Corona gothica, Castellana, Y Austriaca. Politcamente ilustrada. Parte primera. Dedicada al principe de las Espanas nuestro senor.

      - Munster [Amsterdam], Juan Jansonio, 1646. 4:o. (20),+ 514 s. Lättare lager- och småfläckar, en fuktfläck sid. 59-60 och fläckar sid. 446-447 och 467-468. Kraftigare fuktrand från sid. 473 och framåt. Nött samtida skinnband, guldornerad rygg med upphöjda bind, pärmarna med förgyllda dubbla ramlinjer, röda stänsksnitt. Ryggen litet trasig upptill. Warmholtz 1376. Carlander II, 597f & III, 568ff.

By Thomas Browne Dr. of Physick. London, Printed by T.H. for Edward Dod, and are To be sold in Ivie Lane, 1646. F?'cap folio (so watermarked); license leaf present, but without the final blank; text printed within line border throughout; large historiated initial on A3, woodcut initials elsewhere, and head-pieces of type ornaments; pp.[xx (not paginated)]+386; a6, b, A - T, V, X - Z, Aa - Ii, Kk - Tt, Vv, Xx - Zz, Aaa4, Bbb5 (ex 6); nineteenth century polished calf ruled gilt, tooled blind, at borders, gilt tooled edges, neatly re-backed with matching calf, ruled and tooled gilt on spines, red lettering-piece; matching oil-marbled edges and end-papers, the end-papers strengthened with linen at the gutters. Small split in a1 (not touching printed area) unobtrusively strengthened, and small hole in blank upper margin of a2 neatly almost invisibly repaired with matching paper (both being original paper flaws); small hole in T3 due to an original paper flaw, with loss of one letter on each side of the leaf; quarter inch chip to extreme blank lower margin of F3; otherwise an excellent, clean, copy with good margins. Wing, B5159; Grolier 107; Wellcome II, p.253; Keynes [73B]; NCBEL, I, 2230. There is an alternative 1646 imprint [73A] with the printer?'s name in full and with no address, which Keynes reports as ?'less usual?' and ?'likely to be the earlier?'. The rest of the title-page was printed from the same setting, ?'so the change was probably made while the book was in the press.?' The present copy has the wrong catchword on A6v (?'THE?' instead of ?'A?') and p.317 misnumbered 217, apparently as always. The first edition of Browne?'s most famous and substantial work in which he applies his brilliant scientific mind to a wealth of common misconceptions, at the same time providing a fascinating account of popular superstition and tradition. The book, which came to be known as Browne?'s ?'Vulgar Errors?', was the result of many years of experimental investigation, and, written in an extravagant style described by Johnson in his Life as ?"a tissue of many languages; a mixture of heterogeneous words, brought together from distant regions, with terms appropriated to one art, and drawn by violence into the sevice of another?", it also provides for the modern reader an ?"inexhaustible store of entertainment?" - (D.N.B.). Browne?'s complaint against the science of the day was that it turned its back on nature and relied on tradition. ?'Intellectual acquisition?', he wrote in his introductory address To the Reader, ?'is but a reminiscential evocation, and new impressions but the colouring of old stamps which stood pale in the soul before.?' He addressed his accusations of ?'vulgar error?', not to the ignorant, but ?'the knowing and leading part of Learning?' with the hope that he might awaken an intellectual conscience in them. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated.

Pseudodoxia epidemica: Or, enquiries into very many received tenents . . .

      T. H. For Edward Dod, London 1646 - Browne, Thomas (1605-1682). Pseudodoxia epidemica: or, enquiries into very many received tenents, and commonly presumed truths. Folio. [20], 386pp. Lacking final blank. London: T.H. for Edward Dod, 1646. 272 x 178 mm. 19th century calf, with arms of Sir William Stirling-Maxwell (1818-78) on front and back covers, some wear at spine and edges. Margin of first leaf expertly repaired, tear in title also repaired, title a bit soiled, but a very good copy. Stirling-Maxwell’s very large armorial bookplate inside front cover. First Edition, second state, with the imprint as above. In his second and largest work, often referred to as "Browne’s Vulgar Errors," Browne drew upon his many years of reading, observation and experimental investigation to refute popular misconceptions in the fields of history, folklore, science, philology, natural history, medicine and embryology. Browne conducted numerous experiments in physics, comparative anatomy and biology, many of which were reported in Pseudodoxia epidemica; he also coined the term "electricity" (first printed here) to describe certain electromagnetic phenomena. "Except in matters of religious faith, [Browne] was unwilling to accept anything without carefully examining it in the light of such facts as he could gather. He has thus expressed himself regarding his own attitude: ‘In philosophy, where truth seems double-faced, there is no man more paradoxical than myself, but in divinity, I love to keep to the road’" (Keynes, p. 51). This copy displays the probable second state of the title, with the imprint reading "Printed by T.H. for Edward Dod, and are to be sold in Ivie Lane." The probable first state, which is scarcer, has the imprint reading "Printed by Tho. Harper for Edvvard Dod." Keynes, Thomas Browne, 73B. Norman 358. Wing B-5159. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Thaumaturgus opticus

Bon exemplaire.         Commentaria in primam fen primi libri canonis Avicennae 2nd ed

Venice: Marc-Antonio Brogiollo, 1646. Santorio, Santorio (1561-1636). Commentaria in primam fen primi libri canonis Avicennae. 4to. [40]pp., 1120 columns. Woodcut illustrations. Venice: Marco Antonio Brogiollo, 1646. 233 x 166 mm. 18th century quarter vellum, marbled boards, minor rubbing and edgewear. Very good copy. Occasional marginal marks in red pencil, marginal note (cropped) on Q3v. Third edition of Santorio?s commentary on the first book of Avicenna?s Canon, first published in folio in 1625. Santorio, professor of theoretical medicine at the University of Padua, introduced the use of precision instruments for quantitative biological studies; he is regarded as the founder of metabolic research. Using himself as a subject, Santorio conducted a long series of experiments with a scale and pulse-clock, a thermometer and other instruments to measure such metabolic phenomena as pulse rate, respiration, body temperature and the daily variations in the weight of his body relative to ingestion and excretion. He determined that most excretion takes place invisibly through the skin, proved that this invisible excretion could be measured by systematic weighing, and showed that the rate of excretion varied considerably as a function of both physiological and environmental factors. The 1625 edition of Santorio?s Commentaria contained the first illustrations of several of his instruments, including a hygrometer, a pendulum for measuring pulse rate, a syringe for extracting bladder stones, and a bathing bed; these illustrations are repeated in the 1646 edition. The work also revealed for the first time the principles of construction of these instruments, which had been invented many years before. Garrison-Morton.com 2668 (first ed.). Norman 1893 (first ed.).

Pierre Mariette, Paris 1646 - Map of the Turkish Empire centered on Arabia covering from the Caspian Sea to the horn of Africa. Fine detail throughout with cities, mountains, rivers and forests rendered. Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667) is considered the founder of the French school of cartography. In reaction to the prevailing trend of Dutch lavishness, Sanson favored minimal details, focusing rather on accurate cartography than ornament. Pierre Mariette, the elder, was a bookseller, printseller and publisher who worked closely with Sanson. Hand colored title cartouche. Map was framed at one time with the outer margins showing stains from verso tape residue, still a lovely version of this hard-to-find map. Map. Engraving with original outline color.         Herbarum imagines vivae. Der Kreuter lebliche Conterfeytunge. Including: Imaginum herbarum, pars II. Andertheyl der Kreutter Conterfeytungenn.Frankfurt am Main, Christian Egenolff, (colophon: 1536). 2 parts in 1 volume. 4to. With 2 title-pages, part 1 with 225 botanical woodcuts (plus 5 repeats on the title-page), part 2 with a woodcut view on the title-page and 63 botanical woodcuts (plus 3 repeats on the title-page). All woodcuts coloured by a contemporary hand. Interleaved with contemporary paper. Tanned sheepskin (ca. 1700?), gold-tooled spine, in modern red clamshell box.

Adams H293; BMC NH, p. 513; Nissen, BBI 2344; VD16, H2196. Very rare first edition (part 1 in the 2nd issue) of a Renaissance woodcut herbal, showing a wide variety of herbs and flowers, fruits, berries, nuts and root vegetables. Nearly every illustration shows the entire plant, including roots, but a few (such as the walnut) show only a detail. With one to four woodcuts on each page. The illustrations have their origins in the extremely accurate and beautiful botanical woodcuts on a larger scale drawn and cut by Hans Weiditz, whose work has often been mistaken for Dürer's or Burgkmair's. The only texts besides the title-pages and indexes for each part are the names of the plants in Latin and German for nearly every woodcut. This and the smaller format probably made the book affordable to many who could not have purchased Schott's edition of Brunfels, but it also made it a handy field guide rather than a book that would remain on a scholar's shelf, making all editions and issues very rare today. With some contemporary and later manuscript notes, and a 1646 owner's inscription. With 1 tear slightly affecting the names of 1 plant and some marginal stains, not affecting the illustrations, but still in good condition. The colouring has sometimes bled through the page faintly. The owner's inscription on the title-page was shaved by the binder. Binding shabby.

WENZEL HOLLAR - ALBRECHT DÜRER: Jungfrau mit offenem Haar - Woman with unloosened hair (after Dürer): Quid virgo sparsis.

      - This finely engraved copper engraving by Wenzel Hollar from 1646 is based on a Renaissance painting by a Nuremberg artist and one of the most famous German painters Albrecht Durer. The portrait shows a young woman with loose hair, looking downwards, holding her hands in a prayer. Durer’s monogram shows at a neutral background as well as a coat of arms of a noble family Furleger from Nuremberg. The original painting named "Women with Unloosened Hair", today in the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, probably represents Katharina Furleger, who was posing for Durer twice, also for a pendant version of this portrait. The other possibility is that Durer painted two sisters from the same family. The young woman on the other portrait has her hair pulled up in a neat Renaissance style. Durer painted the young Katharina Furleger as a Virgin Mary, what resembles his autoportrait painting himself with christomorphic features. VáclavHollar: Restoration England’s Greatest Engraver Václav Hollar (1607 – 1677), also known as Wenceslaus (in English) or Wenzel (in German) Hollar, was born in Prague, the capital of Bohemia in 1607, into a bourgeois Protestant family. At the time of his birth, Prague was perhaps the greatest artistic center in Europe, due to the extravagant patronage of Emperor Rudolf II, who sponsored many of the continent’s greatest artists to reside in the city. However, by the time of Václav’s adolescence, Prague and indeed all of Bohemia, was being ravaged by the Thirty Years’ War (1618-48). The fortunes of his family were ruined and his plans to become a lawyer were doomed owing to his Protestant faith in a country now governed by Catholic zealots. Hollar learned drawing, etching and engraving as a gentlemanly hobby, but in light of his new circumstances and his natural talent, became a professional artist. While Hollar developed his own distinct style, he was very much influenced by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer. Many of his finest achievements are interpretations of Dürer’s works, including Women with Unloosened Hair (1646). Hollar moved to the Stuttgart area in 1627, before continuing on to Strasbourg. By 1633, he was in Cologne. In 1636, that city, Hollar had the great fortune to encounter Thomas Howard, the 21st Earl of Arundel, who was on his way down the Rhine, returning to England from an embassy to Vienna. Arundel was perhaps the greatest contemporary English connoisseur of the visual arts and, amazed by the young Czech’s awesome talent, he immediately invited him to join his entourage as his official artist. By 1637, Hollar had relocated to England, and while he executed many assignments for Arundel, he was still free to pursue commissions from other patrons. Shortly after his arrival in England, Hollar engraved a View of Greenwich, a massive panorama of the Thames port town featuring Inigo Jones’s pioneering work edifice, the Queen’s House. Upon Arundel’s hasty departure from England (due to political reasons), Hollar switched to the employ of the Duke of York. While the advent of the English Civil War (1642-8) ensured many new commissions, it also led to great financial troubles for Hollar, as many of his clients proved unable to pay the promised fees. His etching Civilis Seditio (1643) is considered to be on of the most evocative images epitomizing the internecine conflict. Hollar was eventually compelled to relocate to Antwerp, where his best-known work was the magnificent view, the Cathedral of Our Lady (1649). Hollar returned to London in 1652. Upon the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Hollar found himself in difficult position. While he was apolitical and had many connections with leading Royalists, he was also close to some prominent members of Cromwell’s late administration. While no outward punitive action was taken, Royalist officials suspected him of being disloyal and ungrateful to the king’s court and thus for years Hollar had great difficulty gaining commissions from the crown or the hig

[MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT, SIGNED BY THE EARL OF WARWICKE AND FOUR OTHERS, ADDRESSED TO THE COMMISSIONERS OF THE ROYAL NAVY]

[England], 1646. Folio. Old fold lines. Some light soiling and wear. Very good. Manuscript document signed by Robert Rich, the second Earl of Warwick, who was commander of the British Navy and a promoter of the American colonies. In this memorandum, addressed to the Commissioners of His Majesty's Navy, the Committee of Lords and Commons for the Admiralty and Cinque Ports recommends that one John Coxe be made gunner on the ship the John. It is signed by Robert Rich ("Warwicke"), Dudley North, John Rolle, John Trevor, and Alexander Berne. Robert Rich (1587-1658) was an important English political figure in the 17th century. Involved in Parliament, he also held command of the Royal Navy and was involved in several colonial American ventures. After failing to persuade the original Puritan "pilgrims" to settle in Guiana, Rich, as a member of the Council for New England, secured for John Peirce the patent on which the Plymouth colony existed for the first eight years. He likewise signed the second patent for William Bradford in 1630 and was instrumental in the patent for the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was also involved in privateering and several settlement schemes along the Central American coast and in the West Indies. His signature is rare.
