Censorinus Grammaticus
Leiden: Johann Maire, 1642. Leiden:: Johann Maire,, 1642.. 8vo.. Heinric Lindenbrog, ed. & comm. (?)8,A-S8. Contemp. limp vellum, old library stamps on title page, bookplate of " Le Bibliophobe Bechtel". One folding diagram, 8 text cuts. Censorinus (3rd c. A.D.), Roman grammarian and author of this work on Natal days. "The first part deals with human life, particularly its origins, the second with time and its divisions." [-OCD]. "...De die natali, which is extant, is dedicated as a birhday present to a little-known patron, Quintus Caerellius; according to Censorinus' own statements, it was written in 238. The content of this comprehensive work can be divided into three parts... The first part, which is based on the Roman savant Varro, deals chiefly with human procreation and pregnancy, with excursuses on the influence of the stars and on music. In the second part, which is based on a lost work by Varro, Censorinus treats the different divisions of time (age, year, month, day, etc.). As in the first part, he mentions the doctrines of Greek philosophers. Not all of the De die natali has survived; the manuscript of the conclusion has been lost, as are its author and title. This work, now entitled Fragmentum Censorini, is a more important for the history of science...It contains a series of short tractates from an encyclopedic work on astronomy, geometry, music, and metrics. The chapter on geometry, which deals with the definitions, postulates, and axioms of book I of Euclid's Elements, differs greatly from the other known translations of Euclid. The chapters on metrics are … [Click Below for Full Description]

LOUBÈRE, Simon de la.
1642. [8], 436, [2]; [4], 324, [1], [1 blank] pp.Second edition, published in the same years as the first, of a comprehensive work on the history of the kingdom of Siam, "Universally regarded as the finest work on seventeenth-century Thailand" (Wyatt). The French diplomat Simon de La Loubère (1642-1729) was appointed as Louis XIV's envoy extraordinary to the court of Siam, and while he stayed in Siam for only three months he diligently and systemically asked questions, "probably stimulated by the Jesuit scientists who accompanied the mission to take more than a passing interest in Siamese cosmology, astronomy, and mathematics" (Lach & Van Kley). Loubère compensated his short stay with a thorough study of earlier writers, referring to twenty-three European authors from Pinto to Gervaise in the first volume and collecting French translations of native works in the second. Besides presenting information on Siam itself, Loubère also incorporates information on India and China and their influence on Siam's past. With the armorial bookplate of Anton Ernst Burckhard van Birckenstein (active 1686-1744) on paste-down. Very good copy.l STCN (6 copies); Walravens 92; cf. Lach & Van Kley III, pp. 1194-1196; Wyatt, "Introduction" in: A new historical relation of the Kingdom of Siam (1966).

Le Gauffre, Thomas
Claude Sonnius & Denis Bechet, Paris 1642 - Text in French. Measures 7" X 5" and 567 pages. Very good full vellum binding. Joints are fine and hinges are fine. Vellum covers curling mildly, as vellum does. Provided with a custom cut removable protective Mylar cover. Contents are very good. Some soil and light water stains on first few pages. Otherwise the book is clean and bright inside. Old bookplate. The author, Thomas Le Gauffre, was principal advisor to the King's court, first bishop of New France in 1645, and was designated as spiritual successor of Father Claude Bernard. Father Claude Bernard (December 23, 1588 - March 23, 1641) was a French Roman Catholic priest who was active in ministry to prisoners and criminals, especially those condemned to death. Known as "le pauvre pretre" (the poor priest), he is primarily remembered as the popularizer of the Memorare, over 200,000 copies of which he distributed by leaflets printed in various languages. His father was a distinguished lawyer. Young Bernard was educated at the Jesuit College of Dole and was remarked for his brilliant imagination and wit. Pierre Le Camus, Bishop of Belley, urged him to enter the priesthood, but he declined, saying that he preferred the life of a poor gentleman to that of a poor priest. Shortly afterwards he went to Paris as a protégé of M. de Bellegarde, Governor of Bourgogne. For a while the social life of the capital attracted him. By one account, about this time, he had a dream of his late father warning him against the worldliness to which he was addicted. Gradually, some disappointments and … [Click Below for Full Description]

BLAEU, Willem
Joan and Cornelis Blaeu,, Amsterdam, 1642. Blaeu's user's manual for globes, spheres and sundials 4to. (205 by 160mm), [9] ff. 277pp., numerous diagrams and woodcut illustrations within text, contemporary marginalia to title and a few leaves, some light dampstaining, final leaf with lower part cut off, contemporary vellum, title in manuscript to spine. Scarce first French edition of the great cartographer's handbook to his famous globes and spheres, published by his sons Joan and Cornelis. The master globe-maker, who had recently produced the largest globes in the world to date (68 cm in diameter), authored the Institution Astronomique so that his customers might get the most out of their celestial and terrestrial globes. Blaeu gives a detailed explanation of the various parts of a globe, followed by a series of nearly 150 exercises. By positioning your terrestrial globe as Blaeu directs, it is a simple matter to determine the time in different parts of the world, or to ascertain the length of a day in your hometown of Amsterdam at any given season. There are exercises for both the celestial sphere concerning the ascendancy of certain constellations and the terrestrial globe locating a town in Indonesia given its coordinates or utilising rhumb lines to learn about navigation. The Institution Astronomique is divided into two parts, the first following the improper hypothesis of Ptolemy, the second following the true Copernican hypothesis, similar in arrangement to Galileo's Dialogo. Blaeu explains that he devotes a great many pages to the Ptolemaic system only because it is … [Click Below for Full Description]

This Dutch edition from 1570 is illustrated throughout with woodcuts depicting adultery, murder, theft and many other crimes. Damhoude … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Pallavicino, Ferrante].
12mo. (153) pp., final blank f. Marbled half calf (c. 1780) with giltstamped spine labels and floral endpapers. All edges sprinkled in red. Almost unobtainable first edition of the author's most notorious work: "Prima ediz. stamp. colla falsa data di Cambrai nel 1642" (Libr. Vinciana, p. 21). The "libro più pornografico e più aretinesco del '600" (Q. Marini, P. Aretino nel '600, in: P. Aretino nel cinquecentenario della nascita, p. 486). "The Rhetoric of Whores"), a scandalous anti-Jesuit work, "demonstrates why Pallavicino was the only Italian author of his epoch capable of a coherent vision that integrated satire, skepticism, and naturalistic morality" (Muir, Culture Wars [Cambridge: Harvard, 2007], p. 90). The book is written in the form of a dialogue between an aged prostitute and her naive apprentice. The fifteen lessons of the old whore were based on Cipriano Suarez's "De arte rhetorica", the manual used in Jesuit schools. Muir pointedly notes, "By systematically pursuing the parallels between rhetorical persuasion and erotic seduction, Pallavicino demonstrates how the high art of rhetoric has the same instrumental character as the lowly deceptions of the prostitute." - Some browning throughout. Prettily bound; removed from the Nádasdy library with stamp on title page. Exceedingly rare: no copy in auction records internationally; the earliest recorded copy sold in 1960 (another false "Cambrai" imprint, dated 1644). BL (Italian Books) 647. OCLC 65523066. Cf. Libr. Vinciana 75 (1673 Villafranca ed. only). Englisch 605. Brunet IV, 1251.

Bologna, Io.

Bel exemplaire. Manque à Pastoureau.

Israel SILVESTRE (Nancy, 1621 - Parigi, 1691).
1642. Acquaforte, 1642, firmata in lastra in basso. Molto rara. Etching, 1642, signed on lower plate. Beautiful work, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to platemark, perfectly executed repairs at the upper right center, otherwise in very good condition. Panoramic and uncommon view of the city, from the slopes of Mount Mario. The Basilica in the foreground has been depicted in detail, as is the view of the city, where many buildings can be identified. Silvestre was drawer and engraver; he was born in Nancy in 1621. Between 1638 and 1641 Silvestre travelled along Italy and there are many evidences of his presence in the Peninsula between 1643 a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Guadagnoli, Filippo.
1642. Folio. [12], 349, [1], [2 blank] pp. With the Propaganda Fide's woodcut rectangular Jesus and Apostles device on the title-page, their round Jesus and Apostles device above the colophon, 1 woodcut tailpiece, 2 woodcut decorated initials (2 series), and numerous decorations built up from cast arabesque fleurons. Set in roman, italic and Arabic type with incidental Hebrew. Contemporary sheepskin parchment, sewn on 5 cords (3 secured to the boards, 2 cut flush with the bookblock), headbands worked in pink and white, edges sprinkled pink and blue, manuscript spine title in 2nd of 6 compartments. First and only edition of Guadagnoli's Latin grammar of the Arabic language, in a luxurious folio format. In 1632 the Propaganda Fide had begun work on an Arabic Bible that was not to be completed until 1671. Guadagnoli (1596-1656) was one of the correctors for the Bible and in the present grammar, set in the same type, he notes that they have taken special care with their Arabic setting and with the metre to suit them to the desires of native Arabic speakers, though the fact that the text was in Latin and the fact that it must have been an expensive book would have limited the audience: it is not the sort of book that missionaries would give away to common people. Erpenius's 1613 grammar, revised and reprinted several times, was aimed primarily at European scholars. The main text opens with a table of the letters, showing (from left to right!) the stand-alone, initial, medial and final forms, along with the name of each letter and its pronunciation. Grotius, Hugo, philosopher and jurist (1583-1645).
1642. 4to. ½ p. on folded double leaf. With autogr. address and traces of a seal. To the Swabian military leader Christoph Martin von Degenfeld (1599-1653), under whom Grotius's son had served in the Swedish army and to whom Grotius pledges his allegiance: "Nous touts qui sommes icy, moi, les Dames, le filz et la fille remercions vostre Illustrete de la souvenance qu'elle a de nous: et la prions de croire que ce qui a manque au traittement deu a ses qualitez est supple par l'affection qui a este, est, et sera toujours tres sincere [...]". - Degenfeld, who had distinguished himself in Wallenstein's force, later fought for the Swedish side; after the Emperor's victory in 1634, he had to flee to Strasbourg. He became High General of foreign cavalry in French services, but fell out with Cardinal Richelieu in the year of this letter and entered Venetian service as Governor-General of Dalmatia and Albania. This is probably Degenfeld's new "lieu de repos" to which Grotius refers in his present letter. Grotius himself was at the time serving as Swedish ambassador in Paris; his principal work, "De jure belli ac pacis" (1625), laid the foundations for international law. - Letters from Grotius's hand are of the utmost rarity; the present one is the only one established at German auctions since 1950 (Robert Amman collection, Stargardt, 16 Nov. 1961, no. 353).

SGUALDI Vincenzo
Ferroni, 1642. In 16o, pp. (48) + 478 + (49) di indice + (1). Firma all'occhietto. Legatura in p. pg. coeva.
