(Amsterdam, Joannes Janssonius, 1646).Oblong 8vo. Modern wrappers. 133 pp. (text set in two columns; last page in facsimile).Extracted from Commelin's collection of voyages. - 'Hagenaer, a VOC senior merchant, visited Japan three times: in 1634, in 1635-36, and again in 1637, years in which Caron was resident there. While Hagenaer attempts no comprehensive descriptions of Japan, his journal contains some interesting details about VOC trade in Japan, especially about the Dutch embassy in Edo in 1635-36, and some description of the sights and experiences along the way' (Lach & Van Kley, III, p.1868). SPILBERGEN, Joris van
Amsterdam,: Jansson,, 1646.. Engraved map, 185 x 435 mm.; with central fold, in fine condition mounted. Important early map of the Pacific with insets of the Le Maire Strait and New Guinea from Commelin's compendium of Dutch voyages, Begin Ende Voortgangh (see catalogue number 75).This map comes from the chapter which describes Spilbergen's second voyage to the Moluccas via the Strait of Magellan and the narrative of Le Maire and Schouten's voyage of 1615-1617 to the Australian regions. The momentous Pacific crossing of Le Maire and Schouten was 'the last expedition of the seventeenth century to search for Terra Australis from the east...' (Schilder). The larger inset shows Le Maire's discoveries along the northern coast of New Guinea, including the detailed voyage track. Of particular interest is the westernmost island depicted, which clearly shows Gilolo. Gilolo or Jailolo, which is situated on Halmahera - the largest island of the Moluccas - was the original home of Giolo, Dampier's "Painted Prince". Giolo and his mother had been captured and sold as slaves at Mindanao to Moody, an English trader. Dampier purchased a half-interest in Giolo, during his trading voyage of 1690 (described in New Voyage round the World, 1697) and returned with him to London.

One of the most important early histories of Chile. 1646. Rome. Francesco Cavalli. In 4to (262 mm x 182 mm). 4 ff. + 378 + 1 ff. + 12 [plates] + 6 [plates] + folding map. Elegant 19th century red morocco, by Riviere, boards with gilt fillet, spine with raised bands, tooled and lettered in gilt; professionally restored, minor soiling. An excellent copy, carefully cleaned and pressed, title restored at gutter, very attractive, splendid tall copy. First Italian edition printed the same year as the first in Spanish; the simultaneity of both relations makes it impossible to assess to their priority in time. Ovalle provides a description of the geography and natural history of the province of Chile, including Tierra del Fuego, and describes the native populations who inhabited the region. In particular, this work is a highly important source for the study of the Araucanian Indians, as it deals at length with their social structure, political organization, diet, and domestic life. Ovalle also discusses the early contact period between the Spanish and Indians, the ensuing conflicts, the Spanish settlement, the advent of Catholic missionaries, proselytization and conversion, the role of the Society of Jesus, miracles and apparitions of the Virgin, and numerous other topics. Overall, it is one of the most primary and richest sources of information on the physical and cultural reality of the country, and provides a remarkable amount of information of the Indian ethnology. Ovalle (1601 ? 1651) was a Chilean born historian, educator and Jesuit; he lived in Rome from 1642 to 1650 where h … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rich, Robert, Earl of Warwick:
[England]. Aug. 20, 1646.. [1]p. Folio. Old fold lines. Some light soiling and wear. Very good. Manuscript document signed by Robert Rich, the second Earl of Warwick, who was commander of the British Navy and a promoter of the American colonies. In this memorandum, address to the Commissioners of His Majesty's Navy, the Committe of Lords and Commons for the Admiralty and Cinque Ports recommends that one John Coxe be made gunner on the ship the John. It is signed by Robert Rich ("Warwicke"), Dudley North, John Rolle, John Trevor, Alexander Berne. Robert Rich (1587-1658) was an important English political figure in the 17th century. After failing to persuade the original Puritan "pilgrims" to settle in Guiana, Rich - as a member of the Council for New England - secured for John Peirce the patent on which the Plymouth colony existed for the first eight years. He likewise signed the second patent for William Bradford in 1630, and was instrumental in the patent for the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was also involved in privateering and several settlement schemes along the Central American coast and in the West Indies. His signature is rare.

Bruno Ryves
1646 An exceedingly rare contemporary account of the English Civil War seen from the Royalist side. Bruno Ryves (1596-1677) acted as author/editor for what was a Royalist 'news book' known as Mercurius Rusticus and printed in parts - starting in August 1642. One source has Ryves as King Charles I's chaplain. This copy contains 18 parts which focus on 1642 and 1643 with numerous accounts of the treatment of royalist supporters by the opposing parliamentary forces. It contains intimate details of the betrayals and heroism that attend civil wars. It is possible that this volume is incomplete because the 'brief chronologie' mentionned in the title is not present - but we can find no other copies of this work to confirm this. In half leather binding - with decorative spine with gilt titles and marbled boards. The binding is rubbed but sound. The endpapers have been replaced at some point recently. With contents page which has had a paper repair and the author's name written in, in ink and crossed out ink signature to reverse; 'the Preface'; note that 'in the Catalogue of persons slaine, these under-written were forgotten to be inserted on the Kings side, in their due place. Earle of Kingstone. Sir William Wentworth. Colonel Carnaby. Col. Bentall. Master Sackville, sonne to the Earle of Dorset.'; and contents in 18 parts - the final part having 'finis' at the end. The contents are in good condition. The pages are browned at the edges with occasional spotting - but generally sound and there is no loss of text.
