Thomas Browne
Pseudodoxia Epidemica by Thomas Browne, 1646 London, Printed by T.H. for Edward Dod. The Volume is in Excellent Condition, bound in full blind-ruled English calf, contemporary to the time of publication, with the spine divided into six compartments by five raised bands, with the board edges gilt and leaf edges red speckled. Internally the leaves are generally clean and amply margined, ruled throughout, with a tear to the margin of Pp. 261/2, some scattered foxing on occasion and little else in the way of stains or tears Pseudodoxia Epidemica is a work by Thomas Browne challenging and refuting the "vulgar" or common errors and superstitions of his age. This was a valuable source of information which found itself upon the shelves of many homes in seventeenth century England, being in the vanguard of the scientific writing, and it paved the way for much subsequent popular scientific journalism. Its science includes many examples of Browne's 'at-first-hand' empiricism as well as early examples of the formulation of scientific hypothesis. The work includes evidence of Browne's adherence to the Baconian method of empirical observation of nature, and was in the vanguard of work-in-progress scientific journalism during the 17th-century scientific revolution. Throughout its pages frequent examples of Browne's subtle humour can also be found. It first appeared in 1646 and went through five subsequent editions … [Click Below for Full Description]

VAN ESPEN, Zeger Bernard.
, . . Dekkers, Bibl. Belg. juridica, p. 52, no. 16. Third edition of the collected works of the Belgian canonist Zeger Bernard Van Espen (1646-1728). He was a lucid and clarifying expositor of the discipline of the ancient Church, which led to a certain fame at the end of the 17th century. Because of his involvement with Jansenist and Gallican doctrine Van Espen fled to Maastricht and his Jus ecclesiasticum universum was put on the Index in 1704. After his death all his works would be deemed heretical. Volume one lacking half-title, some occasional spots and slightly rubbed along the extremities, otherwise in very good condition.

Incisione su rame, in ottime condizioni. Rare plan of Porto Longone, also known as Porto Azzurro, on the Island of Elba. Published in Les Glorieuses Conquestes de Louis le Grand - one of the most important works in the 17th century. Shows the bay and the surrounding area in great detail, with mountains, rivers, cliffs, and woods. The battle plan shows the forts, camps and tents, and sailing war ships. Two extensive keys explain the camp and the fortress. With a small inset map showing the entire island and the near Italian mainland coast with the city of Piombino. Copper engraving, in very good condition.

(Amsterdam, Joannes Janssonius, 1646).Oblong 8vo. Modern wrappers. With 26 engraved plates. 56 pp. (text set in two columns).Extracted from Commelin's collection of voyages. - The first successful Dutch trading voyage to the East Indies. The fleet sent out from Amsterdam by the successor of the company that financed De Houtman's venture, now called the Old East India Company, was a smashing success. Eight ships commanded by Jacob van Neck and Wybrand van Warwijck left Texel on May 1, 1598. Fifteen month later, on July 17, Van Neck returned from Bantam with four of his ships fully laden with pepper. The rest of the fleet, under Van Warwijck and Jacob van Heemskerck, made other stops on Java and then went to Banda, Amboina, and the Moluccas; here they established the three factories which became the foundation for later Dutch controle of the Moluccan spice trade. Van Heemskerck arrived in Amsterdam with two ships on May 19, 1600; Van Warwijck arrived with the remaining two ships at the end of August, 1600. The major contributions made by this account were full descriptions of Banda, Amboina, and the Moluccas. Appended is a Malay-Javanese-Dutch word list (Lach & Van Kley, Asia in the making of Europe III,1, p.439-440).Landwehr VOC, 250.
