ROBERTS, A.
Cox I, p. 362; Playfair, Algeria 155; Playfair, Morocco 244; Wing S152. First edition of an extraordinary account of an English merchant mariner's capture by Barbary pirates in or soon after 1648 and his subsequent adventures as a slave in Algeria. It is presented as an authentic journal of T[homas?] S[mith?], posthumously prepared for the press by his friend A. Roberts. The author is certainly well-informed on the Ottomans in Africa and his story may be partly based on true events, but many of the details are clearly fantasy, with monstrous beasts and people turned to stone, in addition to tall tales of his own adventures. In the story he sets off from the Thames in the Hamburg merchant ship Sancta Maria in July 1648 and the ship is captured by Barbary pirates soon after. As a slave under numerous masters the author tricks his way into employment as cook to the King of Algiers, is then demoted to keeper of the King's bath and secretly fathers a daughter with one of the King's wives. After an unsuccessful stint as a gardener's assistant he journeys in the service of an Ottoman officer, collecting tribute money with the Algerian army, and offers his services as an advisor to the Ottoman governor of Tlemcen (northwest Algeria). With an owner's initials, manuscript bookplates and library stamps. In good condition, very slightly browned and with a small chip at the head of two leaves, affecting only the page numbers. [DUYFKEN] SPILBERGEN, Joris van
Amsterdam: Joost Hartgers, 1648. Small quarto, woodcut on title and double-page engraved plate with six vignette illustrations; very faint staining to top corner of some 20 leaves; an excellent copy in contemporary half vellum. Very rare: this Amsterdam printing of two Dutch East Indies Company voyage accounts includes one of remarkably few surviving printed records of Willem Jansz and the Duyfken. This is the fifth edition of this account of Joris van Spilbergen's voyage, first published in 1604. This is, however, the first edition to contain the important supplementary account of the Van der Hagen voyage (see below), which was also the first stage of the Duyfken voyage. It is the only separately published edition of any account of the Van der Hagen voyage - and thus the only separately published record of the voyage that would culminate in the first authenticated sighting of the coast of Australia. The first part of the book deals with Joris van Spilbergen's voyage to Sri Lanka, which was sent out by a group of Zealand merchants in 1601 and successfully established the first trading link between Sri Lanka and the Netherlands. His fleet of three ships visited the Cape of Good Hope and then sailed directly to Sri Lanka, where Spilbergen negotiated with the king of Kandy, promising military assistance against the Portuguese. The narrative of the voyage includes a record of daily events and considerable material on life and customs in Sri Lanka. Earlier editions of Spilbergen's account appeared in Delft in 1604 (several issues) and 1605, and in Amsterdam in 1617. The text also … [Click Below for Full Description]

GROENVELT, Joannes (John GREENFIELD or GROENVELD).
Blake, p. 187; ESTC T64914; for the author: Cook, "Groenevelt, Joannes (bap. 1648, d. 1715/16)", in: ODNB (online ed.). First English edition of a treatise on the medicinal use of Spanish fly (Lytta vesicatoria, traditionally classified in the family Canthardiae). Joannes Groenevelt (1648-1715/16)) was a Dutch-born physician, practising in London from 1675 on. Spanish fly was known for centuries as an aphrodisiac, but was also extremely dangerous, overdoses sometimes causing death. Greenfield, as he called himself in England, strongly advocated the use of Spanish fly, primarily for the treatment of gout and of bladder and kidney diseases. One of his patients accused him of malpractice and Groenvelt was fined and sent to Newgate prison, but obtained permanent freedom through William III's general pardon in 1691. He published the present treatise on the use of Spanish fly as a vindication of his methods. It includes a laudatory poem by Bernard Mandeville, detailed descriptions of the various medicinal uses of Spanish fly, followed by medical observations and several recipes. Typaldos, Meletios (1648-1713)

FRENCH EMBROIDERED BINDING
Paris: Sebastien Feugé, 1648. 12mo (binding size 143 x 82 mm). 2 parts, separately titled and paginated, 262, [2]; 239, [1] pp. Woodcut title vignettes. A few corners creased. Contemporary French embroidered binding of ivory silk over pasteboards, each cover with a different floral design of flowering plants, buds, fruits and leaves, in variously colored threads, a few tendrils and sequins scattered in the background, within a border of braided metallic ribbon, edges of boards with additional border of striated silver thread, spine with design of Monogram of the Virgin, instruments of the Passion, and the Sacred Heart, gilt edges, liners of striated pink, white and blue satin, two flyleaves at front and back, two pairs of fore-edge catches, lacking clasps, loss to outer thread borders and to most of the embroidery on the backstrip, a few sequins bent, but overall well preserved. Provenance: Dr. Lucien-Graux, bookplate.*** a superb mid-seventeenth-century parisian embroidered binding on a popular devotional work. French embroidered bindings from this period survive in smaller numbers and appear much more rarely in the rare book trade than their English counterparts. This beautiful example features large naturalistic flowers, although blossoms from several species sprout from the same stem, including daisies (marguerites), carnations, lilies, a bluebell, a pansy, a gooseberry, a strawberry, and thistle flowers. The highly skilled embroiderer layered in and cross-stitched differently colored threads to create shading and blush on leaves and blossoms. The marvelous silk liner … [Click Below for Full Description]

Frans Baltensz
Dordrecht: Frans Baltensz., 1648. 8vo (15,2 x 9,6 cm). 51; 315 pp. 18th-century calf. Gilt spine. Gilt board edges. Curious and rare edition of these almost incomprehensible commentaries on the Gospels of St. John done deliberately by the zealotic Anabaptist Frans Baltensz, a printer in Dordrecht. This work of which Knipscheer in his biographical article in the NNBW says that it is ''as famous for its unintelligibility, as it is sought-after for its rarity'', was already forbidden before it was printed. The author is told to have cut his manuscript apart to pieces and afterwards to have put the pieces on his printing press. Covers with a few unobtrusive and small restored spots. Fine copy.
[Attributes: Hard Cover]
