HOUTMAN, Cornelis de.
(Amsterdam, Joannes Janssonius, 1646).Oblong 8vo. Modern sprinkled boards. With 49 engraved plates. 112 pp. (text set in two columns).Extracted from Commelin's collection of voyages. - A group of Amsterdam merchants was responsible for the venture of the first Dutch voyage to the East in 1595. The four small ships sailed via the Cape of Good Hope to Bantam, a large trading centre on the west coast of Java. Three of the four ships finally returned to Amsterdam. 'Despite the loss of many men and one of the ships, troubles with both Javans and Portuguese, and profits barely large enough to cover expenses, the return of De Houtman's fleet set of a flurry of activity among Dutch entrepreneurs. In 1598, the year after its return, no fewer than twenty-five ships were sent out by merchants of the provinces of Holland and Zeeland alone' (Lach & Van Kley, Asia in the making, III,1, p.439). This voyage provided European readers with the most detailed description of Java to date and with the first continuous description of Bali in any language. At the Cape they landed and encountered a party of Hottentots. - (Part of plate 17 (market scene) missing; some plates cut slightly short). - Rare early edition of the 'First Fleet'.Landwehr, VOC, 251; Tiele 512; Tiele, Mémoire, 120; Cat. L'HERMITE, Jacques.
(Amsterdam, Joannes Janssonius, 1646).Oblong 8vo. Modern wrappers. With 5 engraved maps and plates. 79 pp. (text set in two columns). Extracted from Commelin's collection of voyages. - The first official account of the circumnavigation was published in 1626. This punitive fleet of eleven ships set sail to the coasts of South America with the objective of clearing the westward route to the Pacific of Spanish and Portuguese shipping. The fleet was outfitted under the auspices of the Dutch gouvernment, the two major companies, the Dutch East India Company and Dutch West India Company, having little interest in the Pacific (Howgego p.615). L'Hermite attacked Lima, burned a Spanish fleet at Callao, and went as far as north as Acapulco. It was one of the most spectacular raids against Spanish shipping. With important appendix: Description of Peru and Chile by Pedro de Madriga; Pedro Fernandez de Quir's voyage to Australia; and the history of the Dutch conquest of Banda. With maps of Teirra del Fuego, Callao de Lima (2), Puna and Acapulco.Landwehr, VOC, 250; European Americana II, p.453. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

VERHOEFF, Pieter Willemsz.
(Amsterdam, Joannes Janssonius, 1646).Oblong 8vo. Modern wrappers. With plate depicting the fortress on Banda. 214 pp. (text set in two columns).Extracted from Commelin's collection of voyages. - Pieter Willemszoon Verhoeff commanded one of the last voyages of the first phase of Dutch occupation in the East Indies. His instructions, in addition to destroying as much Iberian shipping as possible, were to drive the Spanish and Portuguese out of the Moluccas (Howgego p. 1065-1066). This account of Verhoeff's voyages is a composite piece. It starts with the journal by the chief merchant Johan de Moelre and continued, after he was killed, by the fleet's treasurer Jacques Le Febure. Followed by extracts from the journal of Reynier Dirckszoon, the pilot aboard one of the ships which sailed to Japan, and the journal of Jacob Specx and Pieter Segerszoon also on Japan. This piece is followed by a report by Samuel Bloemaert about trade and negotiations on Borneo and Appolonius Schotte's accounts of the Moluccas and Gillis Seys report of 1627 on Amboina. These materials constitute a rich source of information about the expansion of Dutch power in the Moluccas, the negatiations with the inlanders, the war with the Spaniards, the details of trade, and the daily life of the Dutch stationed there. This account of Verhoeff's voyage was never separately reprinted during the 17th century. (Lach & Van Kley, III, p.471-472). Landwehr, VOC, 250. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

ORDINE MAURIZIANO.

KIRCHER, Athanasius
Sumptibus Hermanni Scheus, ex typographia Ludovici Grignani, Rome, 1646. First edition of Kircher's principal contribution to optics, treating light, shadow, colour, refraction, projection, distortion and luminescence, and providing early descriptions of the camera obscura and magic lantern. The work also includes some of the earliest observations with a microscope, preceding those of Hooke and van Leeuwenhoek by two decades. "The first published account of the illumination and projection of images appeared in the first edition of Athanasius Kircher's Ars magna lucis et umbrae (1646)" (Bud & Warner, p. 365). "The use of mirrors to project secret messages into dark spaces was taken up in the seventeenth century by Athanasius Kircher, who, though he ridiculed the extravagant claims of Agrippa, described methods for projecting texts using both sunlight and candles, with the aid of both flat and concave mirrors, and a convex lens. Kircher described this art as "Catoptric Steganography", and if we are to believe that the magic lantern anticipated the slide-show, Kircher's Catoptric Steganography was the early modern version of the Powerpoint presentation" (Lefèvre, p. 44). "Kircher's theory of colour was at root Aristotelian and Aguilonian in type . Kircher has amplified the Aguilonian scheme by introducing the mixtures of the 'median colours' with black and white, but the basic pattern is identical, relying upon the white and black poles between which come yellow, red and blue together with the three 'composites', orange, green and purple . Kircher had come tantalisingly close … [Click Below for Full Description]

PISANI, Giovanni Battista
Lodovico Monza, Milano, 1646. Molto raro. Very rare. First and only edition of this accounting arithmetics vademecum: the author means to help with business mathematics, starting from the most common situations, and then he deals with goods descriptions, markets, currencies from various cities. The most curious section of the volume consists in more than 250 problems to solve, with colorful examples giving a fresh portrait of economic life in XVII Century, between science and litterature. Good copy, with minor flaw on title.

London: Printed by T.H. For Edward Dod, and are to be sold in Ivie Lane, 1646. FIRST EDITION. Large octavo, pp. 386. In contemporary full speckled calf, gilt decoration to spine, marbled end papers. Bookplate with Latin motto attached to pastedown. Minute early, professional, near-invisible repairs to the "Envoi". Boards scuffed, hinges starting, spine and corners repaired, foxing to some leaves, heavier in places. A respectable copy. Sir Thomas Browne delighted in the discussion of fables, and painstakingly applied himself to the discovery of the truth behind them, and the more marvellous the story, the more he enjoyed the investigation of it. His fame for encyclopedic knowledge was firmly established during his lifetime, and his assistance was frequently sought on scientific or antiquarian inquiries. He was one of few men of his era to have read Dante's 'Inferno,' which was also a source of inspiration to him. Although he professed his anxiety to dispel popular superstitions, he believed in astrology, alchemy, witchcraft, and magic, and the Ptolemaic system of astronomy. An unfortunate practical illustration of his credulity occured in 1664, when Amy Duny and Rose Cullender were being tried as witches. Browne declared 'that the fits were natural, but heightened by the devils cooperating with the malice of the witches, at whose instance he did the villainies,' and he cited some recent similar cases in Denmark. It has been suggested that this comment directly led to a conviction of witchcraft for both women. Keynes [73].
