HOLLAR, WENCESLAUS].
s.l. ¿London?: Sold by Thomas Ienner, -, 1644. Portada, 6 mapas plegados (43,5 x 49-54 cm.) (30,5 x 50 el mapa 6º); 22 x 8,5 cm. La encuadernacion. Encuadernación en piel de época. Buen estado. An extremely utilitarian object, virtually lacking in decoration, Hollar’s copy was advertised as ‘Useful for all Com[m]anders for Quarteringe of Souldiers & all sorts of Persons would be informed, Where the Armies be’ and it became known as the ‘Quartermaster’s Map’ (Wenceslaus Hollar as a map-maker) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Browne, Thomas)
Keynes, A Bibliography of Sir Thomas Brown, 1968, Nr. 61; Carter/Muir, Bücher die die Welt verändern, 1968, Nr. 131. Dritte lateinische Ausgabe. "The 'Religio Medici' was a puzzle to his contemporaries . A Latin translation appeared at Leyden in 1644, and it was widely read on the Continent, being translated subsequently into Dutch, French and German. In Rome the book was placed on the 'Index Expurgatorius'" (The Encyclopaedia Britannica, 4, 1929, p.269). [Click Below for Full Description]

Willem Jansz BLAEU (1571-1638).
Copper engraving (Very Good, pale signs of old brown annotations) cm (21 x 15.5 inches). - Amsterdam [circa 1644]. This is a scarce second state of Bleau's map of Persia, with an empty catouche on the left-hand side. This is a rare state of Willem Jansz Bleau's map of Persia with an empty cartouche. The text in it was erased for the second state, his patron Theodoro Tholing, went bankrupt and fled Amsterdam. After 1662, the dedication was updated and dedicated to Simon van Hoorn. The Blaeu Family: The Leading Cartographers of the 17th Century - Willem Jansz Blaeu (1571-1638) was, more than any other figure, responsible for the ascension of Dutch cartography to a globally dominant position. Blaeu, originally from Alkmaar, north of Amsterdam, got his start while serving as an apprentice to the legendary Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe at his observatory of Uranienborg, from 1594 to 1596. Upon Willem’s return to the Netherlands, he started a business making charts, globes and nautical instruments. His timing was impeccable, as the Dutch economy, based on maritime trade, was booming and there was an insatiable demand for high quality sea charts and nautical kit. Notably, in 1596, the Dutch made their first voyage to the East Indies, which led the establishment of the Dutch East India Company in 1602. The VOC would be one of Blaeu’s anchor clients and in 1633 he was appointed the Company’s official hydrographer. Blaeu’s sea atlas of European waters, Het Licht der Zee-vaert (1608) was revolutionary, being the first broadly accurate maritime atlas. He went on to … [Click Below for Full Description]
