Giovanni Battista Ferrari and Cornelis Bloemart
A splendidly detailed hand-colored copperplate engraving by Giovanni Battista Ferrari (1582-1655) and Cornelis Bloemart (1603-1684) from their spectacular book “Hesperides sive de Malorum Aureorum Culrura et Usu Libri Quatuor”. This book was published in Rome by Herman Scheus in 1646. Overall this print measures 9.5” x 13.5”. These bold studies of citrus fruits, each tied with ribbons labeled with their specimen names, were part of this first book devoted to citrus fruit. The specimens, and information included in this book such as classification, origin and locations, methods of cultivation, and medical uses of citrus fruits, was compiled by the Italian Jesuit scholar and professor Giovanni Battista Ferrari. The sumptuous illustrations of the fruit were by Dutch printmaker Cornelius Bloemart, whom was from a family of Dutch artists and was known as a great botanical artist. This series includes 110 plates of depictions of mainly life-size fruits, whole and in section, as well as foliage and flowers, along with a few cultivation and allegorical scenes. Overall this print is in good condition with some foxing, staining, creasing and a few small tears in margins.

NECK, Jacob Cornelis van & Wybrand van WARWIJCK.
(Amsterdam, Joannes Janssonius, 1646).Oblong 8vo. Modern wrappers. With 26 engraved plates. 56 pp. (text set in two columns).Extracted from Commelin's collection of voyages. - The first successful Dutch trading voyage to the East Indies. The fleet sent out from Amsterdam by the successor of the company that financed De Houtman's venture, now called the Old East India Company, was a smashing success. Eight ships commanded by Jacob van Neck and Wybrand van Warwijck left Texel on May 1, 1598. Fifteen month later, on July 17, Van Neck returned from Bantam with four of his ships fully laden with pepper. The rest of the fleet, under Van Warwijck and Jacob van Heemskerck, made other stops on Java and then went to Banda, Amboina, and the Moluccas; here they established the three factories which became the foundation for later Dutch controle of the Moluccan spice trade. Van Heemskerck arrived in Amsterdam with two ships on May 19, 1600; Van Warwijck arrived with the remaining two ships at the end of August, 1600. The major contributions made by this account were full descriptions of Banda, Amboina, and the Moluccas. Appended is a Malay-Javanese-Dutch word list (Lach & Van Kley, Asia in the making of Europe III,1, p.439-440).Landwehr VOC, 250. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

WITCHCRAFT). DAVENPORT, JOHN
London: Printed by W. Wilson for R. Clutterbuck, 1646. FIRST EDITION. This is a very scarce collection of confessions and testimony given during the East Anglia Witch Hunt of 1644-47, during which self-appointed "Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins tried and hanged approximately 300 people, mostly women--more than had been executed for witchcraft in the previous 100 years. The 14 interviews recorded here contain both confessions of accused witches and testimony of witnesses against them, all taken down between 31 March and 2 May 1646; the Huntingdon witches were executed in May. The proceedings were recorded first-hand by John Davenport, an employee of Justice of the Peace Sir Robert Bernard, one of the magistrates who presided over the trials. It is interesting that at the end of this work, Davenport recommends "Select Cases of Conscience touching Witches and Witchcrafts," the work of Hopkins' most vociferous opponent, John Gaule, vicar of Great Staughton, whose denunciation of Hopkins' dubious methods helped bring the witch-hunts to an end. This is quite a rare work, with ESTC and OCLC finding just five copies in the UK and five in the US. RBH and ABPC list just one other copy at auction, sold at Sotheby's in 1930, and its (brief) description suggests that it may, in fact, be the present one.. 190 x 140 mm. (7 3/8 x 5 1/2"). 2 p.l., 15 pp. FIRST EDITION. The Volume is in Excellent Condition, bound in full blind-ruled English calf, contemporary to the time of publication, with the spine divided into six compartments by five raised bands, with the board edges gilt and leaf edges red speckled. This was a valuable source of information which found itself upon the shelves of many homes in seventeenth century England, being in the vanguard of the scientific writing, and it paved the way for much subsequent popular scientific journalism. Its science includes many examples of Browne's 'at-first-hand' empiricism as well as early examples of the formulation of scientific hypothesis. The work includes evidence of Browne's adherence to the Baconian method of empirical observation of nature, and was in the vanguard of work-in-progress scientific journalism during the 17th-century scientific revolution. Throughout its pages frequent examples of Browne's subtle humour can also be found. It first appeared in 1646 and went through five subsequent editions … [Click Below for Full Description]

VAN ESPEN, Zeger Bernard.
, . . Dekkers, Bibl. Belg. juridica, p. 52, no. 16. Third edition of the collected works of the Belgian canonist Zeger Bernard Van Espen (1646-1728). He was a lucid and clarifying expositor of the discipline of the ancient Church, which led to a certain fame at the end of the 17th century. Because of his involvement with Jansenist and Gallican doctrine Van Espen fled to Maastricht and his Jus ecclesiasticum universum was put on the Index in 1704.
Incisione su rame, in ottime condizioni. Rare plan of Porto Longone, also known as Porto Azzurro, on the Island of Elba. Published in Les Glorieuses Conquestes de Louis le Grand - one of the most important works in the 17th century. Shows the bay and the surrounding area in great detail, with mountains, rivers, cliffs, and woods. The battle plan shows the forts, camps and tents, and sailing war ships. Two extensive keys explain the camp and the fortress. With a small inset map showing the entire island and the near Italian mainland coast with the city of Piombino. Copper engraving, in very good condition.
