This work on the Sepher Yetzirah (Sefer Yezir and various other spellings) or "Book of Formation", perhaps the oldest Rabbinical treatise of Kabalistic philosophy which is still extant, originates possibly from as early as the third centuiry AD. The first Latin translation was made by Guillaume Postel and published in Paris in 1552; a second translation by Johannes Pistorius was published in the In Tomas Primus of "Artis Cabalisticae" in Basle in 1587. Rittangel (1606 - 1652) was Professor of Hebrew at the University of Konigsberg and his version is the first … [Click Below for Full Description]

Leitao, Francisco de Andrada
Lisbon, 1642. Protest against the actions of the Dutch Admiral Corneliszon Jol in Africa and Brazil. 1642. Lisbon. Antonio Alvarez. In 4to (190 mm x 140). 6 ff. Modern marbled boards, leather label on upper board. Some light damp staining, overall fine.First edition in Portuguese. The work was translated from "Copia primae allegationis ... legatus ad ... ordines generales Foederati Belgij" (Hague, 1642). Andrada Leitão protests against the activities of Admiral Cornelius Corneliszon Jol (also known as Pé de Pau) and other attacks on Portuguese possessions by the Dutch, in violation of the ten-year peace treaties between their country and Portugal signed in 1641 and 1642. He mentions specifically the fleet under Jol that went to Angola and S. Thomé, and the activities of the same Admiral in Maranhão and Pernambuco. He also argues that the newly independent kingdom of Portugal should not be treated as a vassal of Spain, with whom the Dutch were at war.Andrade Leitão (d. 1655) was chosen to pronounce an oration at D. João IV's coronation in 1640, and became so trusted by D. João that he was appointed Ambassador Plenipotentiary to England and then to Holland. He also went as Ambassador Plenipotentiary to the peace congress at Munster and Osnaburg in Westphalia.Borba de Moraes (1983) I, 464 ("rare"). Innocencio II, 334 ("raros e estimados"). Rodrigues, Dominio holandes, 618. J.C. Rodrigues 179 ("raro"). Sabin 39940.

Semedo, Alvaro
Madrid, 1642. An influential Jesuit Priest in China; rare first edition in Spanish. 1642. Madrid. Juan Sanchez. In 8vo (190 mm x 136 mm). 8 ff. + 362[368] + 3 ff. Contemporary calf, raised bands to spine, compartments in gilt and with red lettering piece, upper and lower compartments larger than usual, some rubbing. Title page with inscription partially erased and with other ownership inscription "Don Silvestre de Prado", a few headlines just touched by the binder?s cropping, foxing and damp here and there as always for the paper used, few scattered worm holes ?mainly marginal-, else fine.First edition in Spanish, after the original Portuguese (1641); this edition is remarkably rare, as is the Portuguese. It was submitted to translations into German, Latin and English ("The history of that great and renowned monarchy", 1655). This work constitutes one of the best sources of information on China of the 17th century. Semedo, a keen observer, included information on its inhabitants and their ethnography, military affairs, manners, daily life, religious inclinations of the Chinese, their worship, progress of the Society of Jesus in the Empire, short notes on the fauna, military costumes, and culinary notes as that of ff. 97, providing a culinary and table-manners explanation of China, differentiating the visitor, details the lack of forks and knifes (substitued) by sticks, and makes an intriguing observation, of the lack of spices at the table, even though they have many "ni sal, ni pimienta; si vinagre, i mostaza, i otros apetitos, que los tienen varios, i excelentes".Semedo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Besler, M. R.
. [Nueremberg], 1642. Folio (34.3 x 22.5 cm). Engraved title page and 33 (of 34) engraved plates. Later blind paper binding.* Very rare first edition of natural history objects and antiques in the Wunderkammer of the brothers Basil (1561-1629) and Hieronymus (1566-1632) Besler. This "proto-museum" was inherited and enriched by Basil's nephew, the Neuremberg physician and pharmacist Michael Rupert Besler (1607-1661). This 'treasury of natural things from the vegetable, animal, and mineral kingdoms' contains birds, shells (some delicately carved), corals, minerals, and typical Wunderkammer artefacts such as a unicorn horn, several 'Arcimboldo' grotesque of shells, antique coins and pretty polished marble slabs, along with such unica as the sword of the Bohemian knight Johann Zisca (c.1378-1424; leader of the Hussites). Many rare plants and birds are figured, along with ethnographic objects such as a Brazilian Indian girdle made from the nuts of the Brazilian tree Cerbera ahovai. The image of this plate was used for the border of Valentini's Museum museorum (Frankfurt 1714). Besler was a in Nuremberg, was a virtuoso scholar-collector, and also assembled an important collection of art and antiquities. These plates were reissued in 1716, and 1733. In this first edition there is no further text, other than the (sometimes extensive) plate captions. This copy is printed on blue proof paper, and before letters and numbers. Only the last plate bound in is on white paper. This is plate 13 in copies with numbering. Plate 14, with the intestines of the wolf, is lacking. This suggests th … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Pallavicino, Ferrante].
"Cambrai" (but Venice), 1642.. 12mo. (153) pp., final blank f. Marbled half calf (c. 1780) with giltstamped spine labels and floral endpapers. All edges sprinkled in red.. Almost unobtainable first edition of the author's most notorious work: "Prima ediz. stamp. colla falsa data di Cambrai nel 1642" (Libr. Vinciana, p. 21). The "libro piu pornografico e piu aretinesco del '600" (Q. Marini, P. Aretino nel '600, in: P. Aretino nel cinquecentenario della nascita, p. 486). "The Rhetoric of Whores", a scandalous anti-Jesuit work, "demonstrates why Pallavicino was the only Italian author of his epoch capable of a coherent vision that integrated satire, skepticism, and naturalistic morality" (Muir, Culture Wars [Cambridge: Harvard, 2007], p. 90). The book is written in the form of a dialogue between an aged prostitute and her naive apprentice. The fifteen lessons of the old whore were based on Cipriano Suarez's "De arte rhetorica", the manual used in Jesuit schools. Muir pointedly notes, "By systematically pursuing the parallels between rhetorical persuasion and erotic seduction, Pallavicino demonstrates how the high art of rhetoric has the same instrumental character as the lowly deceptions of the prostitute." - Some browning throughout. Prettily bound; removed from the Nadasdy library with stamp on title page. Exceedingly rare: no copy in auction records internationally; the earliest recorded copy sold in 1960 (another false "Cambrai" imprint, but dated 1644). - BL (Italian Books) 647. OCLC 65523066. Cf. Grotius, Hugo, Philosoph und Rechtsgelehrter (1583-1645).
Paris, 28. III. 1642.. ½ S. auf Doppelblatt. 4to. Mit eh. Adresse und Siegelspur (Faltbrief). Gerahmt hinter Glas.. XI. 1961, Nr. 353).

Guerreiro, Bartolomeo
A primary source for the early experiences of the Jesuits in the East Indies and Brazil. 1642. Lisbon. Antonio Alvarez. In folio (278 mm x 185 mm). 6 ff. ?including full page coat of arms- + 736 + 7 ff. Borba de Moraes calls for 8 ff. of prelims ?not 6, as here-, however he appears to be the only one who does, quite possibly a variant. Contemporary limp vellum, a little soiled, ties lacking, entirely original condition. Some toning throughout as always for the paper used, generally good, genuine copy with its first binding.First edition. An important work on the Jesuit works in Brazil, Japan and the East Indies. It is rich in information and contains much detail on the life and apostolic missions of Jesuit missionaries in South East Asia, becoming one of the first and more substantial works on the subject. The section on Japan and South East Asia occupies roughly half of Guerreiro?s work. He opens with a description of Japanese history, geography, and customs and a commentary on the relations between missionaries and Japanese rulers, then moves on to list dozens of Jesuits ?many of them native Japanese- who died in Japan from the late 16th century to the 1630s. In the East Indies, he deals with India, Ceylon, and the Moluccas; in all cases, his details are from original sources and some times fresh as had previously not been printed. As a Jesuit, the access to information provided by the missionaries around the globe was made readily available to Guerreiro, who took advantage of his position and compiled his work with much care and focusing on the progress and experiences o … [Click Below for Full Description]
