Nineteenth-century purple morocco, covers gilt with a wide foliate border roll, spine gilt in six compartments with red morocco labels, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Housed in a dark blue cloth flat back box made by the Chelsea Bindery. Extremities rubbed, a few scattered rust-spots, lacking blanks 1 and Ee2, an excellent copy. Large-paper presentation copy, with a letter of transmittal by John Donne the Younger to John Marckham bound in. Donne's letter is dated from Covent Garden, 6 October 1647, and is directed "For his much honored friende Mr John Marckham": "I have sent you this booke, according to my promise but my inclination to send you, I make account, is above that. If by anie discourse of mine it might seeme otherwise to you, my words betrayed my intention, which is, very much to bee Sr, your most humble Servant Jo: Donne." An early exercise in learned casuistry intended for a strictly limited circle of readers, Biathanatos was published posthumously by Donne's son and literary executor. "Caught between his father's injunction that the manuscript should be spared 'both the Presse and the Fire', Donne the younger eventually opted for publication, rather than the deliberate annihilation of the fire or the accidental damage of time and chance, remarking that the work was in equal danger of being 'utterly lost' and 'utterly found'" ( … [Click Below for Full Description]

Desmarets de St.-Sorlin, Jean.
Leiden, Frantz Heger, 1644. Polycarp, Saint, Bp. of Smyrna; & Ignatius, Saint, Bp. of Antioch.
Excudebat Leonardus Lichfield Academiae Typographus. Controversies have stages and the Ignatian Controversy had three. In the period from the first printing of the Ignatian letters (1495) till 1644, the Longer Greek recension was all that was known and it was accepted despite early awareness of some spurious aspects. => The second stage began with the publication of the present work in which Bishop Ussher printed the letters based on the Shorter Greek recension as found in Latin manuscripts in Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and in the private collection of Robert Montagu -- the Greek text for which was soon found and published two years later. The final stage came in 1845 with the discovery of the Syrian "extract." The texts of the Epistles of Polycarp and Ignatius are here presented in parallel columns, in the Greek of the Longer recension and in Robert Grosseteste's mid-13th-century Latin translation. Ignatius' Greek text is printed in red and black; red for words and passages not appearing in the Latin version reproduced on pp. 195-238, and, in the "Emendanda," for words and passages not appearing in the Greek text on pp. 239-41. Besides editing and translating the letters, Irish-born Ussher provides notes and an essay, "De Ignatii Martyris Epistolis, indeque . . . de Polycarpi quoque scriptis, atque Apostolicis Constitutionibus et Canonibus Clementi Romano tributis," at the end of the volume. The ESTC record indicates that a portion of this work was salvaged from an edition of Ignatii, Polycarpi, et Barnabæ, epistolae atq[ue], martyria quibus praefixa es … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tiguri: Joh. Jacobi Bodmeri 4to (20.7 cm, 8.1"). [20], 116 pp.. 1644 [with the same author's] Dissertatio historico-theologica de heptaplis parisiensibus ex pentateucho ita instituta.... Tiguri: Joh. Jacobi Bodmeri, 1649. 4to. [40] pp. First edition of this important treatise on the Samaritan Pentateuch, written by a Swiss-born Orientalist and author of a number of well-respected works on theology and philology. Here he rebuts the assertions of Jean Morin, who had edited the de Sancy manuscript, regarding the origins, antiquity, and authority of the Samaritan text. The main work concludes with Hottinger's "Epitome capitum libri Josuae" and is followed by the related "Dissertatio historico-theologica de Heptaplis Parisiensibus . . . ," the latter also in its first edition, with a separate title-page dated 1649. Recent speckled paper–covered boards, front cover with printed paper label. Some very faint waterstaining and light spotting, mostly confined to margins; in fact, nice and clean.

LILLY, Will[iam]
London printed for T.V. and are to be sold by I.S. in Little Brittaine. 4to., 16pp., with two large zodiacal text figures, generally a little spotted and browned, upper margin of title cut close, but with no loss of letters, errata slip pasted over blank foot of last page, bound in mid-19th century black half roan gilt, rather worn. A pretty good copy with the 19th century armorial bookplate of Sir William Grace, Baronet.> First edition. 1644 saw the beginning of Lilly's long series of pamphlets of prophecy. In the present, his astrological predictions were vague but portentously gloomy. 'Upon a suddaine and unexpected accident, the dissipation and dissolving of some misterious close consultation and mischievous plot against our State and Common-wealth is portended; the disunion and disagreement of the projectors amongst themselves, and all this is forraigne parts as well as in England: a renting in peeces or mutinous disturbance of some monarchy neare hand, or some Austrian family or Principality, &c. A commotion of the meanest sort of people against some principall man, or majistracy: Losse to Spaine; That we English with our Armies shall travers all the in land countries of this Kingdom, &c. This is all I either can or dare say. M.L.' 1644 marked the third phase of the English Civil War, with victories for the Royalists at Copredy Bridge and Lostwithiel and a major defeat at Marston Moor. Lilly's populist predictions and pseudo-scientific prognostications sold like hot-cakes. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Linschoten, Jan Huygen van
Amsterdam, 1644. Three parts bound in one volume. [8],160,[8],13- 147,[90]pp. Three engraved titlepages, portrait of Linschoten, and thirty (of thirty-six) double-page plates (several folding), all in handsome original color. Folio. Old boards, skillfully rebacked in calf, retaining original leather labels. Some marginal waterstaining, some browning to text leaves, plates clean, one plate trimmed. Overall very good. Lacks the maps. A later edition of one of the great classics of early travel literature, originally issued in 1596. The first part, the ITINERARIUM..., relates Linschoten's experiences during more than a decade in the East Indies before returning to Holland to write his book. This is the best account for that era of the sailing routes to the East Indies and the Portuguese establishments in India, the Spice Islands, and southeast Asia. From the time of its publication until the end of the next century, Linschoten was an essential aid to navigators in the east Indies, and his book made him "the leading geographical figure in Renaissance Holland" (Penrose). Linschoten wrote three separate works, the first being described above. The three are always found together, although they have separate titlepages and paginations in all editions. The second section, entitled REYS- GHESCHRIFT VAN DE NAVIGATIEN DER PORTUGALOYSERS IN ORIENTEN...ALS OOK VAN DE GANTSCHE CUSTEN VAN BRASILIEN...ITEM VAN'T VASTE LAND ENN DIE VOOR EYLANDEN LAS ANTILAS GHENAEMT, VAN SPAENSCH INDIEN, provides sailing directions for the East Indies, as well as for Brazil and the West Indies. [Click Below for Full Description]

Le Maistre, Antoine
No place [Port Royal]: No publisher/printer 8vo (15.5 cm; 6.25"). 2 parts in 1 vol. 106 pp., [7] ff., 199, [1] pp., [3] ff.. 1644 Port Royal and Jansenism are synonymous in the history of France in the 1630s and 1640s. Various members of the related Le Maistre and Arnauld families, including Antoine Le Maistre, were drawn to Port Royal for religious or spiritual reasons, Antoine's translation there from Paris having been due to his attraction to the teachings of Jean Du Vergier de Hauranne (abbé de Saint-Cyran) who had introduced Jansenism into France. Le Maistre (1608–58) gave up a promising and young legal career, for he was not yet 30. Despite his youth, he had attracted the attention of Cardinal Richelieu who did not take kindly to his defection; almost coincidental with Le MaistreÂ’s arrival in Port Royal was Jean Du Vergier de HauranneÂ’s arrest and imprisonment at the cardinalÂ’s instigation. The present work, published after Du VergierÂ’s death in 1643, defends him against attacks by Jesuit writers. This is the second edition, published the same year as the first. This edition in 8vo format, the first having been in 4to. Evidence of readership: Early underlining, a few marginal notes, and other notes on blank pages. Searches of WorldCat and COPAC locate two copies in the U.S. and three in Britain. All located copies are in 4to format. Contemporary vellum over paste boards, a significant piece of vellum missing from spine (i.e., missing for a long, long time). 19th-century bookplate, light staining here and there, some age-toning; some soot-soiling to top edge and … [Click Below for Full Description]
