Incisione su rame, in ottime condizioni. Rare plan of Porto Longone, also known as Porto Azzurro, on the Island of Elba. Published in Les Glorieuses Conquestes de Louis le Grand - one of the most important works in the 17th century. Shows the bay and the surrounding area in great detail, with mountains, rivers, cliffs, and woods. The battle plan shows the forts, camps and tents, and sailing war ships. Two extensive keys explain the camp and the fortress. With a small inset map showing the entire island and the near Italian mainland coast with the city of Piombino. Copper engraving, in very good condition. Dimensioni 545 430mm

SUCKLING, JOHN
London: Printed [by Ruth Raworth] for Humphrey Moseley [and other imprints], 1646. FIRST EDITION (with title in upper and lower case letters on title page, and Roman numeral title underlined). Offered here in a fine antique (though not a 17th century-style) binding, these "Golden Fragments" comprise all of the significant works of Suckling (1609-42), a dashing Cavalier, ladies' man, and gambler (he is said to have been the inventor of cribbage). Although he raised a troop to support the king in the First Bishops' War, he was accused of treason in a plot to free the Earl of Stafford, and he apparently committed suicide as a result. Although his poetry is not profound, he writes well-crafted short colloquial stanzas, and as a careless and impudent light lyricist, gaily pursuing women and never letting himself get caught, he is extremely good. In addition to his poems, the present collection contains, among other things, Suckling's letters to important personages as well as three dramatic works. Nearly all of the several portions making up the text were printed for Moseley by one of two women, Susan Islip or Ruth Raworth. Almost all of the items appearing here are printed for the first time. The retrospective binding by the distinguished Riviere firm is skillfully executed in the style of Roger Payne. The panel design and floral sprays on the covers and the dense tooling on the spine compartments are very like those on a binding in the Henry Davis Gift (Foot, Vol. II, 192) executed by Payne ca. 1790. In the manner of late 19th century bibliophiles' copies, the present item see … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition. An arcane debate about excommunication and whether it was lawfully possible (so far as Church jurisdiction was concerned) to excommunicate without at the same time barring those so suspended from other 'publick Ordinances' such as 'prayer, preaching, reading, fasting, catechising, singing of psalmes, baptizing of infants, &c.'. ASSARINO, Luca.
In Venetia, per li Turrini. 1646 [16], 292 [ie 192]. 12mo. Old waterstain visible on original coarse grain paper wrappers, not intrusive in text. Hand-lettered backstrip, sl. worn.Unrecorded by Copac, which only notes editions of 1642 and 1654 (although another was published in Turin also in 1646). Assarino, 1602–72, was a Genoese writer, probably born in Potosì in Bolivia, who led a turbulent life as a political informer, with several spells in prison. He compiled Il Sincero, the first Italian newspaper, and historical works, such as Delle rivoluzioni di Catalogna (1644) and Delle Guerre e Successi d'Italia (1662). His extremely successful novels included La Stratonica (1635), which was translated into French, English, and German, and L'Almerinda (1640), later expanded and completely reworked in I Giuochi di Fortuna (1655).
