BONTEKOE, Willem Ysbrantsz.
- Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 381; Tiele, Bibl. 159; Verkruijsse & Verhoeven 1648-03. One of the most compelling and entertaining travel accounts of Dutch literature, in one of the earliest and most important editions, the first to be published by Hartgers. Bontekoe details his eventful 8-year voyage to the East Indies. The vivid description of his ship accidently exploding in the Sunda Strait, killing almost a third of the crew, no doubt made a huge impression on his readers. Bontekoe returned in 1625, but his travelogue was not published until 1646. It was an immediate success and went through numerous editions. From the beginning Raven's short account of a voyage to Greenland, during which he too suffered shipwreck, was added to Bontekoe's voyage. Almost all editions of Bontekoe's narrative are rare. Jan Jansz. Deutel, who published the first edition in 1646, also published the first significantly revised edition in 1648, in part to better compete with the pirated edition with new and better illustrations by Salomon Saverij. Hartgers took the best of both, following Deutel’s revised text but Saverij’s illustrations, establishing one of the two principal branches in the lineage of editions.Trimmed close to the text, slightly shaving an occasional shoulder note, the two corners at the foot of the plate are torn off, one just touching the corner of the image, and a dark stain on 2 facing pages, but still generally in good condition. Important early edition of the vivid description of Bontekoe's voyage to the East Indies.

WILKINS (John)
London, printed by M.F. for Sa. ¶ "Much of Mathematical Magick discusses the operation of machines for raising water, such as those which Wilkins had in his garden at Wadham. In general, the book embodied the notion that the quality of human life … [Click Below for Full Description]

VAN HELMONT, Jean Baptiste
Amsterdam, Louis Elzevier, 1648. Opuscula medica inaudita. I. De lithiasi. II. De febribus. III. De humoribus Galeni. IV. De peste. Editio secunda multo emendatior. Amsterdam, Elzevier, 1648. Printing and the Mind of Man 135 : "Helmont, who was himself an alchemist, marks the transition from alchemy to chemistry in the modern sense, and it is not surprising to find that he was much studied by Robert Boyle who adopted many of his ideas. Helmont therefore stands at the very beginning of the chemical revolution which was completed by Lavoisier in the eighteen century." (. "Helmont was one of the founders of biochemistry. BETTINI, Mario. [BETTINUS, Marius].
First edition Bologna: G.B. Ferroni, 1648. An outstanding copy of this rare compendious scholastic mathematical work by the Jesuit mathematician Mario Bettini (1582-1657), encompassing all the major fields of mathematics, but paying special attention to geometry. Bettini's Aerarium covers a wealth of information not just in mathematics but also astronomical geometry, all of which had, as with Bettini's previous Apiaria of 1645, gone through the Collegio Romano's rigorous censorship under the eye of Christoph Grienberger (d.1636), who as Clavius' successor was responsible for enforcing adherence to Aristotle in matters of natural philosophy. European scientific thought during the period 1620-1660 was dominated by the revolutionary investigations of Galileo and others into the nature of the solar system. The Jesuits, as the chief proponents of traditional Aristotelian teachings, were hailed by many as the intellectual champions of the Catholic Church, the philosophical mathematical and Scriptural arguments of Jesuit writers against the Copernican theory of a sun-centered solar system the main driving forces of seventeenth century inquiry. At the beginning of the seventeenth century to understand meant to grasp regularities, and this knowledge was based largely on the accepted authority of ancient texts. However as the worldview expanded the certainty of such views began to diminish. For the philosophically well-educated mathematics appeared as one of the few refuges of eternal truths untainted by the possibility of such dissent. Jesuit colleges, such as that at Parma wher … [Click Below for Full Description]

Waller 12004. Sotheran 6440. Starp, Schoenwetter 195 (in AGB I). Bruening 987. Warner, Sky Explored, 41, 2 b. Norman 321: "Despite its title, this work contains only Brahe's 'Protogymnasmata' (1602) and 'De mundi aetheri' (1588), the first two volumes of a never-completed trilogy. The first is a scholarly work on the 1572 supernova in Cassiopeia, containing Tycho's observations of the supernova, revisions of the theories of solar and lunar motion, and a catalogue of the positions of 777 fixed stars. The second work records Tycho's observations of the great comet of 1577, and includes a description of his geoheliocentric theory of the universe. Tycho's observations of the supernova and comet led him to abandon the Ptolemaic concept of heavenly spheres and to deny the Aristotelian hypothesis that nothing new could be born in the heavens" Very Good.

HARVEY, William.
Rotterdam: Arnold Leers, 1648. First edition of the Exercitationes, one of two issues published simultaneously (see below), of this rare and important work, a defence of his theory of the circulation of the blood against the Parisian physician Jean Riolan the younger. It is here bound after the first Rotterdam edition of De motu cordis itself, an important edition in its own right, as it contains a corrected text, with the preface by Zacharias Sylvius (1608-1664); it also contains the first edition of the substantial treatise by James de Back (1593-1657), Dissertatio de corde ... Annexa Appendix pro circulatione Harveiana. Keynes called the Exercitationes "one of [Harvey's] major contributions to medical science" (Life, p. 327). They were appended to later editions of De motu, as here; as Keynes says in his Bibliography of William Harvey, "The two treatises have for too long been considered merely an appendix to De motu - they are far more important than this." The only copy of the Exercitationes auctioned in the last forty years was the Haskell F. Norman copy, also bound with the Rotterdam edition of De motu (Christie's, June 1998, $9200, re-sold at Sotheby's PMM sale, October 1999, £6900). ?Norman 1007 & 1010. De motu cordis, first published in 1628, "is probably the most important book in the history of medicine. What Vesalius was to anatomy, Harvey was to physiology; the whole scientific outlook on the human body was transformed, and behind almost every important medical advance in modern times lies the work of Harvey" (Heirs of Hippocrates). Sir Thomas Overbury ['Coppied by Sir Tho: Overbvry']
At the Sun over against St Dunstan's Church in Fleetstreet: Printed by William Wilson, for Abel Roper, 1648 A fair copy of an extremely scarce work. Thomas Overbury (1581-1613) is best known for the scandal surrounding his death by poisoning in the Tower, and the trial that followed it some 2 years later. He studied Law in 1598, was knighted in 1608 and was known as a writer and poet. His account of the arraignment and trial of Raleigh is assumed to be written as an eye-witness. Raleigh was tried in 1603 and convicted of treason. His sentence of death was commuted to imprisonment and he was later briefly released, before being imprisoned and retried in 1618. This trial reinstated his death sentence, albeit by less gruesome means. The book contains Overbury's account of the first trial; an account of the second trial (no author named); and Raleigh's letters to the King and to his wife before his death. The binding is more recent full panelled calf with title label to spine, matching a contemporary design. There is a bookplate of Col William Allen Potter to the front pastedown. Col Potter was a High Sherriff of Nottinghamshire and President of the Thoroton Society. Newer endpapers and 2 initial and final blanks have been added. Contents: title page; blank, text with decorative headpiece and initial capital pp 1-25; proceedings against Sir Walter R 1618 pp 26-34; Letter to the King pp 35/6; Letter to his Wife 37/8; Finis. The binding is in fine condition. The contents are fragile: the paper is very browned at points and the side margins have been reinforced, probably when the … [Click Below for Full Description]

First Collected Edition of what PMM describes at "the transition from Alchemy to Chemistry." It was written by "one of the founders of biochemistry. [Helmont] was the first to realize the physiological importance of ferments and gases, and indeed invented the word 'gas'" (Garrison-Morton). "Although [Helmont] was inclined to mysticism, he nevertheless became a remarkable scientific investigator and made significant contributions to the progress of chemistry and medicine. He believed that the processes in diseased organs are of a chemical nature, due in each case to the action of a specific ferment, and he gave a new impetus to the application of chemical remedies to diseases. [.] Helmont's significance in the development of chemistry is perhaps even greater [than his contributions to medicine]; he was the first to … [Click Below for Full Description]
