[Click Below for Full Description]

Florens Schoonhoven
Amsterdam: 1648. Emblemata Florentii Schoonhovii I.C. Goudani, Partim Moralia partim etiam Civilia by Florens Schoonhoven One of the most popular "emblem" books of its time, which went through four editions (this is the fourth, published in the year of the author's death, 1648). The text features 74 allegorical prints which illustrate popular proverbs, morals, and poems. Each emblem is followed by two or three pages of commentary, in Latin. This is the original text, rebound with new endpapers in 3/4 leather in the late 19th century. The book was held in the reference section of the Springfield, MA public library and has library marks inside the front cover and to the title page. The covers show light wear but are weakening along the joints; the text is firmly bound, and the pages are in fine condition for a book of such great age, only minor signs of age or handling. A very rare and attractive collector's item. Measures 6.25" X 8", viii + 235 pages. Ships promptly & securely.

[Palafox y Mendoza, Juan]
[Puebla de Los Angeles, 1648. 274,[16] leaves, paginated on rectos only. Folio. Contemporary limp vellum, manuscript title on spine. Minor edge wear, lacks free endpapers. A few early manuscript notes in text, minor worming to early leaves, minimal dampstaining. Marcas de fuego of the Convento de San Agustín de Puebla on top and bottom edges. Very good. A rare work on the mid-17th-century religious battles of Mexico, in which the Bishop of Puebla de Los Angeles defends himself against charges made by local Dominicans, Franciscans and Augustinians (the so-called "regulares"), and criticizes them for their privileges and luxurious lifestyle. This is also an early Puebla de los Angeles imprint, not noted in Medina's bibliographies. The text provides a great deal of information on the history and administration of the Catholic Church among the natives of Mexico and in the bishopric of Puebla, including lists of the names and positions of the clerics in the diocese. Palafox scolds his critics for their lavish ways, arguing that they impoverish the local Indians, leaving nothing but opulent convents. Palafox discusses many of their excesses at length, and this book was a means for protecting the rights and authority of the Church of Puebla against the encroachment of the "regulares." Juan Palafox y Mendoza (1600-59) was born in Navarre and educated at Salamanca and appointed a member of the Council of the Indies. He later became a priest, and in 1639 was made Bishop of Puebla de Los Angeles. Palafox arrived in Mexico in 1640 and soon ran afoul of the local Franciscans, Domin … [Click Below for Full Description]

HELMONT, Jan Baptist van
L. Elzevir, 1648. Hardcover. Small 4to, 2 works in 1 vol. [34], 800 (i.e. 808) pp.: 3 parts in 1. [8], 110, 115, 88 pp. Small library stamp on first title-page repeated in blank margin. Woodcut printer's device on both title-pages and 1 engraved double-portrait in the first volume; early ownership inscription "Antonii Mensonis" of Amsterdam; subsequently in the library of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland; some light marginal foxing. Contemporary or near-contemporary vellum, red title labels on spine (chipped), including the place and date of imprint "Amstelodami 1648" (part of first word with loss). A crisp and attractive copy, completely unsophisticated, complete with the engraved double-portrait of the author and his son. Very good. First Collected Edition of "The Dawn of Medicine." Among the many extraordinary aspects of this work is the author's bold challege to physicians who prescribe bloodletting and purging for the treatment of fevers. Tantamount to a randomized medical comparison, Helmont proposed CASTING LOTS to decide which patients should be treated by "orthodox" physicians, and which patients should be treated by him without bloodletting or purging. That Helmont is addressing treatment uncertainty and treatment bias was not lost on the editors of the James Lind Library Illustrative Timeline (online). Whereas earlier examples of medical "control groups" were suggested (i.e. al-Razi, 10th-century C.E.), this is the earliest proposal of a truly RANDOMIZED medical experiment known to us, namely the casting of lots in the form of a contest. A Work Long Expected, And Now Published According to the Most Authentique Copies. London: Printed by Richard Bishop, And are to be sold by Iohn Crook, 1648. [iv], 123, [1], 149, 130-160, 171-226 pp. Pagination irregular. Text complete. Quarto (7" x 5-1/2"). Later three-quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt title to spine, endpapers renewed. Negligible light rubbing to extremities, light fading to spine. Light browning and occasional faint dampspotting to text, early repair to upper corner of title page. A nice copy. * First edition of Books Six and Eight, one of three issues from 1648. First printed in 1594-1597, Hooker's influential work is concerned with the general principles involved in the Church of England's legal, political and social position. All early editions contain five books (though their title pages always claim to offer six). A seventh book was published in 1662. Many scholars doubt the authenticity of Books Six, Seven and Eight. The three 1648 imprints are scarce. OCLC locates no copies of any of these three in North American law libraries. English Short-Title Catalogue R202054. [Attributes: First Edition]

Gimignani, Giacinto (1606-1681)
1648. According to a recent publication by Loredana Lorizzo, this scene representing S. Philip Neri in adoration of the infant Jesus at the presence of Mary and Joseph was very dear to the painter Giacinto Gimignani for he included the original painting in his own will. As Lorizzo argues, the painting must have been realized in 1648 to celebrate the birth of his son, named after the saint. In his 'post mortem' inventory (1680) Gimignani mentions a plate with "S. Philip with the Madonna" which is most likely the plate used for this impression. The etching at the Casanatense reproduced in Lorizzo's article presents some discrepancies with ours. The inscriptions are the clearest difference: the name of the Saint is reported on the stairs where he is kneeling [S.FILIPPO NERI] and on the bottom right is the address of the publisher: [Si Stampa da Vincenzo Billij alla Chiesa nova. Hycinthus Gimignianus Inven. 1649]. The illustrated impression, preserved at the Casanatense Library in Rome, results much smaller in respect to ours, as it was cut before publishing. Also, the treatment of light and shadow in the Casanatense impression is more dramatic, realized with intense crosshatchings in the darker areas. Our impression is more delicate and it is thus a remarkable state, possibly the first. Our impression was cut to the plate mark and pasted on a thick sheet of laid paper. On the bottom left, in pen and brown ink a different attribution is given: 'Carlo Morato fecit', possibly pointing to Carlo Maratta, a painter in the same circle of Gimignani. The space left blank under the comp … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pietro TESTA detto "Il Lucchesino" (Lucca 1611 - Roma 1650)
Acquaforte e puntasecca, 1648-1650 circa, firmata in lastra, in basso al centro "P. Testa fecit". Etching with drypoint, 1648 - 1650 circa, inscribed in the image above the center of the lower margin "P. Testa fecit". Example of first state, before any publisher's address. Good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, with "double encircled fleur-de-lys", thin margins, very good condition. The print shows a climactic moment in the Trojan War, when Achilles, roused out of his silence by the killing of his friend Patroclus, kills King Priam's son Hector. Incensed with wrath, Achilles takes his vengeance a step further, and drags Hector's body from his chariot around the walls of Troy. The king and his wife, who were unable to dissuade this shameful act, remain on top of the walls. She faints at the sight of her son's body being dragged through the dust; not at his noble death. Pietro TESTA detto "Il Lucchesino" (Lucca 1611 - Roma 1650)
"Acquaforte e puntasecca, 1648-50, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. [Click Below for Full Description]

Minor browning, but very good. Very Rare First Edition, with no copies except this one appearing in auction records; it was published one year before the 1649 Leiden edition that is sometimes erroneously cited as the first. Riolan's Encheiridium anatomicum is the work he is best remembered for, since its rejection of some of William Harvey's ideas on blood circulation prompted Harvey to reply with his Exercitationes duae anatomicae de circulatione sanguinis ad Joannem Riolanum (1649), the only published answer he ever issued to criticisms of De motu cordis. Contrary to Riolan's intent, his Encheiridium ended up helping to validate Harvey's theory, as Harvey used Exercitationes duae not only to demolish Riolan's Galenic notions on the circulation but also to reinforce his own ideas with more direct experimental evidence of the circulation than given in De motu cordis.
