[Treaty of Munster]
The Hague, 1648. [27]pp. Engraved vignette of the coat of arms of the Netherlands on the titlepage. Small quarto. Modern gilt-stamped vellum, gilt label. Some chipping to label. Very good. The official Dutch edition of the important Treaty of Munster, by which the Dutch ended their long war with Spain and consolidated their New World gains in Brazil, the West Indies, and North America. Davenport notes that the Treaty of Munster is the first instance in which Spain "conceded to another nation, in clear and explicit terms, and in a public treaty, the right to sail to, trade, and acquire territory in the West Indies." It therefore broke irrevocably the monopoly on New World trade and colonization claimed by Spain and Portugal as part of 15th-century treaties and Papal bulls. An important treaty relating to the commercial development of the West Indies and European possessions in the New World. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 648/170. PALAU 338556. KNUTTEL 5733. DAVENPORT 40.

Guiffart :

Amsterdam, Louis Elzevir, 1648. Folio. Engraved title + [3]f + 543 (misnumbered 547)p. With 70 engraved plates and 10 double-sided leaves of tables. Contemporary vellum; neatly rebacked. The handsome first edition in French produced on excellent paper; the translation by Helie Poirier made from the original Latin of 1647 published at the same press. This work on Dutch military architecture is unique in its period for the 40 accurate plans of existing fortified towns and for its careful attention to quantity surveying. The fine engraved title shows surveyors at work with a fortress in the background. Dögen (c.1605-72), a Prussian mathematician, presents his arguments based on practical experience gained in military service under Maurice and later, Frederick Henry of Orange. He considered the building of fortresses during peace time one of the best guarantees for the prevention of war. A few occasional light spots, but a very good, crisp copy, rare in this state. From the collection of the Earl of Ancaster with his engraved armorial bookplate pasted inside front cover (signed Harry Soane 1896). Jähns 1128-31; Jordan 0910; Rahir 1072; Spaulding & Karpinski 151; Willems 1063. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Pietro TESTA detto "Il Lucchesino" (Lucca 1611 - Roma 1650)
1648. "Acquaforte e puntasecca, 1648 - 50, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. [Click Below for Full Description]

La Chapelle, Georges de.
Paris, Antoine Estienne / chez le Blond, 1648. - Folio (240 x 367 mm). Engraved title, 3 pp. of dedication, 12 leaves of text interleaved with 12 engraved plates, 1 leaf (Privilege du Roy), woodcut headpieces and initials. The plates, probably by Noel (not Nicolas) Cochin after La Chapelle, show costumes against a scenic background. Modern half calf over old marbled boards, giltstamped red spine label. First edition, very rare. Georges de la Chapelle, a native of Caen, accompanied Le Haye, the French envoy to the Porte, and spent several years in the Levant, and his work is known to us almost exclusively through these engravings, showing what Thieme/Becker described as "the prettiest ladies in the Imperial Seraglio". In the introductory text included in this first edition, La Chapelle explains that the series was occasioned by a recent French edition of Chalcondyles, in which (as he complains) the depictions of female costumes were very poorly drawn. La Chapelle clearly had a special interest in female costume: "his own representations are highly detailed, with special attention paid to the fabulous jewels and fine needlework that adorn the garments of Levantine costume. (According to the preface, the accuracy of his drawings could be attested by Le Haye [.], in whose presence the drawings were executed.) To add verisimilitude to the plates, examples of Turkish, Persian, Tartar, Armenian and Greek costume are depicted against topographical backgrounds showing the areas in and around Constantinople in which the models were most likely to reside" (Atabey). Disbound stab-stitched pamphlet laid into recent marbled wrappers, printed title panel to front, title page printed within typographical border. Moderate toning, faint staining to leaves. A nice copy of a scarce title. * Only edition. The author was probably inspired by reforming spirit of the Civil War, which affected a number of jurists, most notably William Sheppard. He calls for a national survey to solicit proposals to simplify the common law: "The Lawes should be made as short and plaine as could be, without the nice words, and Tautologies, or Repetitions of Law that are now used" (5). He also proposes a number of liberalizing measures, such as the abolition of forest laws. OCLC locates 4 copies in North America (Harvard Law School, Huntington Library, Library of Congress, Law Library, Yale Law School). The ESTC adds 2 more locations (California State Library, Folger Library). English Short-Title Catalogue R201915.

(CHARLES I.) [GAUDEN, John.]
[London: no publisher,] , M.DC.XLVIII. [1648, i.e. 1649]. Small octavo (151 x 90 mm), pp. [6], 208, 107–154, 255–302, [16]. Handsomely bound in late 18th-century blue straight-grain morocco, smooth spine divided in compartments with gilt Greek-key and dotted rolls, memorial cypher of Charles I in compartments and date in gilt at foot, sides gilt with outer Greek-key roll enclosing central panel, corners filled with massed dots and fleurons, cypher of Charles I in centre, turn-ins with Greek-key roll, yellow ochre endpapers, gilt edges. Double-page engraved plate as frontispiece, engraved portrait of the Prince of Wales; text continuous despite pagination, the explanation leaf folded in at fore edge. Somewhat closely trimmed, shaving the head of the frontispiece and one or two headlines, but a fine copy in an attractive binding. Having lost both the pamphlet and the civil wars, Charles triumphed in death with the Eikon basilike, supposedly written by him but most likely ghost-written by his chaplain, John Gauden, who probably included some authentic writings of the king. First published on 9 February 1649, ten days after the king's execution, the book was hugely successful, and within a year had been published in some 50 editions in various languages. On behalf of the council of state, John Milton published his reply in October, entitled Eikonoklastes, but it had nothing like the same popular appeal. With its image of a pious ruler, the book inspired a cult of Charles as martyr and a lengthy tradition of royalist memorial bindings, such as this. Gonzalez Chaparro, Juan
1648 - Providing news of the earthquake that destroyed Santiago de Chile in the 17th century. 1648. Madrid. Diego Diaz de la Carrera. In folio (280 mm x 200 mm). 2 ff. Unbound. Spotting, lower margin cropped, affecting some words. First edition. An exceedingly rare imprint giving news of the earthquake that shook and destroyed Santiago de Chile, in May 1647, dated from Lima, 13 June, 1647, from where Gonzalez Chaparro wrote to Father Ovalle, to provide him with news of the natural disaster. Poetically, the author states that tears instead of ink, would a more suitable material to write these sad news. “Primera edición” (Medina). The imprint was translated into French, under the title “Relation de l'horrible tremblement, qui a ruyné . la florissante Cité de S. Jaques de Chile”, in the same year. Father Ovalle (1601 – 1651) was one of Chile´s most prominent historians, he author a rare relation of the Peace achieved with the Araucanian Indians, and the foremost history of Chile up the first half of the 17th century “Historia relacion del Reyno de Chile” (1646). The earthquake happened two years after the publication of Ovalle´s work, so this is probably the earliest extant report of the natural disaster, an event of great magnitude for the history of the region. Very rare, we find only 4 institutional copies, none have appeared in the market or for auction. Medina, Biblioteca hispano-chilena, 123. Palau, 105269. [Attributes: First Edition]

NECK, Jacob Cornelis van & Wybrand van WARWIJCK.
Amsterdam, Joost Hartgers, 1648.4to. Modern half red morocco, spine ribbed, a.e.g. (binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe). With large woodcut title-vignette depicting two vessels and folding engraved plate depicting 6 views. 92 pp.The journal of Van Neck and Warwijck was first published by Cornelis Claesz in Amsterdam in 1600. - The Dutch navigator Van Neck (1564-1638) was a representative of the Verre Compagny who in 1598 commanded three of the ships of the first successful Dutch trading voyage to the East Indies. The other ships were commanded by Van Warwijck and Jacob van Heemskerk. Van Neck's ships became separated from those of Warwijck and Heemskerk shortly after rounding the Cape of Good Hope. He did see them only some time after his arrival at Bantam. Loaded with cargo, four of the ships under Van Neck returned to Holland in 1599, while Warwijck continued to the Moluccas and Heemskerk to the Banda Islands. Van Neck was accompanied by Willem Jansz, the discoverer of Australia, then on his first voyage as mate of the Hollandia. Van Neck's was the most profitable of the pre-VOC voyages. (Howgego p.746). An important account of the second voyage of the Dutch to the East-Indies and first Dutch voyage to the Moluccas, which became the foundation for later Dutch control of the Moluccan spice trade. Also including a vocabulary of Javanese and Malay words. The second part contains the voyage by Sebald de Weert. He sailed with the fleet of Jacques Mahu but was separated from the fleet in the Strait of Magellan and coincidentally encountered the fleet of Olivier van Noort which wa … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rechts in beeld twee ruiters in galop. [Click Below for Full Description]

Guercino (artist); Gatti, Oliviero (engraver)
Rome: Gio. Giacomo de Rossi, 1648. Compelling seventeenth-century drawing manual, one of the earliest Italian pattern books. Opening with images of the human eye, the manual examines the anatomy of other isolated features, then turns to character studies of various ages and types in action. Especially striking are the plates of a man's back tensing as he draws a bow (15), an elaborately coiffed woman reading a book (18), and a girl lighting a candle (21). The copper engravings are by Oliviero Gatti of Bologna after designs by the young Guercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, 1591-1666), the Italian Baroque painter known for his fluid, naturalistic early style. Although the engraved title page is dated 1619, the imprint of Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi in the lower right corner indicates a mid-century date. A very good wide-margined copy of an evocative book, in a contemporary binding. Single broadsheet volume, comprising 22 numbered copper-engraved plates bound in full contemporary limp vellum. Engraved title page with dedication to the Duke of Mantua numbered 1. Contemporary ink ownership inscription to interior of front cover, slip of paper with pencil drawings after plate 2 laid in. Wear and staining to vellum, endpapers lightly foxed, front hinge reinforced. Faint tidemark to lower margin not affecting plates, stray marks indicating signs of use, though not affecting plates, with the exception of one spot to plate 14.
