Quarto (219 x165 mm). Contemporary limp vellum over paste paper boards, spine hand lettered in ink. Printer's device on title, woodcut initials, chapter headings and vignettes. Title lightly dust soiled, lower board with old ink inscription in English, small nick to fore-edge of front board and single wormhole to the front joint; a superb copy of a very scarce book. Rare first and only edition, dedicated by Eon to Charles de la Porte, Seigneur de la Meilleraie, the governor of Brittany, "whom he extolled as inheriting the mantle of economic leadership of the nation from Richelieu" (Rothbard). A native of Saint-Malo, Eon studied under the Carmelites, later establishing himself as procureur général based in Nantes. Together with Montchrétien's Traicté de l'oeconomie politique and Crucé's Le nouveau Cynée, the present work reflects clearly certain currents of early seventeenth century thought, among them, nascent mercantilism. Written in defence of the recently formed Société de la Bourse Commune de Nantes, "Eon's book was a compilation of standard mercantilist doctrines... He almost rivalled Montchrétien in his hatred for foreigners, and in his wish to drastically curtail their activities in or selling to France. Two of his personal and original contributions were his paean to … [Click Below for Full Description]

MEZERAY, Francois de
1646. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. François de Mézeray was a 17th-century French historian most known for his 'History of France'. While many such historical works exist, Mézeray's approach is a bit different in that he sought to collect and summarize existing French and Latin chronicles. This impressive volume covers the historical period from the early 5th-century Clovis and the legends of Pharamond, to the 14th-century reign of Queen Isabeau. Other important royals include Philip of Valois, Henry I, Saint Louis IX, Philip the Tall, Charles the Mad, and many others. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Click Below for Full Description]

ORDINE MAURIZIANO.
[Attributes: Hard Cover]

With 49 engraved plates. 112 pp. (text set in two columns).Extracted from Commelin's collection of voyages. - A group of Amsterdam merchants was responsible for the venture of the first Dutch voyage to the East in 1595. The four small ships sailed via the Cape of Good Hope to Bantam, a large trading centre on the west coast of Java. Three of the four ships finally returned to Amsterdam. 'Despite the loss of many men and one of the ships, troubles with both Javans and Portuguese, and profits barely large enough to cover expenses, the return of De Houtman's fleet set of a flurry of activity among Dutch entrepreneurs. In 1598, the year after its return, no fewer than twenty-five ships were sent out by merchants of the provinces of Holland and Zeeland alone' (Lach & Van Kley, Asia in the making, III,1, p.439). [Click Below for Full Description]
