Bruno Ryves
1646 An exceedingly rare contemporary account of the English Civil War seen from the Royalist side. Bruno Ryves (1596-1677) acted as author/editor for what was a Royalist 'news book' known as Mercurius Rusticus and printed in parts - starting in August 1642. One source has Ryves as King Charles I's chaplain. This copy contains 18 parts which focus on 1642 and 1643 with numerous accounts of the treatment of royalist supporters by the opposing parliamentary forces. It contains intimate details of the betrayals and heroism that attend civil wars. It is possible that this volume is incomplete because the 'brief chronologie' mentionned in the title is not present - but we can find no other copies of this work to confirm this. In half leather binding - with decorative spine with gilt titles and marbled boards. The binding is rubbed but sound. The endpapers have been replaced at some point recently. With contents page which has had a paper repair and the author's name written in, in ink and crossed out ink signature to reverse; 'the Preface'; note that 'in the Catalogue of persons slaine, these under-written were forgotten to be inserted on the Kings side, in their due place. Earle of Kingstone. Sir William Wentworth. Colonel Carnaby. Col. Bentall. Master Sackville, sonne to the Earle of Dorset.'; and contents in 18 parts - the final part having 'finis' at the end. The contents are in good condition. The pages are browned at the edges with occasional spotting - but generally sound and there is no loss of text.

Giovanni Battista Ferrari
Rome. Giovanni Battista Ferrari (1584-1655) devoted himself to the study and cultivation of ornamental plants and in 1646 published Hesperides sive de Malorum Aureorum Cultura et Usu Libri Quatuor, the first book devoted to citrus fruit. These bold, detailed studies of citrus fruits showed each tied with ribbons and labeled with their specimen names. The sumptuous illustrations of specimens and information included in this book such as classification, origin and locations, methods of cultivation, and medical uses of citrus fruits were by Dutch printmaker Cornelius Bloemart, whom was from a family of Dutch artists and was known as a great botanical artist. This series includes 110 plates of depictions of mainly life-size fruits, whole and in section, along with foliage and flowers and a few cultivation, mythological and allegorical scenes. This engraving, 13.5" x 9.5" is in excellent condition with only slight staining in the margins and evidence of previous binding.

Arduser, Johann
Zurich, Switzerland: J. J. Bodmer, 1646. Book. Very good- condition. Hardcover. Second edition. Quarto (4to). Lacks the title page and 8 pages of plates, including some fold-outs. [viii], 308 leaves. Original full vellum binding is stained and soiled, with wrinkling to front board, with the fore-edge vellum loosened. This is the revised and enlarged second edition of one of the earliest and most comprehensive German handbooks on land surveying. Swiss mathemetician Arduser (1584-1665) discusses the theoretical problems of Euclid's geometry and offers detailed descriptions of two surveying instruments. He includes instructions on how to build and operate them: a clinometer with horizontal compasses and Galileo's newly invented "instrumentum partium" which is carefully depicted in one of the unfortunately lacking plates. The text contains over 100 woodblock illustrations and diagrams, and 19 two-thirds or full page woodcuts. Minor staining to bottom edge of pages, affecting the margin only. Title continues "...sich im bawen, feldmassen vnd visieren zu uben begeren, zu nutz und gefallen beschriben, und jetz von newem vmb zwey Bucher vermehrt.".

This engraving, 13.75" x 9.5", depicting a nude Hercules standing in chiaroscuro on a pediment is in excellent condition. The artist used shadowing to give muscular tone and depth to young Hercules's body.

MERIAN, Matthaeus
Frankfurt:, c.1646. [World map] Size: 350 x 260 mm. Mounted size: 520 x 435 mm. Copper engraving. Later colour. Excellent condition. A very attractive and detailed world map, laid out according to Mercator's projection; text in German in ornamented gothic and Latin scripts; two polar hemispheres in the lower corners. The acclaimed Swiss engraver Matthew Merian prepared this world map from Blaeu's world map, though it lacks the latter's decorative border and is about two-thirds the size. Originally published in 1638, this copy, without Merian's signature, was prepared for Gottfried's Archontologica in 1646.

ALPINI, P.
Gulielmi Pele, 1646. Title in red and black, decorative woodcut on dedication, 3 full-page plates and 2 text illustrations. Nineteenth century boards, re-backed; interior is lightly toned throughout, with occasional spots and a small tear in the lower blank margin not affecting text. From the library of A. Gabriel Pouchet, with a stamp on recto of first blank leaf. Generally an excellent copy. First appearance of both treatises together. The present work is essentially the 1645 edition (printed by Nicolaus Redelichuysen) with a cancel title. The first book represents Alpini's best-known and most important medical work, a comprehensive account of Egyptian medical practice, and among the earliest accounts of non-European medicine. Of special interest is his introduction of moxa (mugwort) to European medical practice. The second book, on the medicine of the East Indies, was based on de Bondt's research in Java. It is divided into four sections: criticisms of Garcia de Orta's treatise on Asian materia medica; health and diet in the East Indies; Indian methods of treatment; and observations from autopsies. His treatise includes the first modern descriptions of cholera, beri-beri, tropical dysentery, and yaws, making it "a milestone in the history of medicine." n n

Second state of the frontispiece, re-incised with heavier lines around the leaves of the garland and the bulge in the left sleeve. According the Beaurline and Clayton, the plate was most certainly re-incised in the course of printing and is fairly evenly distributed with the various states of the title. Suckling is perhaps best remembered for the fine lyrics in his dramas, including the famous line "Why so pale and wan, fond lover?" (in Aglaura). D'Avenant called Suckling the greatest gallant and gamester of his day. He is also remembered as the inventor of the game of cribbage. L. A. Beaurline and T.
