TASSO, Torquato
P. Serassi. La vita di Torquato Tasso, p. 253. In folio (cm. 40); legatura in piena pelle del ?700 a 6 nervi con fregi in oro, antiporta; pp. (12), 502. Manca l?ultima carta bianca. Axs

Girolamo Donzellini,1644,lovely leather,1st
Good. VERY RARE, ORIGINAL 1644 PRINTING OF PRINCIPUM ET ILLUSTRIUM VIRORUM EPISTOLAE. This scarce, 17th Century treatise was edited by Girolamo Donzellini and printed by the legendary Elzevir (also Elsevier) press, Amsterdam, Holland. Loveley leather binding with bookplate of 7th Earl FitzWilliam, County Tyrone. Venetian Girolamo Donzellini (c. 1527-1587) was a 16th Century physician with a reputation as one of the most erudite scholars of his time. The famous Elzevir family of Dutch booksellers, publishers, and printers were best known for their editions of the classics. This desirable text is among the rarest Elzevir first editions. Fascinating work contains a collection of important letters of Aristotle, Alexander the Great, the Kings of England and France, early Popes, and Italian humanists. This impressive compilation reflected the views and opinions of some of history's greatest thinkers, on many prominent political and philosophical issues. Notably, text is dedicated to Erik Oxenstierna, the son of the famous Swedish chancellor Axel Oxenstierna. Rare book remains in good condition. Volume attractively bound in contemporary calf (leather) with decorative spine, cover shows some wear, hinges cracking yet holding firm, old bookplate, front blank leaf torn, light foxing though generally clean internally. All in all, rare treatise remains very presentable. Volume numbers 432-pages with separate preliminaries and rear index, and measures approx 3" x 5" x 1 1/4" thick.

DIGBY, KENELME. - [A LANDMARK OF 17TH CENTURY NATURAL SCIENCE]
Paris, Gilles Blaizot, 1644. Folio. A lovely later green full calf binding with six raised bands, gilt ornamentations and gilt leather title-label to spine. Gilt frames to boards and all edges of boards gilt. All edges gilt. Title-page a bit dusty, with old owner's name, and with a neat repair to blank margin (from verso). A very nice copy indeed. The book constitutes a landmark work of 17th century natural science, "It is the first fully developed expression of atomism or corpuscular theory, the first important defense of Harvey on the circulation in English; a modern presentation of the nervous system predating Descartes; and a ground-breaking work in embryology. It also contains the first recorded patch-test for allergy; the fullest early account in English of teaching lip-reading; and material on conditioning anticipating Pavlov." (Rubin and Huston, Digby, a Bibliography, p. 12).After having lost his wife in 1633, the English-born natural philosopher and occult scientist, Kenelm Digby (1603-1665), had settled in France, where he came into contact with Hobbes and Mersenne and came to know Descartes, whom he visited in Holland, and whom he corresponded with. Digby was an early member of the Royal Society … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lambarde, William
Lambarde's first work, and only the second printed in Old English with Anglo-Saxon type, first published in 1568, in the words of Felix Liebermann crediting Lambarde as "a pioneer in an unknown land", as he translated the Anglo-Saxon laws into Latin. Contemporary calf, rubbed, the joints cracking but firm, a good copy; with a bifolium laid in discussing degrees of honor and titles; the Taussig copy. Ex Officina Rogeri Daniel, celeberrimae Academiae [etc.], Cantabrigiae, 1644.

THEOPHRASTUS
Finely engraved title-page (a trifle shaved at outer edge) & 675 woodcuts in the text. 11 p.l. (incl. engr. title), 1187 (i.e. 1185), [87] pp. Folio, cont. Dutch vellum over boards (upper joint with small split of 70 mm. at foot, minor pale dampstaining to first twenty leaves & last third of book), panelled in blind, central arabesque in blind to each cover, ties gone. Amsterdam: H. Laurentius, 1644. First edition to be edited by Joannes Bodaeus à Stapel; it "is one of the best and most thoughtfully prepared of all the editions of Theophrastos."-Hunt 240. H.H. Bartlett wrote in his Fifty-five Rare Books (Ann Arbor: 1949) of this edition: "It is interesting not only because of the brilliance of the editing, but, curiously enough, to the American botanist as well, for involving in the discussion certain species from Virginia, other parts of the New World, and Asia. The illustrations of these plants have been largely overlooked in botanical history, because of their incidental presence in a work which might not be expected to contain anything of the sort. Some were merely borrowed from l'Escluse or de Lobel, but others seem to be original in this work." A fine and crisp copy. Bookplate of Piergiorgio Borio, M.D. ❧ D.S.B., XIII, pp. 328-334. [Attributes: First Edition]

I Stephanius' kommentarbind træsnit af runestene, prospekter m.m. 4to. (8) + 384 + (22) + 60 + 252 + (22) s. Engraved titlepage showing Christian IV and the author et al. In Stephanius' commentary vol. are woodcuts of runes, prospects etc. Nice copy, weakly marked of age, bound in contemporary full vellum with handwritten authors' name on spine.. [Click Below for Full Description]
