SANNAZARO (Jacopo)
In Venetia Appresso li Guerigli, 1646. 12mo, 103 x 53, pp. [6] 7 - 264; [2] 3 - 95 [96 "Registro"], including engraved and printed title-page and separate title-page following page 264 for "Rime di Missier Giacomo Sannazaro Nuouamente ristampatem & ripurgate di molti errori: E aggiuntoni di vuouo in questa vitima Impressione, la Terza Parte," with the same imprint and date and continuous collalation (the first leaf is signed [M]), but new pagaination, nicely bound in contemporary vellum; covers a bit soiled but a very good copy. The Arcadia was one of the most popular books that Jacopo Sannazaro (1457 - 1530) published in 1504. Usually called a prosometer, a mixture of prose and poetry, with the author appearing as the shepherd Sincero. Perhaps the most interesting feature of this edition is the publisher's rather lavish dedication to the famous opera singer Anna Renzi (c. 1620 - c. 1665), probably opera's first diva. Uncommon. OCLC locates copies in Southern Illinois University; Catholic Institute of Paris, National Library of Spain, and the Danish National Libary [Attributes: Signed Copy]

[Click Below for Full Description]

BLAEU, JOAN
[Click Below for Full Description]

[Venice, 1646. [Venice,, 1646. c1646]. Walnut panel, with carving, and ink, small shelf along the top with supports to the side, some areas of restoration. The panel, painted at the beginning of the Cretan War (1645-1669), features the siege of Chania to the left and the blockade of Rethymno to the the right, flanking the plans are three Venetian noblemen. The large central figure is shown in the fashionable European dress of the time. In his left hand, which he rests on his hip, he holds a broad brimmed hat with ostrich feathers, with the other hand he gestures to Rethymno. He is framed by a classical archway with Corinthian columns and a checker board floor. The two gentleman, to the left and right, are about half his size and are shown advancing towards him. The gentleman on the left holds out an apple. They are both framed by columns and an archway but this time the arch is rendered as an acanthus scroll. The whole image is framed by an acanthus scroll border. Although none of the figures are named, it is possible that the central figure is Andrea Corner the provveditore generale of Crete in 1645. Andrea Corner played an important role in the defence of Candia in 1645; he died, in 1646, at the battle for Rethymno, when a bullet hit him on his breast. The two figures to the left and right of the panel are probably those of Andrea Corner's sons: one of them, Cattarino, took part in the defence of Candia, where he was wounded by an arrow on his neck. The plan of Chania bears the inscription "Pianta della Cenea [?assalto di Turchi] l'anno MDCXIV [1614 but 1645]". A rath … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sumptibus viduae Scherffianae, Atdorf, 1646. not paginated, Arabic and Latin text, contemporary full calf leather binding (18th century) with rich spine-gilt, gold-embossed decoration, marbled edges, marbled end papers, decorative gilt fillets on boards and on inside of end papers, upper spine and corners a little bumped, some pages are browned, otherwise copy in good condition. Rare work of the Weimar-born Protestant theologian and Orientalist Theodoricus Hackspan (1607-1659), who after his studies in Jena, Altdorf and Helmstedt, first became a professor of Hebraistics, then of theology. "H. was a thorough and astute connoisseur of the Scriptures, and besides Sal. Glaß the most important Hebraist of his time. He had studied the rabbis thoroughly, and used the knowledge gained from them for theological science. He was also proficient in Arabic and Syriac "(ADB X, 299F). Hackspan’s Grammar drawn from Koranic texts ("Not to be sneered at": Schnurrer). Theodor Hackspan professor of Hebrew at the university of Altdorf issued an Arabic grammar work, which ended in a series of excerpts from the Qur'an illustrating the tenets of Muslim belief. This 110 pages work is comprised of two parts of roughly equal length: an introduction to Arabic, and the eponymous Fides et Leges Mohammædis (‘The faith and laws of Muhammad’). The work ends with a seemingly unrelated one-page appendix enumerating Arabic astronomical terms. Size: 8vo. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Click Below for Full Description]

1646. [Literature French 17th] GUEZ OF BALZAC (Jean-Louis) 1597-1654 Jean-Louis Guez of Balzac Jean-Louis Guez de Balzac, born in Angouleme on May 31, 1597 and died in Angouleme on February 8, 1654, is a French libertine writer, well known in his time for the quality of his prose, which appears in particular in his Letters. His art of bitter satire breaks out in The Prince, pseudo-eulogy of Louis XIII. BIOGRAPHY Guez de Balzac, nicknamed "the restorer of the French language", is one of the writers who has contributed most to reforming the French language. He was the son of the mayor of Angouleme, Guillaume Guez, who was ennobled and took the name of the stronghold of Balzac, on the edge of the Charente, where he built his castle. He studied at the Jesuits, Angouleme then Poitiers whose he attended the university to learn theology. Guez Balzac then undertook, in 1612, studies at the University of Leiden where he was the classmate, and probably the lover, Théophile de Viau with whom he later exchange bitter recriminations. He was afterwards the secretary of the Duke of Epernon at Metz. After spending two years in Rome from 1621 to 1623 as agent of the Cardinal de la Valette, he came to Paris where he had made himself known by his letters, which, addressed to his acquaintances and important persons of the court, gave him a great reputation. Richelieu noticed this and made him act as historiographer and the king's counselor in his advice with a pension of 2,000 livres. Published in 1624, the first volume of his Letters earned him from the outset the highest praise. Nicknamed "t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Quarto (219 x165 mm). Contemporary limp vellum over paste paper boards, spine hand lettered in ink. Printer's device on title, woodcut initials, chapter headings and vignettes. Title lightly dust soiled, lower board with old ink inscription in English, small nick to fore-edge of front board and single wormhole to the front joint; a superb copy of a very scarce book. Rare first and only edition, dedicated by Eon to Charles de la Porte, Seigneur de la Meilleraie, the governor of Brittany, "whom he extolled as inheriting the mantle of economic leadership of the nation from Richelieu" (Rothbard). A native of Saint-Malo, Eon studied under the Carmelites, later establishing himself as procureur général based in Nantes. Together with Montchrétien's Traicté de l'oeconomie politique and Crucé's Le nouveau Cynée, the present work reflects clearly certain currents of early seventeenth century thought, among them, nascent mercantilism. Written in defence of the recently formed Société de la Bourse Commune de Nantes, "Eon's book was a compilation of standard mercantilist doctrines... He almost rivalled Montchrétien in his hatred for foreigners, and in his wish to drastically curtail their activities in or selling to France. Two of his personal and original contributions were his paean to … [Click Below for Full Description]

MEZERAY, Francois de
1646. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. François de Mézeray was a 17th-century French historian most known for his 'History of France'. While many such historical works exist, Mézeray's approach is a bit different in that he sought to collect and summarize existing French and Latin chronicles. This impressive volume covers the historical period from the early 5th-century Clovis and the legends of Pharamond, to the 14th-century reign of Queen Isabeau. Other important royals include Philip of Valois, Henry I, Saint Louis IX, Philip the Tall, Charles the Mad, and many others. [Attributes: First Edition]
