He also was an engraver and publisher. De Fer was the youngest of three sons of Antoine de Fer, who was also a cartographer. When he was 12, he became the apprentice of Parisian engraver Louis Spirinx, and made his first map, of the Canal du Midi, at the age of 23. After the death of his father in June 1673, de Fer was so successful at improving the firm that, in 1690, he became the official geographer to Louis, Dauphin of France. With support from the Spanish and French Royal Families, de Fer also became official geographer for Philip V and Louis XIV, the kings of Spain and France, respectively. Because of this, his maps became Bourbon propaganda, endorsing French King Louis XIV.His business flourished, producing town plans, atlases, wall maps, and more than 600 sheet maps.He made maps of places in Europe and North America, including New Spain, places fortified by Vauban, the Low Countries, and the War of the Spanish Succession. In 1698, de Fer published a map of North America, which included a depiction of beavers building dams near Niagara Falls. Seventeen years later, Herman Moll published an identical map as his own … [Click Below for Full Description]

Antonius Thysius
Leiden: Johannes Maire, 1646. 24mo (11,0 x 5,8 cm). (16), 704 pp. Contemporary full overlapping vellum, spine with handwritten title. In this politicological work, Thysius treats the problem of the best government system by a description of different government systems from antiquity, not only Greek and Roman, but also a.o. Assyrian, Persian, Egyptian &c. Of these, the trait " De potestate Principis " is the most extensive one and considered by Thysius the most important, as indicated on the title. The Protestants of the young Dutch Republic were at the time of publication very much interested in descriptions of antique Republican states, that could serve as models for the modern Republican state. Published with only a typographic title page, without an engraved frontispiece and with first leaf blank. Title page with woodcut printer's mark. Two decorated woodcut initials. Nice contemporary handwritten index on last flyleaf. Leaf A7 with small repaired tear, due to fragile paper; corner first flyleaf torn (repaired). Remarkably fresh copy of a rare work. FLAMSTEED, John.
1646. for Flamsteed's life: DSB V, pp. 22-26. Three astronomical articles (2 in the form of letters) by England's first Royal Astronomer, John Flamsteed (1646-1719) at the Greenwich Observatory from its establishment in 1675, published in the Philosophical Transactions of the British Royal Society in the years 1683 and 1685. The first article gives observations of a 1682 lunar eclipse by Flamsteed himself, Edmund Halley and a certain Haynes. The second gives Flamsteed's calculations of the eclipses of Jupiter's four moons for the coming year 1686, intended in part as an aid to the determination of longitude. The third gives an engraved dial with four scales around its perimeter, with Flamsteed's description of its use to calculate the positions of Jupiter's moons. Flamsteed's magnum opus, his great star catalogue and charts, appeared posthumously in 1725 and 1729, so his most important publications during his own lifetime were a single book in 1680 and a dozen short astronomical articles in the years 1672 to 1686, three of them present here. The articles and plate have been disbound, but they are otherwise in very good condition, with only some minor spots in the text and a couple tears (one repaired). Three of Flamsteed's rare non-posthumous astronomical publications, with an engraved plate of his calculating dial.

BROWNE, Thomas.
London: Printed by T.H. For Edward Dod, and are to be sold in Ivie Lane, 1646. FIRST EDITION. Large octavo, pp. 386. In contemporary full speckled calf, gilt decoration to spine, marbled end papers. Bookplate with Latin motto attached to pastedown. Minute early, professional, near-invisible repairs to the "Envoi". Boards scuffed, hinges starting, spine and corners repaired, foxing to some leaves, heavier in places. A respectable copy. Sir Thomas Browne delighted in the discussion of fables, and painstakingly applied himself to the discovery of the truth behind them, and the more marvellous the story, the more he enjoyed the investigation of it. His fame for encyclopedic knowledge was firmly established during his lifetime, and his assistance was frequently sought on scientific or antiquarian inquiries. He was one of few men of his era to have read Dante's 'Inferno,' which was also a source of inspiration to him. Although he professed his anxiety to dispel popular superstitions, he believed in astrology, alchemy, witchcraft, and magic, and the Ptolemaic system of astronomy. An unfortunate practical illustration of his credulity occured in 1664, when Amy Duny and Rose Cullender were being tried as witches. Browne declared 'that the fits were natural, but heightened by the devils cooperating with the malice of the witches, at whose instance he did the villainies,' and he cited some recent similar cases in Denmark. It has been suggested that this comment directly led to a conviction of witchcraft for both women. Keynes [73].

SCHOOTEN, Frans van.
First edition Leiden: Elzevir, 1646. A very fine copy of this beautiful book concerned with the so-called organic description (or generation) of curves. This was an important topic, since in order to determine the point of intersection of curves in the construction of geometrical solutions, it was natural to think of the curves as generated by a continuous motion driven by some instrument. It is the continuity of the motion generating the curves that guarantees a point of intersection can be located exactly. Descartes had devised several mechanisms for generating curves. In De Organica, which Newton read, van Schooten had presented several mechanisms for generating conic sections. This research field was connected with practical applications, for instance, lens grinding and sundial design, but it was also sanctioned by classical tradition and motivated the highly abstract needs underlined by Descartes. Newton was able to devise a mechanism for generating conics and to extend it to higher-order curves. In this work Schooten gave the now standard method of drawing an ellipse with the piece of string whose ends are attached to two pegs, and it is the first printed work that contains a mechanical description of the ellipsis, parabola and hyperbola without considering them as conics. The book is among the 24 highlights of the Elsevier Heritage Collection. *Honeyman 2807; Macclesfield 873; Willems 607. 4to (208 x 157 mm), contemporary vellum, pp. [16], 117 [3:blank]. Fine and clean, entirely unrestored.

(JOACHIM DE FLORE, abbé) abate GIOACCHINO DA FIORE
in Venetia (Venise), presso Cristoforo Tomasini, 1646, in 4°, de 88pp.

Amsterdam: Jansson, 1646. Engraved map, 185 x 435 mm.; with central fold, in fine condition and mounted. Important early map of the Pacific with insets of the Le Maire Strait and New Guinea from Commelin's compendium of Dutch voyages, Begin Ende Voortgangh. This map comes from the chapter which describes Spilbergen's second voyage to the Moluccas via the Strait of Magellan and the narrative of Le Maire and Schouten's voyage of 1615-1617 to the Australian regions. The momentous Pacific crossing of Le Maire and Schouten was 'the last expedition of the seventeenth century to search for Terra Australis from the east... ' (Schilder). The larger inset shows Le Maire's discoveries along the northern coast of New Guinea, including the detailed voyage track. Of particular interest is the westernmost island depicted, which clearly shows Gilolo. Gilolo or Jailolo, which is situated on Halmahera - the largest island of the Moluccas - was the original home of Giolo, Dampier's "Painted Prince". Giolo and his mother had been captured and sold as slaves at Mindanao to Moody, an English trader. Dampier purchased a half-interest in Giolo, during his trading voyage of 1690 (described in New Voyage round the World, 1697) and returned with him to London.

PISANI, Giovanni Battista
Milan: Per Lodovico Monza, 1646. Hardcover. Near Fine. 8vo [17.1 x 11.1 cm]. (5) ff., 214 pp. (final page erroneously numbered 114). Bound in contemporary vellum, title in ink on spine; minor staining to upper cover, lower cover slightly cockled. Internally very fresh. Very rare first and only edition of a practical handbook of business mathematics by Giovanni Battista Pisani (born circa 1606), who promises on the work's title page to help readers "solve the intricate Labyrinth of mercantile accounting." Pisani - who has an unusual literary touch - dedicates his Giardino aritmetico not to some grand Padrone, but to his brother Francesco, remarking that whereas the Garden of Hesperides had been guarded by a fearsome dragon, his Arithmetical Garden would be open to all who wish to take of its fruits. The small-format volume seems clearly to have been intended as a vademecum for Milanese merchants, and its practicality and portability in the marketplace perhaps account for its low survival rate today. Pisani begins by introducing more than 40 basic mathematical operations (various ways to multiply, divide, and work with fractions) before moving on to more practical matters of currency conversion and exchange, with special emphasis given to the monies of Venice, Naples, Palermo, Rome, and Frankfurt, and to the weights and measures of Milan and Genua. He then provides a list of tariffs relating to Milan trade and some 50 short examples concerning basic monetary operations. The greater part of the volume is given over to more than 250 examples and word problems of increasing … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
