[ Wingate, E ]
London: Miles Flesher, 1648. Third [ Second ] English Ed.. full contemp. calf.. A very good copy; rebacked at some time in the 20th century; good margins throughout.. 12mo. There are text illus.. [ 8 ], 135, [ 1 ], [ 156 ], [ 38 ] pp.. Wingate's early and rare tract on logarithms bound with his table and a supplement by Cuslon for navigational observations to determine distance in latitude from port of departure. The tract is identified as being the third edtion, fully corrected by the author. Copies located all appear to lack the table (except the copy at MU) present here. The table , first printed with a French title and prelims. because of Wingate's residence in that country, is noted as being rare by Henderson. It was originally published in 1625; re-issued in 1626 with the table enlarged by the addition of sines and tangents and then in English the same year. A corrected edition was issued in English in 1635. It is this corrected table with an English fly title dated 1635 and no printer identified that is bound in here. It appears to have been re-set and corrected once again given the variant signing of the first two signatures of this copy when compared with the on line record of the BL and the fact that the errata of the orig. 1635 is not present. One assumes there would have been more errors located and the original identified errors corrected requiring some re-setting of type. The tract and table are bound with an additional set of tables entitled ' Certain Useful Tables ....' This is cited in Wing (`72) as a separate title entry (but without entry number) but is … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bible - Dutch. Lutheran. 1648.
Gedruckt by Rieuwert Dircksz van Baardt, t'Amsterdam: 1648. ff. (19), 278, 112, 70, 132 leaves. Engraved pictorial title page and tailpiece, and five historiated double-page folding maps and city views (by Savary). Woodcut tailpieces, large and small decorative and historiated initials. Light marginal worming in preliminaries. Map of Paradise with wear at the margins. Engraved title mounted. Printed titles for the Prophets and New Testament. Folio. Contemporary full leather binding over split oak boards. Corners and clasp holders in thick brass. Spine and joints deteriorated; boards detached. Still impressive, and priced to allow for proper restoration. Engraved bookplate of R. Percy Alden, drawn by the American artist J. Alden Weir. This is the famous Dutch Lutheran Bible of 1648. This important Dutch Bible of was based on the Low German Bible printed at Madeburg in 1554, which was translated by J. Bugenhagen from Luther's Bible of 1545. It was published for the use of his brother Mennonites in 1560 by N. Biestkens van Diest in Emden, and became famous as the Biestkens Bible. Darlow and Moule 'Historical Catalogue of the Printed Editions of the Holy Scripture' No. 3311 says that this edition is "A revision of the 'Biestkens Bible' prepared on the basis of Luther's by Adolf Visscher of the Lutheran Church at Amsterdam. This became the standard Bible of the Dutch Lutherans." It is curious to note that it is the only Dutch Bible ever published by van Baardt. Darlow & Moule 3311. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! Scarce. W108

HARVEY, William.
Rotterdam: Arnold Leers, 1648. First edition. Hardcover. First edition of the <i>Exercitationes</i>, one of two issues published simultaneously (see below), of this rare and important work, a defence of his theory of the circulation of the blood against the Parisian physician Jean Riolan the younger. It is here bound after the first Rotterdam edition of <i>De motu cordis</i> itself, an important edition in its own right, as it contains a corrected text, with the preface by Zacharias Sylvius (1608-1664); it also contains the first edition of the substantial treatise by James de Back (1593-1657), <i>Dissertatio de corde ... Annexa Appendix pro circulatione Harveiana</i>. Keynes called the <i>Exercitationes</i> “one of [Harvey's] major contributions to medical science” (<i>Life</i>, p. 327). They were appended to later editions of <i>De motu</i>, as here; as Keynes says in his <i>Bibliography of William Harvey</i>, “The two treatises have for too long been considered merely an appendix to <i>De motu</i> – they are far more important than this.” The only copy of the <i>Exercitationes</i> auctioned in the last forty years was the Haskell F. Norman copy, also bound with the Rotterdam edition of <i>De motu</i> (Christie's, June 1998, $9200, re-sold at Sotheby's PMM sale, October 1999, 6900). ❧Norman 1007 & 1010.<br/><br/> <i>De motu cordis</i>, first published in 1628, “is probably the most important book in the history of medicine. What Vesalius was to anatomy, Harvey was to physiology; the whole scientific outlook on the human body was transformed, and behind almost every im … [Click Below for Full Description]

BACON, Francis
Lvg. Batavor : Apud Franciscum Hackium, 1648. First edition. - 1648 1st ed Francis Bacon Sylva Sylvarum New Atlantis Philosophy Opium Healing “Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly.” Francis Bacon Francis Bacon, one of the most famous English philosophers and scientists of the Renaissance. While most of his work deals with discovery, scientific method, and the scientific revolution, he did lean strongly toward Puritanism in his personal devotion. This book ‘Sylva Sylvarum’ with ‘Novus Atlas’ is a famous set of philosophical treatises covering topics such as medical treatments for prolonged life and preservation of youth by using opium! Bacon wrote this book as a collection of miscellaneous topics – others include ancient wisdom and secrets. This Latin translation was edited by Jacob Gruter and includes a preface by William Rawley. Rawley, Bacon’s secretary, decided to add the unfinished but fascinating ‘New Atlantis’ to the end of this printing of ‘Sylva’. In 1648, both Elzevier and Hackiana published examples of this work; however, Hackiana decided to re-engrave the illustrated title page. Item number: #1228 Price: $599 BACON, Francis Fr. BEAUMONT, Joseph.
London, Printed by John Dawson for George Boddington 1648. - Small folio, pp. [6], 399, [1], wanting the preliminary blank, small hole to M4 affecting three letters, a few marginal repairs without loss; a very good copy in full red morocco, gilt, by Zaehnsdorf, joints slightly rubbed.First edition. Beaumont was one of the royalist fellows ejected from Cambridge in 1644, and he devoted his enforced retirement to the composition of this poem, a 'religious epic' representing 'a Soule led by divine Grace, and her Guardian Angel . through the difficult Temptations and Assaults of Lust, of Pride, of Heresie, of Persecution, and of Spiritual Dereliction . to heavenly Felicitie.' The result, some 30,000 lines in six-line stanzas, is by far the longest work of the 'English Spenserians' of the seventeenth century (Drayton, Wither, Henry More, Giles and Phineas Fletcher), although Beaumont's stylistic affinities lie more with Donne and with his fellow student at Peterhouse, Richard Crashaw. When a second edition was published in 1702 'much enlarged in every canto by the late Reverend Author', the first edition was described as 'very scarce and very dear', which is difficult to believe.Wing B 1625; Hayward 96. [Charles I, King of England 1600 - 1649]. [Gauden, John]
[London], 1648. Early edition (Madan 21; Almack 15; Wing E-270). Full red morocco leather binding (18th C?) with elaborate gilt decorative stamping to front & rear boards; raised spine bands; gilt stamped title in second compartment & gilt stamped decorations in the remainder. AEG. Gilt dentelles. Marbled eps. Binding with minor signs of use & wear. Recent bookseller notes to preliminary blank, with modern London bookseller ticket to front blank. Frontis is a touch grubby and shows a tiny bit of edge chipping. Title leaf floated, with period signatures of Robert Bridge and Joseph MacIntyre. H2 with small hole along gutter. Pale staining to margins (heavier to first half of the volume). Tiny worm run to edge of first couple of leaves, and some tiny runs to margins in places. Scattered pale marginal foxing. Withal, a handsome VG+ copy of this title.. [4], 302, [16] pp. Numerous mispaginations throughout. Double-page engraved frontispiece by William Marshall, "designed for this edition". [Madan]. 8vo: A - U^8 (D1 mis-signed as E1) ^4 (a)^4. 6-1/4" x 3-13/16" (16 cm x 9.7 cm). A lovely copy of this famous Royalist publication, purporting to be the memoirs of the recently executed King. So controversial was it that Parliament commissioned an answer with John Milton's Eikonoklastes. Milton was the first to cast doubt on its authorship, and Madan's New Bibliography of the Eikon Basilike demonstrated that while Dr. John Gauden was the author, he worked closely from Charles' manuscripts.

WILKINS (John)

¶ "Much of Mathematical Magick discusses the operation of machines for raising water, such as those which Wilkins had in his garden at Wadham. In general, the book embodied the not … [Click Below for Full Description]
