Jousse, Mathurin
La Flèche, George Griveau, 1642. folio, [8], 228 p., with 112 full-page woodcut illustrations (misnumbered 113: since the plates are in the collation we can be certain there never was a plate 29), of which 12 are folding (one with a clean tear), some slight browning of the paper and a few light stains, but good copy in contemporary limp vellum Fowler 160; Millard I, 82; SKB 2538. Only edition, and an interesting provincial imprint, from La Flèche in the Loire region. Jousse (1607- 1692) also wrote treatises on locks and on carpentry, but here he tackles a more difficult technical subject, 'stereotomy', or the application of geometry to stone-cutting. Some of the illustrations are similar to the drawings Jousse did for the French edition of Pélerin’s book on perspective. Philibert de l’Orme had touched briefly on stone-cutting, and in the year after Jousse there appeared Francois Derand's L'Architecture des voûtes, a more theoretical book which became the standard text for architects, hence better preserved. As the only really thorough practical handbook available for working masons Jousse's book was read to pieces, and is very rare today. Thus Derand's book has turned up at auction a dozen times in the last 12 years, while we find just 2 imperfect copies of Jousse's book in the last 25 years, including the Macclesfield copy, which (surprisingly) lacked all twelve folding plates. Incidentally this copy has the stock code of E.P.Goldschmidt, who listed it in 1984 at a then ambitious $9500: 'the first copy we have ever seen'. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

MONTECALIERO.
L? Autore fu ecclesiastico e geografo a Roma. [Click Below for Full Description]

St. Teresa (1515-1582) was an outstanding figure in the Spanish Renaissance, reformer of the Carmelite Order and founder of the Discalced Carmelites along with John of the Cross. She was canonized 1622 by Pope Gregory XV. To this day, her work is considered to be one of the most exalted examples of Mystical writing, and she continues to be widely revered both as a saint and as a writer. The translator, Sir Tobie Matthew (1577-1655), was one of the most notable converts of 17th century England. He was the son of the Archbishop of York. He became member of Parliament, and later member of the House of Commons. He frequented Elizabethan court, and upon the advent of King James I he joined his court as well, receiving a generous grant from him insuring his financial future. He converted to Catholicism after having traveled throughout Italy and France. Upon his return to England he was imprisoned for several months during the Papist persecutions. He fell in and out of favor with the royals on a number of occasions, and suffered a few exiles. Interestingly, whenever he wasn't in exile, he was to be found either in the closest circles of the K … [Click Below for Full Description]

- Registering events in the World associated with the Church, including vast references to its progress in America and Asia. 1642. Madrid. Francisco Martinez Acosta. In 8vo (200 mm x 146 mm). 1 [blank] + 11 ff. + 348 + 40 ff. + 1 [blank]. Contemporary vellum, spine lettered in ink, nearly detached, else very good. Very good copy, some pages lightly browned; else fine. First edition. A widely comprehensive work on the history of the Catholic Church, from the very beginning towards the Age of Discovery; despite the fact that it contains abundant information on the Americas, the work doesn´t appear to be found in Sabin. It is rich in details of the progress of the Society of Jesus in both Asia and America. In fact, it seems that every event associated with the Church all over the world was intended to be registered. It also doesn´t appear to be a common book, not a copy is registered as having sold at auction. Embellished with a handsome engraved title page by Navarro. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Blaeu, Johannes
1642 - An important and early chart of eastern Brazil. c.1642. Amsterdam. A very good example, wide margins, contemporary colour. 500 mm x 385 mm. The map features strong detail of the coastline, with some rather fictitious places and an exaggerated eastern tip. By the first half of the 17th century, Brazilian inland was mostly unknown; this map reflects the relative ignorance regarding the geographical reality of the immense landmass. Embellished with two cartouches –one with the Dutch coat of arms-, two compass roses, and sailing ships. Published in Blaeu’s Atlas Maior, Dutch edition.

The first edition of a learned essay on the origins of the American Indians. It was a reply to Grotius who had argued in 1642 that the American Indians were descendants of Norsemen, Ethiopians, and Chinese, basing his theory mainly on linguistic arguments. Hornius criticized Grotius's philological approach and placed the origins of the American peoples in Scythia, Phoenicia, Carthage and China. The work is bound with Blesdijk's famous biography of the Anabaptist leader David Joris, edited by Jacobus Revius. First published in 1559, it remains the most important source for the life and teaching of David Joris.Fine copies.
