Guadagnoli, Filippo.
Rome, Propaganda Fide, Joseph David Luna, 1642.. Folio. [12], 349, [1], [2 blank] pp. With the Propaganda Fide's woodcut rectangular Jesus and Apostles device on the title-page, their round Jesus and Apostles device above the colophon, 1 woodcut tailpiece, 2 woodcut decorated initials (2 series), and numerous decorations built up from cast arabesque fleurons. Set in roman, italic and Arabic type with incidental Hebrew. Contemporary sheepskin parchment, sewn on 5 cords (3 secured to the boards, 2 cut flush with the bookblock), headbands worked in pink and white, edges sprinkled pink and blue, manuscript spine title in 2nd of 6 compartments.. First and only edition of Guadagnoli's Latin grammar of the Arabic language, in a luxurious folio format. In 1632 the Propaganda Fide had begun work on an Arabic Bible that was not to be completed until 1671. Guadagnoli (1596-1656) was one of the correctors for the Bible and in the present grammar, set in the same type, he notes that they have taken special care with their Arabic setting and with the metre to suit them to the desires of native Arabic speakers, though the fact that the text was in Latin and the fact that it must have been an expensive book would have limited the audience: it is not the sort of book that missionaries would give away to common people. Erpenius's 1613 grammar, revised and reprinted several times, was aimed primarily at European scholars. The main text opens with a table of the letters, showing (from left to right!) the stand-alone, initial, medial and final forms, along with the name of each letter and its p … [Click Below for Full Description]

Montagu, Richard
London: Miles Flesher & Robert Young Folio (27.7 cm, 10.9"). [4], 307, [1 (blank)], 313–552 pp.. 1642 First edition: Doctrinal discussion by Richard Montagu (or Mountague), Bishop of Norwich. A controversial theologian, Montagu sought to moderate between the extremes of Catholicism and Calvinism, with his stated goal being to support the Anglican Church by standing "in the gapp against Puritanisme and Popery" (Correspondence of John Cosin, 1.21). Allibone, however, joins many of the bishop's contemporaries in feeling that "There is no doubt as to the place where Bishop Montagu desired to go and to carry with him the king and the Church of England, — to the bosom of the Church of Rome." In the present work Montagu examines Jewish doctrine and practices before the birth of Jesus, and their implications for Christianity; in doing so he argues strongly against Casaubon, Scaliger, and other Protestant scholars, while defending the Catholic Baronius and his Annales Ecclesiastici. The dedication, written in Latin and Greek, is addressed to Jesus Christ. Contemporary mottled calf, shellacked, covers framed and panelled in blind double fillets with blind-tooled corner fleurons, simply rebacked (without labels) with complementary mottled calf; board edges with gilt roll. Original leather rubbed, shellac showing small cracks, edge gilt mostly lost; title-page with small early inked addition to author's name and with inked numeral in lower margin. One early inked marginal annotation, one early inked doodle in lower margin. First and last few leaves with margins browned; light age-ton … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jousse, Mathurin
La Flèche, George Griveau, 1642. folio, [8], 228 p., with 112 full-page woodcut illustrations (misnumbered 113: since the plates are in the collation we can be certain there never was a plate 29), of which 12 are folding (one with a clean tear), some slight browning of the paper and a few light stains, but good copy in contemporary limp vellum Fowler 160; Millard I, 82; SKB 2538. Only edition, and an interesting provincial imprint, from La Flèche in the Loire region. Jousse (1607- 1692) also wrote treatises on locks and on carpentry, but here he tackles a more difficult technical subject, 'stereotomy', or the application of geometry to stone-cutting. Some of the illustrations are similar to the drawings Jousse did for the French edition of Pélerin’s book on perspective. Philibert de l’Orme had touched briefly on stone-cutting, and in the year after Jousse there appeared Francois Derand's L'Architecture des voûtes, a more theoretical book which became the standard text for architects, hence better preserved. As the only really thorough practical handbook available for working masons Jousse's book was read to pieces, and is very rare today. Thus Derand's book has turned up at auction a dozen times in the last 12 years, while we find just 2 imperfect copies of Jousse's book in the last 25 years, including the Macclesfield copy, which (surprisingly) lacked all twelve folding plates. Incidentally this copy has the stock code of E.P.Goldschmidt, who listed it in 1984 at a then ambitious $9500: 'the first copy we have ever seen'. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
