MOREAU, Pierre.
First and only edition of the Dutch translation of a work on the Dutch-Portuguese wars in Brazil by Pierre Moreau, a French secretary in Dutch service who came to Pernambuco in 1646. His clear description contains many curious details about the reason for the war, mentioned nowhere else."Historians universally praise his work. It is undoubtedly an essential source book for information about the events which occurred at the beginning of the Dutch war, as well as giving an idea of the socioeconomic aspect of life in Pernambuco under the Dutch occupation" (Borba de Moreas). The work was translated into Dutch by Jan Hendrik Glazemaker, known for his translations of Descartes and Spinoza.Slightly browned, a few water stains and a rubbed spine, but in good condition. An essential work on the Dutch-Portuguese wars in Brazil.Asher 277; Borba de Moreas, p. 595; Rodrigues 1711; Sabin 50580; STCN (7 copies).

AMABLE, Saint Bonaventure de
Paris: Martin Hauteville, 1646. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. A rare edition of a Catholic breviary, "Office for Holy Week", filled with liturgical prayers, scripture passages for confessions and communion, and devotionals on the mysteries of the Catholic Church and faith. While 17th-century breviaries are rare in themselves, those with fine bindings like this example are exceedingly desirable. This edition includes both Latin and French texts. This edition is published alongside the 1646 edition of Claude Prost's 'Office of the Nativity'. Beautiful decorative binding with full-page engravings.

Bonaventure & Abraham Elzevier, Leiden, 1646. First collected edition, rare, of the mathematical writings of François Viète (1540-1603), the greatest French mathematician of the sixteenth century, who was "the first extensively to use letters of the alphabet to represent numerical quantities" (Hutchinson's Dictionary of Scientific Bibliography, p. 690), and "the first mathematician of his age to think occasionally as mathematicians habitually think today" (Bell, p. 99). Viète used letters "both for known . and for unknown quantities" and "this innovation, considered one of the most significant advances in the history of mathematics, prepared the way for the development of algebra" (DSB); it earned him the sobriquet "the father of algebra" (ibid.). Viète's Isagoge in artem analyticam, the earliest work on symbolic algebra, opens the present edition and is followed by 15 further tracts on algebra, numerical analysis, geometry, trigonometry, and the newly adopted Gregorian calendar, the last of which include three volvelles (here bound in uncut on a separate sheet). Viète developed "the systematic application of syncopated algebra to the solution of geometric problems" and thus is widely considered to have paved the way for René Descartes's invention of analytic geometry. The young Isaac Newton carefully worked through a copy of the Opera when he was studying in Cambridge (Whiteside, p. 21), and this influenced his own work on algebra and analytic geometry. The Opera was edited by the influential Leiden University mathematician Frans van Schooten (1615-60), who numbered among … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Stefano della BELLA (Firenze 1610 - 1664)
Acquaforte, 1646, firmata e datata in lastra in basso. Etching, 1646 , signed and dated in the plate at the bottom. Rare example of the first state of four, before the cock on the steeple of the church of St. Germain L' Auxerrois. Magnificent proof, rich in shades , printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the copperplate or with very thin margins, small abrasions visible on the verso, otherwise in excellent condition. The view of Paris taken from the Pont Neuf is one of the masterpieces of Stefano della Bella and her biggest plate. The table is extraordinari … [Click Below for Full Description]

Text set in double columns.Third and best edition of the 'Origin and Progress of the Dutch East India Company' ; first published in Amsterdam in 1645. - This rare and extensively illustrated collection of voyages, containing the journals of 21 navigators to the East and West Indies, represents the material for any research on Dutch exploration of trading routes. Isaac Commelin (1598-1676) did manage to get hold of some unpublished accounts which are here printed for the first time, and which he must have obtained, clandestinely or otherwise, from someone connected with the East-India Company. .. about half of the material is completely new, though a few of the other accounts now appear in Dutch for the first time, having been previously printed in some other language (C.R. Boxer in the Introduction to the facsimile edition). As well as the East Indies, there is much material on the Straits of Magellan (since several of the voyages came from the east), and descriptions of a number of significant early visits to the Philippines, China and Japan, India, Mauritius, etc. Among them are the Arctic discoveries of Heemskerk and Barentsz, the East-India voyages of Houtman, de Keyzer and Van Spilbergen, the circumnavigations by Van Noort, Le Maire, Schouten and Van Spilbergen. Lugduni Batavorum: officina Abrahami Commelini, 1646. 1646 RARE & BEAUTIFUL Works Virgil Aeneid Bucolics Georgics Mythology Schrevel "If I cannot move heaven, I will raise hell." ― Virgil,The AeneidA rare, 17th-century printing of the works of Virgil. This 1646 edition includes Virgil's most famous works - Bucolics' or 'Eclogues', the 'Georgics' and the 'Aeneid'. 'The Aeneid' is one of Virgil's most important and well-known works; an epic poem that tells the story of Aeneas, a Greco-Roman myth, and his travels. This work is considered one of the most important and best works of literature ever to be written. (Damen). This impressive and important 1646 edition was printed with commentary by Cornelis Schrevel. Many bibliographers cite this as having been printed in Amsterdam, but the dedicatory epistle of Commelin to Valkenier date it being from Leiden. Commelin himself raises uncertainty as to the validity of the commentary, as he declares to have chosen notes by Schrevel (Barbier). The success of this edition of Virgil was much attributed more to the execution of the tome itself, rather than the content.Item number: #8416 Price: $750VIRGILP.
Three astronomical articles (2 in the form of letters) by England's first Royal Astronomer, John Flamsteed (1646-1719) at the Greenwich Observatory from its establishment in 1675, published in the Philosophical Transactions of the British Royal Society in the years 1683 and 1685. The first article gives observations of a 1682 lunar eclipse by Flamsteed himself, Edmund Halley and a certain Haynes. The second gives Flamsteed's calculations of the eclipses of Jupiter's four moons for the coming year 1686, intended in part as an aid to the determination of longitude. The third gives an engraved dial with four scales around its perimeter, with Flamsteed's description of its use to calculate the positions of Jupiter's moons.. Flamsteed's magnum opus, his great star catalogue and charts, appeared posthumously in 1725 and 1729, so his most important publications during his own lifetime were a single book in 1680 and a dozen short astronomical articles in the years 1672 to 1686, three of them present here. The articles and plate have been disbound, but they are otherwise in very good condition, with only some minor spots in the text and a couple tears (one repaired). Three of Flamsteed's rare non-posthumous astronomical publications, with an engraved plate of his calculating dial.for Flamsteed's life: DSB V, pp. 22-26..

Haarlem - Joan Blaeu, 1649
, . . Third edition of the collected works of the Belgian canonist Zeger Bernard Van Espen (1646-1728). He was a lucid and clarifying expositor of the discipline of the ancient Church, which led to a certain fame at the end of the 17th century. Because of his involvement with Jansenist and Gallican doctrine Van Espen fled to Maastricht and his Jus ecclesiasticum universum was put on the Index in 1704. After his death all his works would be deemed heretical. Volume one lacking half-title, some occasional spots and slightly rubbed along the extremities, otherwise in very good condition.l Dekkers, Bibl. Belg. juridica, p. 52, no. 16.

Thomas Browne
1646. Thomas Browne. Pseudodoxia Epidemica; or, Enquiries into Very Many Received Tenents, and Commonly Presumed Truths. London: T.H. for Edward Dod, 1646. First edition. Folio (27 x 18 cm). [20], 386 pages, including license leaf. Contemporary calf ruled in blind, replaced spine-label; front cover re-attached, both covers with partially repaired chips, spine chipped with loss, endpaper renewed, some foxing and browning and wear at corners. Still, a good if not elegant copy. Keynes 73., ESTC R1093 [ Browne is one of very great English stylists. The subject hardly matters, whether it’s a discussion of geometrically-patterned gardens, of recently discovered ancient burials, or one of the thousands of essays on “Why I am a Christian.” This work is on misconceptions mostly about natural history, and worth reading to appreciate great writing. VIRGIL
Lugduni Batavorum: officina Abrahami Commelini, 1646. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "If I cannot move heaven, I will raise hell." ― Virgil, The Aeneid A rare, 17th-century printing of the works of Virgil. The success of this edition of Virgil was much attributed more to the execution of the tome itself, rather than the content.
