"One of the impressive folios f … [Click Below for Full Description]

GOODWIN, John
London: Printed by R.O. and G.D. and are to be sold by Andrew Crooke, 1642. 1642 1ed PURITAN Goodwin Treatise Justification English Civil War anti RoyalistJohn Goodwin was a 17th-century English preacher who wrote several theological treatises during the English Civil War. One of his earliest work was 'Imputatio Fidei' or 'A Treatise on Justification'. This work was, for more than a century, considered to be on the short list of works that were the best to cover the subject of justification. (Coffey). 'Treatise' was well-known to uphold the Protestant principles and values that were established by the Reformation - in fact, there is much speculation that this work was responsible for many of the 'anti-Cavalier' or 'anti-Royalist' platforms. This 1642 first edition was published the same year as the onset of the English Civil War. It was faced with both popularity and scrutiny, but its popularity lasted until the start of the 19th-century. John Wesley famously edited it with the intention of combating Calvinism and antinomianism. Item number: #8703 Price: $950GOODWIN, JohnImputatio fidei, or, A treatise of justification: wherein ye imputation of faith for righteousness mentioned Rom. 43.5. is explained & also ye great question largly handled whether, ye active obedience of Christ performed to ye morall law be imputed in justification or noe, or how it is imputed. [DUBREUIL, Jean].
BAL 925; ESTC T117737; Fowler, p. 92 note; cf. Berlin Kat. 4714 (1642 French ed.); Millard French 63-64 (1651 & 1679 French eds.). "Third" edition of the second English translation (by the encyclopaedist Ephraim Chambers) of one of the most influential handbooks of perspective ever published: Le perspective practique (Paris, 1642) by the Jesuit mathematician Jean Dubreuil (1602-1670). "Probably the most influential [work on perspective] ever published expressly for the use of a lay audience" (Millard), it is clearly and thoroughly illustrated with 150 full-page engravings printed from the original plates of the 1672 English edition, which were copied in mirror image from the original 1642 edition, plus 2 folding plates illustrating Hodgson's essay. It was especially important in England, where Robert Pricke published a translation already in 1672 and Chambers published the present improved translation in 1726. The title-page describes it as "highly necessary for painters, engravers, architects, embroiderers, statuaries, jewellers, tapestry-workers, and others concerned in designing." The 1739 edition introduced the present 16-page essay on the theory of perspective by James Hodgson, a fellow of the Royal Society and one of England's leading mathematicians, as well as the two folding plates that accompany it. With 19th-century owners' inscriptions at the head of the title-page: "J.G. Poole Southampton 1841" (struck through) and "... Bartlett Worthing" (initial unclear). Very slightly browned, with a transparent stain in the upper right corner of the title-page, an occasiona … [Click Below for Full Description]

1642. Notre blog : https://librairie-trois-plumes.blogspot.fr/ Notre mail : benoit@troisplumes.fr Horace (auteur) ; Nicolas Poussin (artiste) ; Claude Mellan (graveur), Quinti Horatii Flacci Opera. Parisiis [Paris], Typographia Regia [Imprimerie Royale], 1642. In-folio (39.5*27.5cm), [4]-321p.

CENSORINUS
Lugduni Batavorum: I. Maire, 1642. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Censorinus was a 3rd-century Roman grammarian known for his treatise 'De Die Natali'. This work covers a variety of topics including the history and development of mankind, the influence of stars, music, religious rites and ceremonies, astronomy, Greek philosophy, and mathematics. This work includes axioms of Euclid's Elements, as well as definitions of geometric terms. Perhaps, though, the most important section deals with some of the earliest known information on Roman metrics. Early 17th-century editions of Censorinus are considered some of the best due to the commentary and notes by Heinrich Lindenbrog.

Evidently well-used, rebound in the nineteenth-century, and to judge from the binding, still handled and used thereafter, this is a large illustrated fragment consisting of parts 1, 2 and most of 3 (of 7) of the text. The original title-page and front matter, was replaced by a simple manuscript title, probably at the time of rebinding.La Perspective Pratique, by Jean Dubreuil 'the Jesuit' (1602-1670) was popular among artists, architects and designers of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and was still being used by artists well into the nineteenth century as a practical introduction to perspective drawing. As the original title indicates it was intended for the use of painters, engravers, sculptors, goldsmiths, embroiderers and tapestry workers and had a very wide circulation, reprinted in numerous editions, including several in English. It proceeds from the principles of drawing simple shapes and solids in perspective, to specific objects such as chairs, tables, opening chests and shelving, then to buildings and townscapes. Each set of instructions is accompanied by detailed illustrations, which were widely copied. In the printed editions, these were presented as engraved plates opposite the letterpress text, but in this manuscript they are carefully incorporated into the text for ea … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alessandro Calamato
Messina: By the widow Bianco for Domenico Aneto, 1642. FIRST FEMALE PRINTER IN SICILY ¶ [16], 320; [2], 45, [1] p. | 8vo | [maltese cross]^8 A-V^8 ^2A-C^8 | 149 x 102 mm ¶ Second edition, first published at Messina by Pietro Brea in 1529. A collection of hymns from the Roman Breviary, being the original Latin text with nearly line-by-line explications in Italian. The translator and commentator, Alessandro Calamato, was himself a Messina resident and provided the town's printers with nearly two dozen editions. ¶ Imprints appeared under the Widow Bianco's name from 1637 to 1642, during which time she produced 31 editions of "excellent workmanship" (Lipari). She was one of just two printers working in Messina during these years. Not only did she outproduce her single competitor, but she maintained the lucrative "stamperia camerale" designation, together according this early modern businesswoman exceptional influence over the printing industry in one of Sicily's largest cities. ¶ It's worth nothing that Margherita Bufalini makes a brief appearance in the archival record of Messinese printing as the widow of printer Fausto Bufalini (d. 1592). But it was Pietro Brea, who became Margherita's second husband in 1594, who continued Fausto's typographic legacy. Margherita appears not to have played any role in the business. To be sure, the Widow Bianco is the first printer Valentina Sestini covers in her Donne tipografe a Messina tra XVII e XIX secolo. ¶ Rare. We locate only a single copy outside Italy (Newberry). --- PROVENANCE: Contemporary ownership inscription on … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ovalle, Alonso de
1642. Madrid. Francisco Maroto. Folio, (288 x 210 mm). 4 ff. Unbound. Some light toning, else fine.- First edition. Exceedingly rare work by Father Ovalle concerning the Peace made with theAraucanosof Chile, narrating the campaign to put an end to the long rebellion of the Indians, the internal conflicts between the Caciques [Indian Chiefs], and the release of the Spaniards made prisoners –some of whom had been held for 40 years. At the end, it transcribes the treaty signed between the Governor of Chile, Marques de Baides, and the Araucano leader to pacify the region; it was accomplished after the Araucanians were persuaded to accept the Spanish King´s authority, by witnessing miraculous portents. Ovalle praises the Spanish commander for his compassion and humanity, despite a strong claim for punishment of the natives. The title reads “True account of the Peace which… the Governor of Chili, has made with the rebellious Araucanian Indians. Drawn up… from the Jesuit Fathers who accompanied the royal expedition... Containing the strange wonders that preceded this peace. A volcano that burst out with flaming ashes… heated the springs and cooked the fish in the rivers... Treating the liberation of the Spanish captives and the solemnity and ceremonies with which the enemy concluded the Peace” (Maggs, VI, 247, 1927). Alonso de Ovalle(1601 – 1651) was a Chilean born Jesuit Priest, historian, and educator, member of a prominent colonial family; his studies were carried out in Cordoba (Argentina) and finished in Chile, … [Click Below for Full Description]

DESCARTES, Rene.
Ludovicus Elzevirium, Amsterdam, 1642. TP + verso of TP = Errata + [i]-[xi] = Epistola + [xii]-[xviii] = Præfatio ad Lectorem + 1-496 [as issued - bound with] Objectiones Septimæ in Meditationes de Prima Philosophia cum notis Authoris (The Seventh Set of Objections with the Author's response). Amsterdam: Ludovicus Elzevirium. 1642. TP + 3-212 + 2 blank leaves, 12 mo. [two works in one volume - as issued] Second Edition of the Meditationes, First Edition of the Objectiones Septimæ. The first edition of Descartes' Meditations was published in Paris in 1641 - presenting the most detailed explanation of his metaphysical system. The six meditations follow Descartes as he categorically doubts everything he knows and then tries to discover a method whereby he can establish what, if anything, can be known with certainty. This book - along with the earlier presentation (Discours, 1637) of roughly the same ideas - was a foundational moment in Modern Philosophy and a seismic event in the history of Western ideas. That first edition also contained the six famous objections that Descartes had received from various commentators - who had been sent the work to prior to its publication. These included the Dutch theologian Johannes Caterus, various "theologians and philosophers" gathered by Descartes' friend and principal correspondent, Friar Marin Mersenne, the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes, the theologian and logician Antoine Arnauld and the philosopher, Pierre Gassendi. This second edition was issued a year later with an additional 'Seventh Set of Objections' that had been sent to De … [Click Below for Full Description]
