VIRGIL
officina Abrahami Commelini. 1646 RARE & BEAUTIFUL Works Virgil Aeneid Bucolics Georgics Mythology Schrevel If I cannot move heaven, I will raise hell. Virgil, The Aeneid A rare, 17th-century printing of the works of Virgil. This 1646 edition includes Virgil s most famous works Bucolics or Eclogues , the Georgics and the Aeneid . The Aeneid is one of Virgil s most important and well-known works; an epic poem that tells the story of Aeneas, a Greco-Roman myth, and his travels. This work is considered one of the most important and best works of literature ever to be written. (Damen). This impressive and important 1646 edition was printed with commentary by Cornelis Schrevel. Many bibliographers cite this as having been printed in Amsterdam, but the dedicatory epistle of Commelin to Valkenier date it being from Leiden. Commelin himself raises uncertainty as to the validity of the commentary, as he declares to have chosen notes by Schrevel (Barbier). The success of this edition of Virgil was much attributed more to the execution of the tome itself, rather than the content. Item number: #8416 Price: $750 VIRGIL P. VAN ESPEN, Zeger Bernard.
Dekkers, Bibl. Belg. juridica, p. 52, no. 16. Third edition of the collected works of the Belgian canonist Zeger Bernard Van Espen (1646-1728). He was a lucid and clarifying expositor of the discipline of the ancient Church, which led to a certain fame at the end of the 17th century. Because of his involvement with Jansenist and Gallican doctrine Van Espen fled to Maastricht and his Jus ecclesiasticum universum was put on the Index in 1704. After his death all his works would be deemed heretical. Volume one lacking half-title, some occasional spots and slightly rubbed along the extremities, otherwise in very good condition.

Pietro MIOTTE (Attivo a Napoli nel XVII sec.)
Incisione su rame, in ottime condizioni. Rare plan of Porto Longone, also known as Porto Azzurro, on the Island of Elba. Published in Les Glorieuses Conquestes de Louis le Grand - one of the most important works in the 17th century. Shows the bay and the surrounding area in great detail, with mountains, rivers, cliffs, and woods. The battle plan shows the forts, camps and tents, and sailing war ships. Two extensive keys explain the camp and the fortress. With a small inset map showing the entire island and the near Italian mainland coast with the city of Piombino. Copper engraving, in very good condition.

Stefano della BELLA (Firenze 1610 - 1664)
Acquaforte, 1646, firmata e datata in lastra in basso. Etching, 1646 , signed and dated in the plate at the bottom. Rare example of the first state of four, before the cock on the steeple of the church of St. Germain L' Auxerrois. Magnificent proof, rich in shades , printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the copperplate or with very thin margins, small abrasions visible on the verso, otherwise in excellent condition. ORDINE MAURIZIANO.

The Arcadia was one of the most popular books that Jacopo Sannazaro (1457 - 1530) published in 1504. Usually called a prosometer, a mixture of prose and poetry, with the author appearing as the shepherd Sincero. Perhaps the most interesting feature of this edition is the publisher's rather lavish dedication to the famous opera singer Anna Renzi (c. 1620 - c. 1665), probably opera's first diva. Uncommon. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Venice, 1646. [Venice,, 1646. c1646]. Walnut panel, with carving, and ink, small shelf along the top with supports to the side, some areas of restoration. The panel, painted at the beginning of the Cretan War (1645-1669), features the siege of Chania to the left and the blockade of Rethymno to the the right, flanking the plans are three Venetian noblemen. The large central figure is shown in the fashionable European dress of the time. In his left hand, which he rests on his hip, he holds a broad brimmed hat with ostrich feathers, with the other hand he gestures to Rethymno. He is framed by a classical archway with Corinthian columns and a checker board floor. The two gentleman, to the left and right, are about half his size and are shown advancing towards him. The gentleman on the left holds out an apple. They are both framed by columns and an archway but this time the arch is rendered as an acanthus scroll. The whole image is framed by an acanthus scroll border. Although none of the figures are named, it is possible that the central figure is Andrea Corner the provveditore generale of Crete in 1645. Andrea Corner played an important role in the defence of Candia in 1645; he died, in 1646, at the battle for Rethymno, when a bullet hit him on his breast. The two figures to the left and right of the panel are probably those of Andrea Corner's sons: one of them, Cattarino, took part in the defence of Candia, where he was wounded by an arrow on his neck. The plan of Chania bears the inscription "Pianta della Cenea [?assalto di Turchi] l'anno MDCXIV [1614 but 1645]". A rath … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
