[Click Below for Full Description]

BROWNE, Thomas.
London: Printed by T.H. For Edward Dod, and are to be sold in Ivie Lane, 1646. FIRST EDITION. Large octavo, pp. 386. In contemporary full speckled calf, gilt decoration to spine, marbled end papers.Bookplate with Latin motto attached to pastedown. Minute early, professional, near-invisible repairs to the "Envoi". Boards scuffed, hinges starting, spine and corners repaired, foxing to some leaves, heavier in places. A respectable copy. Sir Thomas Browne delighted in the discussion of fables, and painstakingly applied himself to the discovery of the truth behind them, and the more marvellous the story, the more he enjoyed the investigation of it. His fame for encyclopedic knowledge was firmly established during his lifetime, and his assistance was frequently sought on scientific or antiquarian inquiries. He was one of few men of his era to have read Dante's 'Inferno,' which was also a source of inspiration to him. Although he professed his anxiety to dispel popular superstitions, he believed in astrology, alchemy, witchcraft, and magic, and the Ptolemaic system of astronomy. An unfortunate practical illustration of his credulity occured in 1664, when Amy Duny and Rose Cullender were being tried as witches. Browne declared 'that the fits were natural, but heightened by the devils cooperating with the malice of the witches, at whose instance he did the villainies,' and he cited some recent similar cases in Denmark. It has been suggested that this comment directly led to a conviction of witchcraft for both women. Keynes [73].

2100 gr. KIRCHER, Athanasius.
Rome: Sumptibus Hermanni Scheus, ex typographia Ludovici Grignani, 1646. First edition. First edition of Kircher's principal contribution to optics, treating light, shadow, colour, refraction, projection, distortion and luminescence, and providing early descriptions of the camera obscura and magic lantern. The work also includes some of the earliest observations with a microscope, preceding those of Hooke and van Leeuwenhoek by two decades. "The first published account of the illumination and projection of images appeared in the first edition of Athanasius Kircher's Ars magna lucis et umbrae (1646)" (Bud & Warner, p. 365). "The use of mirrors to project secret messages into dark spaces was taken up in the seventeenth century by Athanasius Kircher, who, though he ridiculed the extravagant claims of Agrippa, described methods for projecting texts using both sunlight and candles, with the aid of both flat and concave mirrors, and a convex lens. Kircher described this art as "Catoptric Steganography", and if we are to believe that the magic lantern anticipated the slide-show, Kircher's Catoptric Steganography was the early modern version of the Powerpoint presentation" (Lefèvre, p. 44). "Kircher's theory of colour was at root Aristotelian and Aguilonian in type ... Kircher has amplified the Aguilonian scheme by introducing the mixtures of the 'median colours' with black and white, but the basic pattern is identical, relying upon the white and black poles between which come yellow, red and blue together with the three 'composites', orange, green and purple ... Kircher had come t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sir John Suckling 1609-1642
- London: Printed for Humphrey Moseley, and are to be sold at his shop, at the Signe of the Princes Armes in St Pauls Churchyard, 1646 Octavo 7 x 4.75 inches A4, A6, B-G8, H4. First edition. This is a very large copy, with many deckle edges throughout. The leaves are large and clean, with a crisp type impression. They have not been washed or pressed. It is bound in comenmporary full calf, housed ia a custom made solander case. This copy has the words ÔFragmenta AureaÕ with the ÔFÕ and ÔAÕ capitalized, the rest in small letters. Some copies of the first edition have ÔFragmenta AureaÕ in all caps. This volume is divided into four parts, each with a separate title-page and pagination. The first contains a medley of poems and songs, a number of letters, and an essay on religion; the other three are plays, "Aglaura," "The Goblins," and "The Tragedy of Brennoralt." At his best, Suckling writes with considerable charm; the song which begins, "Why so pale and wan fond lover" has a permanent place in the language of courtship. There is also a short "supplement" to Shakespeare"s Lucrece. ÒSir John Suckling, a Cavalier poet, SucklingÕs short life was so crowded with activity that the amount of his literary output is remarkable. The son of an old Norfolk family, he seems to have taken his education none too seriously: he left Cambridge without graduating and spent a year at GrayÕs Inn. His father died when Suckling was 18, and this gave him freedom to seek what adventures he pleased. He was a member of the expedition to the Ile de Re (1627), was in the Netherlands (1629-30), and served … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
