La Haye, Jean de].
[Nürnberg, Wolfgang Endter] (ad 1 with a false colophon: Paris, Toussaint du Bray), 1641-1642. (2) [Harsdörffer, Georg Philipp]. Germania deplorata, sive relatio, qua pragmatica momenta belli pacisque expenduntur. (3) [Milag, Martin]. Aulaea Romana, contra Peristromata Turcica expansa: sive dissertatio emblematica, concordiae Christianae omen repraesentans. (4) [Anonymous French critic of Cardinal Richelieu]. Gallia deplorata, sive relatio, de luctuoso bello, quod rex Christianissimus contra vicinos populos molitur. 4 editions published together in 1 volume. 4to. With 2 engraved title-plates plus 12 full-page engraved emblematic illustrations, all on integral leaves, each with a small plate nested in a larger plate (7 in the Peristromata with a varying plate black and the same outer plate of a Persian carpet in orange). Gold-tooled light brown calf (ca. 1820?) by Charles Murton in London. Rare first and only Latin editions (probably the first and only early editions in any language) of four closely related polemical pamphlets on European policy toward the Ottoman Empire. The publication was instigated by the prominent Nuremberg poet and jurist Georg Philipp Harsdörffer (1607-58), who somehow found access to the French manuscripts of the pro-Richelieu "Peristromata Turcica" (Turkish carpets), and the anti-Richelieu "Gallia deplorata", translated them into Latin, edited them for publication and added what is believed to be his own anti-French Latin rebuttal of the former, "Germania deplorata". On 26 November 1641 he sent all three to the Calvinist Prince Ludwig of Anhalt-Köth … [Click Below for Full Description]

First Edition in Portuguese. 4°, disbound. Large woodcut arms of Portugal on title-page, woodcut initial. Some light dampstaining. In good to very good condition. (6 ll.). *** First Portuguese translation of Andrada Leitão's Copia primae allegationis ... legatus ad ... ordines generales Foederati Belgij ... (The Hague, 1642). Andrada Leitão protests against the activities of Admiral Cornelius Corneliszoon Jol (also known as Pé de Pau) and other attacks on Portuguese possessions by the Dutch, in violation of the ten-year peace treaties between their country and Portugal signed in 1641 and 1642. He mentions specifically the fleet under Jol that went to Angola and S. Thomé, and the activities of the same Admiral in Maranhão and Pernambuco. He also argues that the newly independent kingdom of Portugal should not be treated as a vassal of Spain, with whom the Dutch were at war. Andrade Leitão (born at Condeixa, near Coimbra; d. 1655) was chosen to pronounce an oration at D. João IV's coronation in 1640, and became so trusted by D. João that he was appointed Ambassador Plenipotentiary to England and then to Holland. He also went as Ambassador Plenipotentiary to the peace congress at Munster and Osnaburg in Westphalia. *** Borba de Moraes (1983) I, 464: "rare." Innocêncio II, 334: "raros e estimados." Rambert Chanoine
Trois volumes in - folio sur cinq, comprenant au Tome I : de Berold de Saxe, premier Comte de Savoie à Amédée Septième. 214 pages avec une préface de l'auteur. Tome IV : Charles Emmanuel Premier. 190 pages. Tomes V : de Victor Amédé Premier à Charles Emmanuel Second. 139 pages. [Click Below for Full Description]

Erpenius's 1613 grammar, revised and reprinted several times, was aimed primarily at European scholars. Montagu, Richard
London: Miles Flesher & Robert Young Folio (27.7 cm, 10.9"). [4], 307, [1 (blank)], 313–552 pp.. 1642 First edition: Doctrinal discussion by Richard Montagu (or Mountague), Bishop of Norwich. A controversial theologian, Montagu sought to moderate between the extremes of Catholicism and Calvinism, with his stated goal being to support the Anglican Church by standing "in the gapp against Puritanisme and Popery" (Correspondence of John Cosin, 1.21). Allibone, however, joins many of the bishop's contemporaries in feeling that "There is no doubt as to the place where Bishop Montagu desired to go and to carry with him the king and the Church of England, — to the bosom of the Church of Rome." In the present work Montagu examines Jewish doctrine and practices before the birth of Jesus, and their implications for Christianity; in doing so he argues strongly against Casaubon, Scaliger, and other Protestant scholars, while defending the Catholic Baronius and his Annales Ecclesiastici. The dedication, written in Latin and Greek, is addressed to Jesus Christ. Contemporary mottled calf, shellacked, covers framed and panelled in blind double fillets with blind-tooled corner fleurons, simply rebacked (without labels) with complementary mottled calf; board edges with gilt roll. Original leather rubbed, shellac showing small cracks, edge gilt mostly lost; title-page with small early inked addition to author's name and with inked numeral in lower margin. One early inked marginal annotation, one early inked doodle in lower margin. First and last few leaves with margins browned; light age-ton … [Click Below for Full Description]
