[DAMPIER] SPILBERGEN, Joris van.
Amsterdam: Jansson, 1646. Engraved map, 185 x 435 mm.; with central fold, in fine condition and mounted. Important early map of the Pacific with insets of the Le Maire Strait and New Guinea from Commelin's compendium of Dutch voyages, Begin Ende Voortgangh. This map comes from the chapter which describes Spilbergen's second voyage to the Moluccas via the Strait of Magellan and the narrative of Le Maire and Schouten's voyage of 1615-1617 to the Australian regions. The momentous Pacific crossing of Le Maire and Schouten was 'the last expedition of the seventeenth century to search for Terra Australis from the east... ' (Schilder).The larger inset shows Le Maire's discoveries along the northern coast of New Guinea, including the detailed voyage track. Of particular interest is the westernmost island depicted, which clearly shows Gilolo. Gilolo or Jailolo, which is situated on Halmahera - the largest island of the Moluccas - was the original home of Giolo, Dampier's "Painted Prince". Giolo and his mother had been captured and sold as slaves at Mindanao to Moody, an English trader. Dampier purchased a half-interest in Giolo, during his trading voyage of 1690 (described in New Voyage round the World, 1697) and returned with him to London.

PISANI, Giovanni Battista
Milan: Per Lodovico Monza, 1646. Hardcover. Near Fine. 8vo [17.1 x 11.1 cm]. (5) ff., 214 pp. (final page erroneously numbered 114). Bound in contemporary vellum, title in ink on spine; minor staining to upper cover, lower cover slightly cockled. Internally very fresh. Very rare first and only edition of a practical handbook of business mathematics by Giovanni Battista Pisani (born circa 1606), who promises on the work's title page to help readers "solve the intricate Labyrinth of mercantile accounting." Pisani - who has an unusual literary touch - dedicates his Giardino aritmetico not to some grand Padrone, but to his brother Francesco, remarking that whereas the Garden of Hesperides had been guarded by a fearsome dragon, his Arithmetical Garden would be open to all who wish to take of its fruits. The small-format volume seems clearly to have been intended as a vademecum for Milanese merchants, and its practicality and portability in the marketplace perhaps account for its low survival rate today. Pisani begins by introducing more than 40 basic mathematical operations (various ways to multiply, divide, and work with fractions) before moving on to more practical matters of currency conversion and exchange, with special emphasis given to the monies of Venice, Naples, Palermo, Rome, and Frankfurt, and to the weights and measures of Milan and Genua. He then provides a list of tariffs relating to Milan trade and some 50 short examples concerning basic monetary operations. The greater part of the volume is given over to more than 250 examples and word problems of increasing … [Click Below for Full Description]

Incisione su rame, in ottime condizioni. Rare plan of Porto Longone, also known as Porto Azzurro, on the Island of Elba. Published in Les Glorieuses Conquestes de Louis le Grand - one of the most important works in the 17th century. Shows the bay and the surrounding area in great detail, with mountains, rivers, cliffs, and woods. The battle plan shows the forts, camps and tents, and sailing war ships. Two extensive keys explain the camp and the fortress. With a small inset map showing the entire island and the near Italian mainland coast with the city of Piombino. Copper engraving, in very good condition. Parigi Paris 545 430

GERZAN (François Du Soucy, sieur de);

[Click Below for Full Description]

TURENNE (Henri II de La Tour d'Auvergne, vicomte de ), Maréchal de France. 1611-1675.
[Attributes: Signed Copy]
