith, an Ode' (here, too, no record of publication we could ascertain), 'An English-mans Grace over his Pock-pudding' (This was penned by Alexander Pennecuik and was first published in 1750), and finally 'Thanksgiving after Moat' (no record we could find of publication). Item #44735 "Sir Charles Dallison was an officer in the Royalist army during the English Civil War. He was also a serjeant-at-law and in 1648 he published an often cited work justifying his reasons for supporting the Royalist cause." 'The most expansive and cogently argued of all Royalist self-vindications'. In it he explains that he initially took up arms because of the Militia Ordinance which he considered an illegal act because the king did not give his royal assent to it. In the opinion of Dallison no new law can be passed without the assent of the king, so those who marched under the authority of the Militia Ordinance were committing high treason, and it was the duty of all loyal subjects to defend the king against those who break the law and commit high treason." From the library of a descendent of the famous Parliamentary military commander during the English Civil War. [Attributes: First Edition]
