Gage, Thomas
London, 1648. [10],220,[12]pp. Small folio. 18th-century speckled calf, gilt stamp on front board, expertly rebacked in antique matching calf, boards re-gilt, leather label, spine gilt. Binding a bit worn at corners and edges. Faint stain on leaves B2 and B3. A few contemporary notes in text, some later pencil notes in margins. Very good. The Signet Library copy, with their gilt stamp on the front board. One of the most celebrated travel books of its day. Gage was an Englishman raised in Spain. He entered the Dominican Order and set out for the New World, traveling by way of the Philippines and across the Pacific. He spent most of the next twelve years in Central America, the West Indies, Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Panama. When he finally returned to England and converted to the Church of England, he wrote this book to urge British seizure of the Spanish empire in America. Since the Spanish had jealously guarded foreign access to their dominions, this was the first detailed description to reach Europe of the regions visited by Gage, and it was widely reprinted and translated. The Streeter copy sold for $250 in 1966. HILL 665. PALAU 96480. STREETER SALE 193. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 648/68. JCB (3)II:369. SABIN 26298. WING G109. BEINECKE LESSER ANTILLES COLLECTION 38.

BONTEKOE, Willem Ysbrantsz.
Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 381; Tiele, Bibl. 159; Tiele, Mém. 173; Verkruijsse & Verhoeven 1648-03. One of the most compelling and entertaining travel accounts of Dutch literature. Bontekoe details his eventful 8-year voyage to the East Indies. The vivid description of his ship accidently exploding in the Sunda Strait, killing almost a third of the crew, no doubt made a huge impression on his readers. Bontekoe returned in 1625, but his travelogue was not published until 1646. It was an immediate success and went through numerous editions. From the beginning Raven's short account of a voyage to Greenland, during which he too suffered shipwreck, was added to Bontekoe's voyage.Almost all editions of Bontekoe's narrative are rare. This edition is a page-for-page reprint of an edition published by Hartgers in the same year. The original edition appeared at Hoorn in 1646, printed by Isaac Willemsz. for Jan Jansz. Deutel.A bit cut short; the two corners at the bottom of the plate gone, hardly affecting the plate. Good copy of the vivid description of Bontekoe's voyage to the East Indies.

FISCH, Colonel W.
Gloz (Klodzko/Glatz) 1648 - Gloz (Klodzko/Glatz), 12th July 1648. Folio (32x21cm). Text, one page of a folio bifolium. Original fold marks and some mount residue on verso, but overall a very good letter. Colonel Fisch reports that Swedish General Wittenberg had amassed about 5,000 men and 20 cannons in the Principality of Liegnitz between Konradswalde and Schoenfeld and was marching forward. Wittenberg had passed Weisswasser and united with the troops of Major General Müller. According to statements made by prisoners of war, a further advance to Troppau was planned. This letter gives important information about troop movements immediately leading up to the final battle of the Thirty Years War at Prague (25 July - 1 November 1648). Ottavio Piccolomini (1599-1656) was an Italian nobleman whose military career included service as a Spanish general and then as a field marshal of the Holy Roman Empire (Wikipedia).

Bacon, Francis.
Apud Franciscum Hackium, 1648. Compendium of scientific (and also quaintly "traditional") knowledge: This wide-ranging gathering of interesting observations in natural history was first published posthumously by the author's chaplain and secretary, Dr. Rawley, in 1626, and appears here translated into Latin by Jacob Gruterus. The present edition was, as Willems puts it, "exécutée" at Leyden by Hackius for Elzevier; some examples bear Elzevier's imprint and some Hackius's. The Novus Atlas accompanies the title work, with both having prefaces by Rawley. Provenance: Front pastedown with armorial bookplate of Alexander Oswald Brodie (not, please note, the American officer and governor of Arizona Territory); title-page with Brodie's inked inscription, dated 1839, Dresden.

[London]: Printed in the yeare, 1648. [2], 92, [2 (blank)] pp. Bate, "physician and author, was born in Maids Moreton, Buckinghamshire, in 1608, the son of John Bate of Burton. Migrating to Queen's College and then to St Edmund's, Bate graduated BA in 1626 and MA and BA in 1629, the latter giving him licence to practise around Oxford, and DM in 1637. Early observers may have labelled him a puritan, but when Charles I established the court in Oxford Bate became a member of the royal party, and was made physician to the king. Settling in London by 1639 Bate became a fellow of the College of Physicians in 1640 and served as censor in 1645, 1646, and 1648, and was named an elect in 1657. In 1656 he was part of the board of physicians which recommended the establishment of college of physicians in Edinburgh. However, Bate is best known for his published defence of Charles I in his confrontation with parliament. The Regall Apology, or, The Declaration of the Commons, written in English, was first published in Paris and London in 1648" [ODNB] and is here offered in the first edition.
