Sanson, Nicolas
Paris, 1648. unbound. Map. Engraving with hand outline color. Image measures 14.5 x 21.5 inches. This map of Switzerland centers on Lucerne, covering approximately the area from Lake Constance south to Lake Como in Italy. Published in 1648, the map dates to the period of the Old Swiss Confederacy. Furthermore, it predates by only a few years the Swiss Peasant War of 1653, a siege of Lucerne and Bern that demonstrated the significance of the rural population to the confederacy%u2019s stability. Hand-colored outlines on the map indicate the various independent states that made up the confederacy. A title cartouche with elaborate scrollwork adorns the lower right corner of the map. The map is in good condition with full margins and no chips or tears. Wear to lower margin. Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667) is considered the founder of the French school of cartography. In reaction to the prevailing trend of Dutch lavishness, Sanson favored minimal details, focusing rather on accurate cartography than ornament. This map demonstrates the skill that made him such a valuable asset to the French monarchy.

Apulée Ensemble] Commentaires sur la Metamorphose de l'Asne d'or de L. Apulée Chez Nicolas & Jean de La Coste, à Paris 1648, Fort in-8 (10,5x17,2cm), (16) 382pp. ; (2) 270pp. *** [English translation available upon request. PINCIO, Giano Pirro.
Carlo Zanetti, Trento, 1648. [16], 399, [5] p., [1] ritr. incis., 2° (30 cm), perg. Carattere romano e corsivo. BLAEU, Jan
Amsterdam:, 1648. Anglia. Lancaster et Lancas Shire. Size: 510 x 400 mm. Copper engraving. Original colour. Fine condition; very slight offsetting. A fine and highly decorative map of Lancashire by the famous Dutch cartographer Blaeu. This English county map with figurative title cartouche is ornate with heraldic family coats of arms and a cherub. The map is very detailed and gives many place names, smaller villages or settlements. Rivers, lakes, mountains and woods are also indicated. Jan Blaeu (1596-1673) was a son of a famous Dutch cartographer, Willem Janzoon Blaeu, and he shared his father's passion and continued his work. His Atlas Novus is one of the most extraordinary work within this category ever produced. It is known for its exquisite engraving, calligraphy and colouring as well as heraldic detail, pictorial work and the intricate cartouches, which all amounted to the appeal of this work. In fact it is argued that some of the maps produced by Jan were considered to be the finest published anywhere in the seventeenth century. This map is from the Dutch edition of this work.

Rechts in beeld twee ruiters in galop. [Click Below for Full Description]

BONTEKOE, Willem Ysbrantsz.
- Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 381; Tiele, Bibl. 159; Verkruijsse & Verhoeven 1648-03. One of the most compelling and entertaining travel accounts of Dutch literature, in one of the earliest and most important editions, the first to be published by Hartgers. Bontekoe details his eventful 8-year voyage to the East Indies. The vivid description of his ship accidently exploding in the Sunda Strait, killing almost a third of the crew, no doubt made a huge impression on his readers. Bontekoe returned in 1625, but his travelogue was not published until 1646. It was an immediate success and went through numerous editions. From the beginning Raven's short account of a voyage to Greenland, during which he too suffered shipwreck, was added to Bontekoe's voyage. Almost all editions of Bontekoe's narrative are rare. Jan Jansz. Deutel, who published the first edition in 1646, also published the first significantly revised edition in 1648, in part to better compete with the pirated edition with new and better illustrations by Salomon Saverij. Hartgers took the best of both, following Deutel’s revised text but Saverij’s illustrations, establishing one of the two principal branches in the lineage of editions.Trimmed close to the text, slightly shaving an occasional shoulder note, the two corners at the foot of the plate are torn off, one just touching the corner of the image, and a dark stain on 2 facing pages, but still generally in good condition. Important early edition of the vivid description of Bontekoe's voyage to the East Indies.

WILKINS (John)
London, printed by M.F. for Sa. ¶ "Much of Mathematical Magick discusses the operation of machines for raising water, such as those which Wilkins had in his garden at Wadham. In general, the book embodied the notion that the quality of human life … [Click Below for Full Description]
