François MAYNARD
Original collective edition containing some original pieces. One of the few copies containing the two epistles of Bois-Robert and Scarron (most copies contain less preliminary leaves). Portrait frontispiece of the author designed and engraved by Petrus by Daret; thumbnail of title, brand printer in the title page. Velin flexible full time. Smooth back silent. Light spots on the top plate. To work on the preliminary leaves, after the first two layers in bottom margin; although confined to the margins, many lace in the middle of preliminary leaves. Also of note, a gallery to the table and thus the last pages of text, still low margin. Some spots and yellowed. This edition was largely prepared by the author himself, understands the value of his work and of his approaching end (deceased in 1646), it has 268 rooms, including 173 unpublished. Some pieces that had appeared in anthologies are not included in this integral. François Maynard is one of the names Pricipals poetry of the first half of the seventeenth, alongside Malherbe, Racan Viau, Regnier. Disciple of Malherbe, his poetry is distinguished by the clarity of his style and regularity of his verses; there emerges also a certain melancholy. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. This book was published in Rome by Herman Scheus in 1646. Overall this print measures 9.5” x 13.5”. SCHENK. Pieter.
The Anglo-Dutch Garden 76; Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) XXV, p. 228, 1234-1258; Springer Bibl. Overzicht, pp. 43-44. A complete set of 16 numbered views of the magnificent buildings, gardens and woods of Cornelis de Jonge van Ellemeet's "Duinrel" estate, built on the edge of the dunes near Wassenaar. Like the other great Dutch estates of the 17th century, it included gardens, fountains, mazes, etc., but it is distinguished from the others by its extensive woods and uncultivated land, and its location at the edge of the sand dunes near the coast. This silvan flavour is also reflected in the emphasis on the Greco-Roman goddess Diana in the decoration, and the present series of engravings includes the Diana pavilion. When Ellemeet (1646-1721), Procurer General for the Dutch Republic, bought the estate in 1680, much of it was still wild land and dunes, and in the next two decades he turned it into the lavish wooded estate shown in the present prints. While some great estates of the day appeared in many different print series over the years or have even survived to the present day, the various views by Schenk are nearly the only surviving images of Duinrel. In very good condition, with large margins and only an occasional very minor spot. A fine and historically important series of prints of the Duinrel estate.

FLAMSTEED, John.
www.adsabs.harvard.edu (under Flamsteed and Flamsteedio); for Flamsteed's life: DSB V, pp. 22-26. Three astronomical articles (2 in the form of letters) by England's first Royal Astronomer, John Flamsteed (1646-1719) at the Greenwich Observatory from its establishment in 1675, published in the Philosophical Transactions of the British Royal Society in the years 1683 and 1685. The first article gives observations of a 1682 lunar eclipse by Flamsteed himself, Edmund Halley and a certain Haynes. The second gives Flamsteed's calculations of the eclipses of Jupiter's four moons for the coming year 1686, intended in part as an aid to the determination of longitude. The third gives an engraved dial with four scales around its perimeter, with Flamsteed's description of its use to calculate the positions of Jupiter's moons.. Flamsteed's magnum opus, his great star catalogue and charts, appeared posthumously in 1725 and 1729, so his most important publications during his own lifetime were a single book in 1680 and a dozen short astronomical articles in the years 1672 to 1686, three of them present here. The articles and plate have been disbound, but they are otherwise in very good condition, with only some minor spots in the text and a couple tears (one repaired). Three of Flamsteed's rare non-posthumous astronomical publications, with an engraved plate of his calculating dial.
