LINSCHOTEN, Jan Huygen van.
Amsterdam, Everhardt Cloppenburch, 1644.3 volumes in 1. Folio. Contemporary blindtooled vellum with ties, hinges skillfully repaired, in slipcase. With 3 engraved titles, engraved portrait and 42 double-page or folding maps and plates, all handcoloured. (12),160; 147; 82,(8) pp.First published in 1595-1596. - Van Linschoten (1563-1611) obtained first-hand information on the Portuguese routes to Africa and Asia during his voyages to East Asia as a clerk of the newly appointed Portuguese archbishop of Goa, the capital of Portuguese India. After his return in his hometown Enkhuizen in 1592, the publication of his navigational data was a crucial element in breaking the 16th-century monopoly enjoyed by the Portuguese in the East-Indian trade and the subsequent successes of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Van Linschoten's Itinerario played a crucial role in shaping the picture that the Dutch had of Asia around 1600 (Zandvliet, The Dutch encounter with Asia 1600-1950, p.15). Linschoten's books are partly a compilation of information collected from Portuguese and Spanish documents, and partly the result of personal experience.They had considerable success and were used for a century as a guide for navigators of all nations (Borba de Moraes I, p.490). - 'Linschoten's work may be considered either a description of the Portuguese East by an interested outsider or the first of the great Dutch works which helped to stimulate the early Dutch voyages to the East' (Lach p.182). The first part, Itinerarium, relates Linschoten's experiences during more than a decade in the East Indies. I … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pietro TESTA detto "Il Lucchesino" (Lucca 1611 - Roma 1650)
Bibliografia: Bartsch 31; Bellini 25 III/IV. Dimensioni 425x390. Etching, 1644, signed on lower centre plate. Example in the third state of four, published by Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi. Excellent work, printed on contemporary laid paper with "double circle and fleur-de-lis" watermark, small margins, small tears perfectly repaired on upper part, in very good condition. Testa realized this work to pay homage to the brand-new pope Innocenzo X Pamphili, who was succeeding Urbano VIII in 1644. The composition has been realized around the bust of the new pope, surrounded by putti celebrating Peace; one of them offers a laurel wreath to the god Tiber … [Click Below for Full Description]

Belmonte, Moses (translation by)
Amsterdam: Yshak de Cordova, 5466. Fifth printing. Hardcover. poor to g-. 16mo. 3.5x6". 167pp. (missing final page). Original brown calf boards. The book is a complete Spanish-language translation of the biblical book Song of Songs (Song of Solomon), and Perkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers), the famed collection Jewish ethical sayings taken from the Talmud. Both of these works feature Moses Belmonte's translations, which had been printed in Amsterdam since 1644. Pages 1-91 contain Song of Songs and 92-167 contain the text of Perkei Avot. As stated in the preface, this is the "Quinta Imprension" (Fifith printing) of the work, based on Belmonte's translation and that it was printed for the congregation of Rabbi Jacob de Mesa, in Amsterdam. Title page bordered with a decorative woodblock motif. Decorative head and endpeices at the beginning and end of sections. Some of the translated text of Perkei Avot contains numerous in-text hand-corrections and Hebrew marginal notes in ink, from the period. Text in Spanish, with passages in Hebrew and some Ladino. Amsterdam, 1644. Three parts bound in one volume. [8],160,[8],13- 147,[90]pp. Three engraved titlepages, portrait of Linschoten, and thirty (of thirty-six) double-page plates (several folding), all in handsome original color. Folio. Old boards, skillfully rebacked in calf, retaining original leather labels. Some marginal waterstaining, some browning to text leaves, plates clean, one plate trimmed. Overall very good. Lacks the maps. A later edition of one of the great classics of early travel literature, originally issued in 1596. This is the best account for that era of the sailing routes to the East Indies and the Portuguese establishments in India, the Spice Islands, and southeast Asia. From the time of its publication until the end of the next century, Linschoten was an essential aid to navigators in the east Indies, and his book made him "the leading geographical figure in Renaissance Holland" (Penrose). Linschoten wrote three separate works, the first being described above. The three are always found together, although they have separate titlepages and paginations in all editions. The second section, entitled REYS- GHESCHRIFT VAN DE NAVIGATIEN DER PORTUGALOYSERS IN ORIENTEN...ALS OOK VAN DE GANTSCHE CUSTEN VAN BRASILIEN...ITEM VAN'T VASTE LAND ENN DIE VOOR EYLANDEN LAS ANTILAS GHENAEMT, VAN SPAENSCH INDIEN, provides sailing directions for the East Indies, as well as for Brazil and the West Indies. Martial; Jacques Auguste de Thou
Condition: Very Good. Book in Latin. Amsterdam, 1644. This book is bound in whole light brown calf with a fully decorate back with the monogram I.A.G. in each panel, and with the sides perfectly plain excepting for the coat of arms of de Thou in the centre of each side. The monogram I.A.G. on the back is composed of the combined initials of his mother and father and the arms on the side are those of the de Thou family.was the most celebrated patron of binding during the last part of the 16th century. Son of Christophe de Thou, first President of the Parliament of Paris, he inherited from him a valuable library, containing several books bound for Grolier, which the latter had presented to Christophe, in gratitude for having saved his life and honour. Jacques Auguste was President of the Parliament under Henry IV, a position his son held after him. He had a library of 8, 000 volumes bound in variety of styles. It included Fanfare bindings of the late period in which the spirals were profuse and the foliage elaborate and delicate; the dotted work of Le Gascon in his early days; fawn-colored calf, ornamented with plain gold lines; white vellum stamped with arms; and, most numerous of all, books covered in moroccos, red, olive, and citron, perfectly plain except for his fine cost of arms. RIPA CESARE & BAUDOUIN JEAN
[Click Below for Full Description]

It also contains the first recorded patch-test for allergy; the fullest early account in English of teaching lip-reading; and material on conditioning anticipating Pavlov." Jan Commelin or Joannes Commelijn (1629-1692), his name is spelled in different ways, was a famous botanist and the director of the Hortus Medicus in Amsterdam at a period when it was undergoing substantial enlargement, primarily as a result of plant introduction from the Dutch East and West Indies and South Africa. This in turn was the result of the enterprise of the Dutch Indies Company. Many of the plants described were the first specimens introduced in Europe. J. Commelin was the author of the first volume of the 'Horti Medici Amstelodamensis rariorum tam Orientalis, quam Occidentalis Indiae, aliarumque peregrinarum plantarum...'. dealing with plants of the East and West Indies./A very large, clean and beautifully bound copy of the last and most augmented edition of this monumental Dutch herbal, with additions by Joost van Ravelingen. BILLAUT, Adam;
[Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
