Marshall, Stephen
London: Pr. by Ric. Cotes for Steven Bowtell 4to (19.1 cm, 7.5"). [8], 256, [4 (index)] pp.. 1646 First edition of this reply to Tombes's Two Treatises — one of the most passionately debated publications of the infant baptism controversy — written by a popular and influential preacher. Marshall, John Geree, John Tombes, and a number of the most prominent theologians of the day debated prolifically on the topic; here, Marshall re-engages with Tombes's "destructive Artifice" (p. 3). Some holdings report (variously) 10 or 12 preliminary pages as present, but signature A is complete here, including one blank leaf. Recent marbled paper wrappers. Some light staining to a few early leaves, pages otherwise almost entirely clean.

Browne, Thomas
London: Printed by T.H. for Edward Dod, 1646. First edition. [xx], 386, [2] pp. 4to. 18th-century full calf, black morocco spine label. Joints cracked, covers worn, a few small tears to pages at margins, with larger piece torn from pp. 255-6 fore-edge margin, contemporary transcription of 17th century popular verse on rear blank, later marginalia in pencil sporadically throughout. First edition. [xx], 386, [2] pp. 4to. The first edition of Browne's Pseudodoxia Epidemica, commonly referred to as Vulgar Errors. Contains the most unusual collection of "tid-bits" and commonly held errors, discussing superstitions (that a salamander is able to live in flames; that hares are each of both sex; and of basilisks and griffins), religious errors (navels on Adam and Eve; that the Tower of Babel was erected against a second flood; and that the earth was slenderly peopled before the Flood), medical errors (the custom of blessing after a sneeze; that drowned men will float on the ninth day) and chapters on Pygmies and Gypsies. "Hydriotaphia," Browne's treatise examining various funereal practices in Britain, is often referred to as his masterpiece of rhetoric. "Religio medici having made [Browne] famous for piety and wit, Pseudodoxia now earned his reputation as scholar and naturalist. In this, his most substantial work, almost an encyclopaedia of seventeenth-century misconceptions and new knowledge, Browne took up numerous false beliefs" (ODNB). Keynes 73; ESTC R1093

Fabry was the first to recommend amputation above the diseased part, and is said to have been the first to amputate the thigh. In shutting off the circulation before amputation, he improvised a kind of tourniquet by means of a ligature tightened by a stick of wood. He showed that head injuries may cause insanity, extracted an iron splinter from the eye with a magnet, explored the auditory canal with a speculum of his invention, and described the first field-chest of drugs for army use' (Garrison, A history of medicine pp 275-6). Fabri also was the first to classify burns.'This large folio edition of his collected works includes his separately published monographs on dysentery, burns, lithotomy, and anatomy. [DAMPIER] SPILBERGEN, Joris van.
Amsterdam: Jansson, 1646. Engraved map, 185 x 435 mm.; with central fold, in fine condition and mounted. Important early map of the Pacific with insets of the Le Maire Strait and New Guinea from Commelin's compendium of Dutch voyages, Begin Ende Voortgangh. This map comes from the chapter which describes Spilbergen's second voyage to the Moluccas via the Strait of Magellan and the narrative of Le Maire and Schouten's voyage of 1615-1617 to the Australian regions. The momentous Pacific crossing of Le Maire and Schouten was 'the last expedition of the seventeenth century to search for Terra Australis from the east...' (Schilder). The larger inset shows Le Maire's discoveries along the northern coast of New Guinea, including the detailed voyage track. Of particular interest is the westernmost island depicted, which clearly shows Gilolo. Gilolo or Jailolo, which is situated on Halmahera - the largest island of the Moluccas - was the original home of Giolo, Dampier's "Painted Prince". Giolo and his mother had been captured and sold as slaves at Mindanao to Moody, an English trader. Dampier purchased a half-interest in Giolo, during his trading voyage of 1690 (described in New Voyage round the World, 1697) and returned with him to London.

Sheet measures 17" x 22.75".Map of the Turkish Empire centered on Arabia covering from the Caspian Sea to the horn of Africa. Fine detail throughout with cities, mountains, rivers and forests rendered. Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667) is considered the founder of the French school of cartography. Map was framed at one time with the outer margins showing stains from verso tape residue, still a lovely version of this hard-to-find map.

[VOC] COMMELIN, Isaac, compiler
Amsterdam: [Joannes Janssonius], 1646. Twenty-one parts in two volumes, oblong quarto (245 x 188 mm.); with 195 full page and 4 double page or folded plates, 25 full page and 6 double page or folded maps; a few repairs on edges of plates, one plate trimmed close at right-hand margin losing plate number and 20 mm. of edge detail, repair to blank margin of first title-page; a fine and solid set in overlapping modern vellum. The great compendium of early VOC voyages. A handsome set of this important work of Dutch East India Company voyages and discoveries, which is considered "the most important Dutch collection of travel literature published during the seventeenth century" (Lach, Asia in the making of Europe). The whole work is generously illustrated with beautiful maps and plates in the finest tradition of Dutch book illustration. Many of the voyage accounts included are in fact published here for the first time, including the second voyage of van Neck (1600-1604), and both voyages of van der Hagen (1599-1601; 1603-1606). An important inclusion is an account of the first voyage of van Neck and van Warwijck (1598-1600), now most famous as being the first voyage of Willem Jansz, who would make the first recorded landfall on the Australian mainland in 1605.In fact Jansz and the small Dutch ship the Duyfken, both separately and together, feature in four of the 21 component narratives that make up the book: these references to the slightly chronicled ship represent the only original printed sources for the sketchy history that we have of the earliest discoveries made in the Austra … [Click Below for Full Description]

Minute early professional near-invisible repairs to the "Envoi". Boards scuffed, hinges starting, spine and corners repaired, foxing to some leaves, heavier in places. A respectable copy. Sir Thomas Browne delighted in the discussion of fables, and painstakingly applied himself to the discovery of the truth behind them, and the more marvellous the story, the more he enjoyed the investigation of it. His fame for encyclopedic knowledge was firmly established during his lifetime, and his assistance was frequently sought on scientific or antiquarian inquiries. He was one of few men of his era to have read Dante's 'Inferno,' which was also a source of inspiration to him. Although he professed his anxiety to dispel popular superstitions, he believed in astrology, alchemy, witchcraft, and magic, and the Ptolemaic system of astronomy. An unfortunate practical illustration of his credulity occured in 1664, when Amy Duny and Rose Cullender were being tried as witches. Browne declared 'that the fits were natural, but heightened by the devils cooperating with the malice of the witches, at whose instance he did the villainies,' and he cited some recent similar cases in Denmark. It has been suggested that this comment directly led to a conviction of witchcraft for both women. Keynes [73]

SCHOOTEN, Frans van.
Leiden: Elzevir, 1646. First edition. A very fine copy of this beautiful book concerned with the so-called organic description (or generation) of curves. This was an important topic, since in order to determine the point of intersection of curves in the construction of geometrical solutions, it was natural to think of the curves as generated by a continuous motion driven by some instrument. It is the continuity of the motion generating the curves that guarantees a point of intersection can be located exactly. Descartes had devised several mechanisms for generating curves. In De Organica, which Newton read, van Schooten had presented several mechanisms for generating conic sections. This research field was connected with practical applications, for instance, lens grinding and sundial design, but it was also sanctioned by classical tradition and motivated the highly abstract needs underlined by Descartes. Newton was able to devise a mechanism for generating conics and to extend it to higher-order curves. In this work Schooten gave the now standard method of drawing an ellipse with the piece of string whose ends are attached to two pegs, and it is the first printed work that contains a mechanical description of the ellipsis, parabola and hyperbola without considering them as conics. The book is among the 24 highlights of the Elsevier Heritage Collection. *Honeyman 2807; Macclesfield 873; Willems 607. 4to (208 x 157 mm), contemporary vellum, pp. [16], 117 [3:blank]. Fine and clean, entirely unrestored.

COMMELIN, Isaac (Ed.).
(Amsterdam, Joannes Janssonius), 1646.21 volumes in 2. Oblong 8vo. Contemporary blind-tooled vellum (volume I somewhat bigger and binding cleaned; one side frontcover vol. II sl. damaged). With 2 different engraved frontispieces and 230 engraved maps and plates (some blank margins skilfully restored).* Third and best edition; first published in Amsterdam in 1645. - This rare and extensively illustrated collection of voyages, containing the journals of 21 navigators to the East and West Indies, represents the material for any research on Dutch exploration of trading routes. Isaac Commelin (1598-1676) did manage to get hold of some unpublished accounts which are here printed for the first time, and which he must have obtained, clandestinely or otherwise, from someone connected with the East-India Company. .. about half of the material is completely new, though a few of the other accounts now appear in Dutch for the first time, having been previously printed in some other language (C.R. Boxer in the Introduction to the facsimile edition). As well as the East Indies, there is much material on the Straits of Magellan (since several of the voyages came from the east), and descriptions of a number of significant early visits to the Philippines, China and Japan, India, Mauritius, etc. Among them are the Arctic discoveries of Heemskerk and Barentsz, the East-India voyages of Houtman, de Keyzer and Van Spilbergen, the circumnavigations by Van Noort, Le Maire, Schouten and Van Spilbergen. A very important collection for the history of early Pacific exploration as well as for the devel … [Click Below for Full Description]
