Chez Claude Bonjan, Paris, 1644. In-12 de 8-148 -(4) pp., veau havane glac?, dos lisse orn?, pi?ce de titre en mroquin vert, tranches rouges (reli? vers 1800). Edition originale. Note manuscrite en regard du titre : ? COORNHERT, DIRCK VOLKERTSZOON - SENECA, LUCIUS ANNEUS.
't Amsterdam, By Jan Fredericksz Stam, 1644. Title within nice engraved ornamental border. 153 unnumbered pages + 3 blanks. 12mo. Contemporary overlapping vellum, handwritten title to spine. Muller 344 ("Fraai drukje van Matthys Perfect"); Scheepers ii, 365; De Vries 343. Second edition of this Dutch translation of Seneca's De Beneficiis. Important work by Seneca the Younger, born in Cordoba (Spain). De Beneficiis deals with themes of an ethical nature, within a context pertaining to concerns with regards to political leadership. As such, the work is concerned with the lives of aristocrats, and the nature of their relationships. This concern is of the form of and etiquette of bond-formation between persons by the giving and exchanging of gifts or services (favors), and is prescriptive of the way in which the aristocrats might behave, for the good of ancient Roman society. The translator, Dirck Volckertszoon Coornhert (1522 - 29 October 1590), also known as Theodore Cornhert, was a Dutch writer, philosopher, translator, politician, theologian and artist. Coornhert is often considered the Father of Dutch Renaissance scholarship. - On the last leaf, colophon: Ter Goude, By Matthijs Perfect, 1644.

Some early provenance is evident; the title page is inscribed in a 17th century hand by “Carlo Bulgarini” possibly the nobleman Carlo Bulgarini of Mantua (d. 1685) whose family was known to have prolific book collections in Italy and France; most famously is the library of his grandfather Bellisario Bulgarini, circa 1560 to 1660. Pictorial bookplate of Kirby Flower Smith (1862-1918), professor of Latin and humanistic studies at Johns Hopkins University, on front pastedown. Latin editions of the Apuleian Roman verse satire, the Metamorphoses, were some of the earliest works to be printed at the dawn of the print age. In 1518, Io. Zoppino and his compagno published the first edition of Matteo Maria Boiardo’s Italian translation made from the authoritative manuscript at the Monastery of Monte Cassino. The Metamorphoses was reprinted several times over the 16th and 17th centuries; appearing here in 1644 in Italian after the translation of the Bolognese patrician, Pompeo Vizani. It gives an almost 'blow-by-blow description of the campaigns in Brazil from 1630 to the end of 1636, inserting a wealth of geographical and other information about that country. He also gives an excellent account of the preliminary operations of the West India Company from 1621 to 1630, so this work really comprises a history of that organization from its origin to the end of the year 1636' (Boxer, The Dutch in Brazil, p.293). Matthaeus Merian 1644 [but ca. 1660], [Frankfurt am Main]. 311 x 210 mm. (12 1/4 x 8 1/4"). 38, [2], 39-84 pp., [4] leaves. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary stiff vellum, holes for ties (now missing). With engraved title page, TWO FOLDING MAPS, AND 52 PLATES (40 double-page, mounted on stubs) SHOWING 91 VIEWS. Front free endpaper with early ink owner's signature; occasional early ink marginalia. Wüthrich IV,108, no. 19; Brunet V, 1529-30; Graesse VI, 509. Vellum somewhat soiled, but the binding entirely sound and very satisfactory. Not infrequent but always faint browning to margins, a hint of soiling or foxing here and there, other minor defects, but still an excellent copy internally, generally clean, rather fresh, and with strong impressions of the plates. Written, like a number of Merian books, by the German school official and miscellaneous author Zeiller (1589-1661), this beautifully illustrated publication is part of the splendid and justly celebrated "Topographia" series of books initiated by Merian (1593-1650) and continued by his heirs to a grand total of some 30 folio volumes, issued between 1642-88. The profusely illustrated works are of primary importance for the knowledge of Central European topography of the baroque era, and it is of great interest because of the very considerable artistic value of its engravings. Graesse notes that volumes (like the present one) covering Germany are especially valued for the accuracy of the illustrations, representing the country very much as it was at the time the books were produced. Graesse notes that volumes (like the present one) covering Germany are especially valued for the accuracy of the illustrations, representing the country very much as it was at the time the books were produced. The present volume covers Bavaria, one of the loveliest parts of Germany. According to Wüthrich, Merian the Elder engraved most of the plates here himself, including some of the most beautiful in the series: "the Vogelschau and the Steinerne Brücke of Regensburg, Neuburg on the Danube, Passau, Landshut, and the market square at Munich"--the latter still recognizable to the modern tourist. The title page bears the date of 1644, though the actual publication date was at least 10 years later. Ours is the first printing of the work, without the appendix that would be added to a later, 132-page edition (still with title page dated 1644). The plates here are executed with considerable skill and charm, with the artist including de … [Click Below for Full Description]

Donne, John
London: John Dawson, 1644. First edition, first issue, with the leaves of "Authors cited in this booke." Contemporary full calf with the initial blank (generally found missing), a well done rebacking, rubbed along the hinges, title page browned, the other pages only browned primarily at the margins. All in all a very good and more importantly complete copy. Ex-libris University of Cambridge***** "Biathanatos was written during a lengthy period of unemployment, during which Donne suffered from low spirits. In 1608, around the time that Biathanatos was originally composed, Donne wrote to his friend Henry Goodyer, 'Every Tuesday I make account that I turn a great hourglass, and consider that a week's life is run out since I writ. But if I ask myself what I have done in the last watch, or would do in the next, I can say nothing.' Polycarp, Saint, Bp. of Smyrna; & Ignatius, Saint, Bp. of Antioch.
Oxoniae: Excudebat Leonardus Lichfield Academiae Typographus, 1644. 4to (21.5 cm; 8.5"). cxlvi, [1], 243, [2], 53 pp. Controversies have stages and the Ignatian Controversy had three. In the period from the first printing of the Ignatian letters (1495) till 1644, the Longer Greek recension was all that was known and it was accepted despite early awareness of some spurious aspects. => The second stage began with the publication of the present work in which Bishop Ussher printed the letters based on the Shorter Greek recension as found in Latin manuscripts in Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and in the private collection of Robert Montagu — the Greek text for which was soon found and published two years later. The final stage came in 1845 with the discovery of the Syrian “extract.”    The texts of the Epistles of Polycarp and Ignatius are here presented in parallel columns, in the Greek of the Longer recension and in Robert Grosseteste's mid-13th-century Latin translation. Ignatius' Greek text is printed in red and black; red for words and passages not appearing in the Latin version reproduced on pp. 195–238, and, in the "Emendanda," for words and passages not appearing in the Greek text on pp. 239–41.    Besides editing and translating the letters, Irish-born Ussher provides notes and an essay, “De Ignatii Martyris Epistolis, indeque . . . de Polycarpi quoque scriptis, atque Apostolicis Constitutionibus et Canonibus Clementi Romano tributis,” at the end of the volume.    The ESTC record indicates that a portion of this work was salvaged from an edition of Ignatii, Poly … [Click Below for Full Description]

Barclay, John.
Amsterdam, Johann Jansson, 1644. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
