A brilliant mathematician, Torricelli was Galileo's assistant and companion during the last two years of the elder scientist's life, and he succeeded Galileo in the post of grand ducal mathematician. In his Opera Geometrica, published at the expense of Grand-Duke Ferdinand II, Torricelli elucidated and diffused the difficult geometry of Cavalieri (see lot 359), thereby gaining himself widespread recognition throughout Europe. The first part, compiled around 1641, 'studies figures arising through rotation of a regular polygon inscribed in or circumscribed about a circle around one of its axes of symmetry... Torricelli... classifies such rotation solids into six kinds, studies their properties, and presents some new propositions and new metrical relations for the round bodies of elementary geometry... As Torricelli acquired increasing familiarity with the method of indivisibles, he reached the point of surpassing the master - as Cavalieri himself said' (DSB). In the second section, De moto gravium, Torricelli continued Galileo's study of the parabolic motion of projectiles. The treatise includes several significant contributions to mechanics, the calculus and ballistics. It also 'refers to the movement of water in a paragraph so important that Ernst Mach proclaimed Torricelli the founder of hydrodynamics' (DSB). This states 'Torricelli's theorem' in which Torricelli determined that the efflux velocity of a jet of liquid spurting from a small hole at the bottom of a vessel is equal to that which a single drop of the liquid would have if it could fall freely in a vacuum from the level of the top of the liquid. Fine.

Provenance: two old library stamps to title-page. A fine, untouched copy. ----Norman 622; Guibert, p. 118; Tchemerzine II, p. 787; NLM/Krivatsy 9512. - FIRST EDITION OF DESCARTES' SYSTEM OF PHYSICS, in which he developed his theory of vortices. Based in part on his then unpublished work Le monde, which treated the creation and function of the universe in completely mechanistic terms, Descartes' Principia provides a systematic statement of his metaphysics and natural philosophy. The first part, De principiis cognitionis humanae (Of the Principles of Human Knowledge) deals with the nature of motion, rest, force, and action. He defines motion in Book II and distinguishes the difference between translation and 'the force that brings about this translation.' Descartes was careful in the Principia to qualify his mechanistic Copernican views with the idea that all motion is relative."His vortical theory allowed him to argue that since the earth is at rest in its surrounding medium it remains unmoved, although it, together with its entire vortex, necessarily circles the sun" (Norman). Descartes' system represents a truly comprehensive look at the universe in a fundamentally new, mechanistic and non-teleological way. His vortex theory was the starting point for all serious work in physical theory in the mid-17th century, including Newton. The fourth and final part of the work contains the first scientific theory of magnetism. Very Good.

First edition of the French translation, translated by François Bachou from the Gemmarum et lapidarum historia (1609) of the Flemish doctor and naturalist Anselm de Boodt. The work has 45 woodcut illustrations in text and retains the two folding plates showing the "Division of Precious & Common Stones." Retaining also the errata leaf, often missing.Contemporary red morocco. Richly gilt spine in five compartments, evidently 18th century title-piece in light brown morocco. Triple gilt fillet frame to covers and gilt fleurons to corners. Gilt dentelle surrounding the inside of covers, all edges gilt.Headpiece slightly rubbed, three corners a little bumped. First published right at the beginning of the 17th century, in 1609, it is both treatise and manual. Anselm de Boodt describes and writes about no fewer than 106 minerals and gems, and proposes a system of classification for them (hardness, composition, color, clarity). He relies not only on Classical sources (Pliny's Natural History, the Materia Medica of Dioscorides, Galen's Simple Medicines and Alberto Magno's De Mineralibus), but also the fruit of Renaissance research (by Césalpin, Gessner, Scaliger, and so on), and spends some time explaining the virtues of each stone, be they medical, magical, or otherOne will also find in this remarkable work practical information on the size of stones and how to spot fakes, a summary of mineralogical knowledge at the time, and an inventory of mineral substances used in healing (with a justification for their use). There are, in addition, useful tips for jewelers, naturalists and doctors. A useful index of all the stones covered is provided at the beginning of the work.  Chez Jean-Antoine Huguetan A Lyon 1644 in-8 (11x17,5cm) (1f. tit.) (5p. épit.) (3p. préf.) (4p. avert.) (3p.) Important for containing literal extracts from Desargues' Brouillon Projet, the work also contains the first printed reference to 'La Pasqualle', the mystic hexagram, published in 1640 by the sixteen year-old Pascal in a broadside of which only one copy survives. Desargues' most important work, which constitutes the birth of modern projective geometry, was Brouillon projet d'une atteinte aux événemens des rencontres du Cone avec un Plan. "The Brouillon Projet on conics, of which he published fifty copies in 1639, is a daring projective presentation of the theory of conic sections; although considered at first in three-dimensional space, as plane sections of a cone of revolution, these curves are in fact studied as plane perspective figures by means of involution, a transformation that holds a place of distinction in the series of demonstrations" (DSB IV 47). Desargues intended his work to appeal not only to theoreticians but also practical men, and this perhaps explains his use of an original vocabulary which, however, made the pamphlet very difficult to read. It exerted little influence at the time, and disappeared from view (in fact, it was thought to be lost until a copy was found in 1951). Nevertheless, its methods formed the basis of the new techniques of projective geometry developed in the nineteenth century by Poncelet and his followers. "In August 1640, Desargues published, again under the general title Brouillon Projet, an essay on techniques of stone-cutting and gnomonics. While refining certain points of his method of perspective presented in 1636 [in a pamphlet now lost], he gives an example of a new graphical method... In attempting thus to improve the graphical procedures employed by many technicians, Desargues was in fact attacking an area of activity governed by the laws of the trade guilds; he also drew the open hostility of those who were attached to the old methods and felt they were being injured by his preference for theory rather than practice" (ibid.) One of these technicians was Curabelle, who published in the present work a violent attack on Desargues' methods, "finding nothing in them but mediocrity, errors, plagiarism and information of no practical use" (ibid.). Desargues replied with a pamphlet defending his work, to which Curabelle responded with Foiblesse pitoyable. This experience so affected Desargues that he published virtually no scientific work after 1644, turning instead to a career in architecture. In Oeuvres de Desargues (II, 389), Poudra notes that the Foiblesse pitoyable is bound at the end of the Examen and, because of its rarity, transcribes it in full. For a detailed account of Desargues' work, see J V Field and J J Gray, The geometrical work of Girard Desargues, 1987. Macclesfield 581 (this copy); Arnaud de Vitry 165; Vagnetti EIIIb39. 4to (285 x 206 mm), pp [1-2] 3-81 [1:blank] with 16 engravings printed in the text (several full-page); pp 9 [1] with an engraving printed on one page, 18th century vallum-backed blue paper boards (calf spine showing under the vellum which is cracking), lower inner corner of the first eight pages with some damage (but not affecting the printing area).         Flower Song Texts by Bash . Autograph musical sketchleaf containing numerous melodic and harmonic ideas tied to textual fragments based on Bash 's poems. Signed by the composer

The present composition is not included in the works list on Thomas's website. Bash (1644-1694) was an Edo-period Japanese haiku poet. "The music of Augusta Read Thomas (b. 1964) is majestic, it is elegant, it is lyrical, it is "boldly considered music that celebrates the sound of the instruments and reaffirms the vitality of orchestral music" (Philadelphia Inquirer). Her deeply personal music is guided by her particular sense of musical form, rhythm, timbre, and harmony. But given this individuality, her music is affected by history — in Thomas's words, "Old music deserves new music and new music needs old music." For Thomas, this means cherishing her place within the musical tradition and giving credit to those who have forged the musical paths she follows and from which she innovates. "You can hear the perfumes of my metaphorical grandparents," Thomas states. "There is a wonderful tradition that I adore, I understand, and care about, but I have my two feet facing forward." Thomas's vision toward the future, her understanding of the present, and her respect for the past is evident in her art. Most striking in her music, however, is its exquisite humanity and poetry of the soul. The notion that music takes over where words cease is hardly more true than in her musical voice." "Born in Glen Cove, New York, Thomas was appointed University Professor of Composition at the University of Chicago in 2011. University Professors are selected for internationally recognized eminence in their fields as well as for their potential for high impact across the University. Thomas will become the 16th person ever to hold a University Professorship, and the fifth currently at the University. Additionally, she was the Mead Composer-in-Residence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) from May 1997 through June 2006, a residency that culminated in the premiere of Astral Canticle — one of two finalists for the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in Music. During her residency with the CSO, under the direction of Daniel Barenboim, Thomas not only premiered nine commissioned works, but also founded, along with Cliff Colnot, and curated the MusicNOW series. In addition to Barenboim, Thomas's music has been championed by other leading conductors including Pierre Boulez, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Oliver Knussen, Seiji Ozawa, Mstislav Rostropovich, Leonard Slatkin, David Robertson, Christoph Eschenbach, Ludovic Morlot, and Xian Zhang. Her music has been commissioned by leading ensembles and organizations around the world including: Love Songs (Chanticleer); Chanting to Paradise (NDR [German Radio] Orchestra); Song in Sorrow (The Cleveland Orchestra); Orbital Beacons, Aurora, In My Sky at Twilight, Ceremonial, Carillon Sky, Words of the Sea, Trainwork, Tangle, and Astral Canticle (Chicago Symphony Orchestra); Prayer Bells (Pittsburgh Symphony); Bells Ring Summer (La Jolla Chamber Music Society); Galaxy Dances, and Cello Concerto (National Symphony); Violin Concerto (Radio France and the BBC Orchestra); Helios Choros I (Dallas Symphony); Helios Choros II (London and Boston Symphony Orchestras); Helios Choros III (Orchestre de Paris); Pulsar (BBC); Terpsichore's Dream (Utah Symphony); Canticle Weaving (Los Angeles Philharmonic); and Cantos for Slava (ASCAP Foundation)." "From 1993 to 2001, Thomas was an assistant professor, then associate professor of composition at the Eastman School of Music, and from 2001 until 2006 she was the Wyatt Professor of Music at Northwestern University. In 2007-2008, Thomas was a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Music in the Division of the Humanities at the University of Chicago. Frequently, Thomas undertakes short-term residencies in colleges, universities, and festivals across the United States and in Europe." "Thomas studied composition with Jacob Druckman at Yale University, with Alan Stout and Bill Karlins at Northwestern University, and at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She was a Junior Fellow in the Society of Fellows at Harvard University (1991-94) and a Bunting Fellow at Radcliffe College (1990-91), and often teaches composition at Tanglewood. Thomas has also been on the Board of Directors of the American Music Center since 2000, as well as on the boards and advisory boards of several chamber music groups." "In addition to the numerous commercial recordings of her music available on major record labels, Thomas has released five of her own albums independently." musicsalesclassical.com/composer/long-bio/Augusta-Read-Thomas, December 2013. Large folio, ca. 430 x 278 mm. Notated in various coloured inks. Small irregularly cut sheet, ca. 217 x 70 mm., attached to left edge with printed poetical text annotated by the composer. With autograph titling and notes regarding commissioning, performers, etc., to upper portion of leaf.         The Bible, that is, the Holy Scriptvres contained in the Old and New Testament. Translated according to the Hebrew and Greek, and conferred with the best translations in divers languages. With most profitable annotations upon all the hard places, and other things of great importance.

"Probably the latest [i.e., last] seventeenth-century issue of the Geneva Bible" (Herbert). The New Testament is Laurence Tomson's translation of Theodore Beze's Greek N.T. while the O.T. is significantly based on that of earlier translations by => William Tyndale and Myles Coverdale. The elaborate commentary in the form of marginal glosses (i.e., annotations) is the work of Laurence Tomson and owes much to L'Oiseleur's notes on the Gospels and Epistles. Also present are Franciscus Junius' notes on Revelation. This edition is a close reprinting of the same printer's 1640 edition which "seems to be the earliest example of an English Bible which deliberately omits the Apocrypha from the list of books" (Darlow and Moule). It is printed in double-column format in roman type. It has => two full-page copper-plate etched illustrations. Other illustrations are woodcuts and include maps, a vignette of the crossing of the Red Sea (on title-page), and an ornament of a female head between two cornucopiae (on the N.T. title-page). Woodcut decorative initials and head- and tailpieces adorn the text nicely. Searches of NUC and WorldCat locate only eight U.S. libraries reporting ownership.

Tagli spruzzati. Jahrhundert in Taxa bestehende Kloster Maria Stern.
