Horace (auteur) ; Nicolas Poussin (artiste) ; Claude Mellan (graveur),
1642. Notre blog : https://librairie-trois-plumes.blogspot.fr/ Notre mail : benoit@troisplumes.fr Horace (auteur) ; Nicolas Poussin (artiste) ; Claude Mellan (graveur), Quinti Horatii Flacci Opera. Parisiis [Paris], Typographia Regia [Imprimerie Royale], 1642. In-folio (39.5*27.5cm), [4]-321p.

HORNIUS (HORN), Georgius.
Ad 1: Alden & Landis 652/111; Borba de Moraes, p. 413; Sabin 33014; ad 2: V.d. Linde, David Joris 242; STCN (7 copies). The first edition of a learned essay on the origins of the American Indians. It was a reply to Grotius who had argued in 1642 that the American Indians were descendants of Norsemen, Ethiopians and Chinese, basing his theory mainly on linguistic arguments. Hornius criticized Grotius's philological approach and placed the origins of the American peoples in Scythia, Phoenicia, Carthage and China. The work is bound with Blesdijk's famous biography of the Anabaptist leader David Joris, edited by Jacobus Revius. It remains the most important source for the life and teaching of David Joris.Fine copies. With minor surface defects in the vellum, but binding still very good.

Israel SILVESTRE
Acquaforte, 1642, firmata in lastra in basso. Molto rara. Etching, 1642, signed on lower plate. Beautiful work, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to platemark, perfectly executed repairs at the upper right center, otherwise in very good condition. Panoramic and uncommon view of the city, from the slopes of Mount Mario. The Basilica in the foreground has been depicted in detail, as is the view of the city, where many buildings can be identified. Silvestre was drawer and engraver; he was born in Nancy in 1621. Between 1638 and 1641 Silvestre travelled along Italy and there are many evidences of his presence in the Peninsula between 1643 and 165 … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Africa] Basan, Alvaro de
First edition. Rare imprint -one of two known copies-, with news of the capture, and looting of Carte (Oran, originally taken by Spanish forces in 1509); the imprint provides details of the Muslims who inhabit the region, populated mostly by "Xarifes Morabitos"; whom, according to the writer, descend directly from Mahoma, are reputed to be braver than common, and to have troubled the forces at Oran for long enough. Near Oran -where Spanish forces settled-, the Turks fortified a city called Carte, which made the Spanish restless, for the strategic military location of it. The core of the relation details the battle and military actions as that of Salomon Zaporta "de los primeros que entro en el lugar, y mato a un Moro cuerpo a cuerpo", and the exposition of Luis de Cervantes, who entered the place, securing it, and making sure there was no "Moor" alive. We could find copies at the Biblioteca Nacional de España. Palau, 258248.

Fei, 1642. Edizione originale.
First edition, extremely rare, containing the first printing of Fermat's method of maxima and minima and method of tangents, which he developed in the 1630s. "It is primarily on the strength of this method and the applications which he developed for it that Fermat has been declared the inventor of the calculus by Lagrange, Laplace and Tannery among others" (Baron, p. 167). It was from this work of Hérigone that many of the leading scientists of the time, including Huygens, Leibniz, Newton, and Wallis, learned Fermat's important methods, long before their appearance in Fermat's Varia Opera Mathematica, posthumously published in 1679. Arguably the greatest French mathematician of the seventeenth century (Descartes and Pascal notwithstanding), Pierre de Fermat (1601-65), was "the father of the modern theory of numbers and herald of differential calculus" (Grolier/Horblit). "Independently of Descartes, Fermat discovered the fundamental principle of analytic geometry. His methods for finding tangents to curves and their maximum and minimum points led him to be regarded as the inventor of the differential calculus. Through his correspondence with Blaise Pascal he was a co-founder of the theory of probability" (Britannica). Fermat was reluctant to allow any of his work to appear in print, and only two short works were published in his lifetime. "Hérigone added his note on Fermat's tangent method at Mersenne's suggestion in the 1642 Supplementum to his Cursus Mathematicus (5 vols., Paris, 1634-7), issuing it with the main text of the Cursus only in the … [Click Below for Full Description]
