LOUBÈRE, Simon de la.
Rare third edition (only two copies listed in the STCN) of a comprehensive work on the history of the kingdom of Siam, "universally regarded as the finest work on seventeenth-century Thailand" (Wyatt). The French diplomat Simon de La Loubère (1642-1729) was appointed as Louis XIV's envoy extraordinary to the court of Siam, and while he stayed in Siam for only three months he diligently and systemically asked questions, "probably stimulated by the Jesuit scientists who accompanied the mission to take more than a passing interest in Siamese cosmology, astronomy, and mathematics" (Lach & Van Kley). Each title-page with library stamp and unobtrusive inscriptions, some browning and spotting. The bindings worn and the back hinge of volume 2 cracked. Overall in good condition.Cordier, Indosinica, col. 722; Lust 113; STCN (2 copies); cf. Lach & Van Kley III, pp. 1194-1196; Wyatt, "Introduction" in: A new historical relation of the Kingdom of Siam (1966).

1642. Numerous woodcuts, many full-page, in the text. 2 p.l., 27, 11, 26; 20, 21, 24 folding leaves. Six parts in two vols. Oblong 8vo, orig. blue wrappers, manuscript title labels on upper covers (the label on Vol. I is largely worn away), new stitching. [Kyoto?]: most of the parts end with the date 1642.First edition of this rare collection of early gastronomic texts from the Shijo school of hocho shiki. It was the oldest school of the special imperial knife ceremony and describes rituals in which the chef carves fish and poultry using a special kitchen knife and metal chopsticks, without once touching the flesh with his hands. "Unlike the modern steak house chef who is a vaudeville version of a short-order cook, medieval chefs who performed knife ceremonies were not ordinary chefs: they were at the top of their occupation, employed only by the military and aristocratic elite...The Shijo [school] traced their genealogy back to a branch house - appropriately called the 'fish name branch' - of the northern branch of the Fujiwara family, which dominated government during much of the Heian period."-Rath, Food and Fantasy in Early Modern Japan, pp. 40-41This book collects and prints six earlier texts, all of which remained in manuscript until being printed here for the first time:Vol. I:1. "Sanjuroku no Koi" ("36 Ways to Cut Up Carp").2. "Choshi richu" ("How to Serve Sake with Carp").3. "Ryori shitsuke sho" ("Recipes & Etiquette").Vol. II:4. GOODWIN, John
London: Printed by R.O. and G.D. and are to be sold by Andrew Crooke, 1642. 1642 1ed PURITAN Goodwin Treatise Justification English Civil War anti RoyalistJohn Goodwin was a 17th-century English preacher who wrote several theological treatises during the English Civil War. One of his earliest work was 'Imputatio Fidei' or 'A Treatise on Justification'. This work was, for more than a century, considered to be on the short list of works that were the best to cover the subject of justification. (Coffey). 'Treatise' was well-known to uphold the Protestant principles and values that were established by the Reformation - in fact, there is much speculation that this work was responsible for many of the 'anti-Cavalier' or 'anti-Royalist' platforms. This 1642 first edition was published the same year as the onset of the English Civil War. It was faced with both popularity and scrutiny, but its popularity lasted until the start of the 19th-century. John Wesley famously edited it with the intention of combating Calvinism and antinomianism. "Third" edition of the second English translation (by the encyclopaedist Ephraim Chambers) of one of the most influential handbooks of perspective ever published: Le perspective practique (Paris, 1642) by the Jesuit mathematician Jean Dubreuil (1602-1670). "Probably the most influential [work on perspective] ever published expressly for the use of a lay audience" (Millard), it is clearly and thoroughly illustrated with 150 full-page engravings printed from the original plates of the 1672 English edition, which were copied in mirror image from the original 1642 edition, plus 2 folding plates illustrating Hodgson's essay. It was especially important in England, where Robert Pricke published a translation already in 1672 and Chambers published the present improved translation in 1726. The title-page describes it as "highly necessary for painters, engravers, architects, embroiderers, statuaries, jewellers, tapestry-workers, and others concerned in designing." The 1739 edition introduced the present 16-page essay on the theory of perspective by James Hodgson, a fellow of the Royal Society and one of England's leading mathematicians, as well as the two folding plates that accompany it. With 19th-century owners' inscriptions at the head of the title-page: "J.G. Poole Southampton 1841" (struck through) and "... Bartlett Worthing" (initial unclear). LOUBÈRE, Simon de la.
[8], 436, [2]; [4], 324, [1], [1 blank] pp.Second edition, published in the same years as the first, of a comprehensive work on the history of the kingdom of Siam, "Universally regarded as the finest work on seventeenth-century Thailand" (Wyatt). Loubère compensated his short stay with a thorough study of earlier writers, referring to twenty-three European authors from Pinto to Gervaise in the first volume and collecting French translations of native works in the second. Besides presenting information on Siam itself, Loubère also incorporates information on India and China and their influence on Siam's past. With the armorial bookplate of Anton Ernst Burckhard van Birckenstein (active 1686-1744) on paste-down. Parisiis [Paris], Typographia Regia [Imprimerie Royale], 1642. In-folio (39.5*27.5cm), [4]-321p.

ERASMUS, of Rotterdam
Lugduni Batavorum: officina Joannis Maire, 1642. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "When I have a little money, I buy books; and if I have any left, I buy food and clothes." ― Erasmus While mostly known for involvement in the Northern Renaissance, Erasmus of Rotterdam published several works on humanism and Protestant theology. Beginning in 1642, publisher Joannis Maire sought to publish an entire series of the works of Erasmus. This work, 'Vita', was the first of this series. This work and the letters therein is a reissue of the 1615 edition that was edited by the famous Dutch scholar Pieter Schrijver. 'Vita' itself is a collection of smaller works including: · Erasmus's 'Autobiography' · Beatus Rhenanus 'Biography' of Erasmus · Erasmus's last will and testament · A plethora of letters written by Erasmus to Lambertus Grunnius, Hector Deidonanus, Christophorus Messia Hispanus, Conradus Goclenius, Mutianus Rufus, Joannes de Hondt, Oecolampadius, Petrus Vulcanius, and Helius Eobanus Hessus. This example, curiously, features both the 1642 and 1649 editions of Maire's printing of Erasmus's letters.
