Africa]. Basan, Alvaro de
The taking of a Muslim city in North Africa, one of two known copies. 1642. Madrid. Juan Sanchez. In folio (280 mm x 206 mm). 2 ff. Unbound. Lower margin a little cropped, not affecting text, minor spotting, else very good. First edition. Rare imprint –one of two known copies-, with news of the capture, and looting of Carte (Oran, originally taken by Spanish forces in 1509); the imprint provides details of the Muslims who inhabit the region, populated mostly by “Xarifes Morabitos”; whom, according to the writer, descend directly from Mahoma, are reputed to be braver than common, and to have troubled the forces at Oran for long enough. Near Oran –where Spanish forces settled-, the Turks fortified a city called Carte, which made the Spanish restless, for the strategic military location of it. The core of the relation details the battle and military actions as that of Salomon Zaporta “de los primeros que entro en el lugar, y mato a un Moro cuerpo a cuerpo”, and the exposition of Luis de Cervantes, who entered the place, securing it, and making sure there was no “Moor” alive. ALDROVANDI, U.
Bononiae, J.B. Ferroni, 1642. Folio (355 x 232mm). pp. (8, including one blank leaf)), 593, (29), including an engraved allegorical title and about 600 partly full-page woodcuts in the text. Contemporary vellum, spine in 6 compartments (fronthinges cracked but firm). The first major work on shells. The first edition was published in 1606. Aldrovandi was a truly Renaissance universal mind, writing on many aspects of natural history. His oeuvre consists of 13 large folio volumes, of which only 4 appeared during his lifetime. "Although Aldrovandi is not identified with any revolutionary discoveries, his work as a teacher and as the author of volumes that constitute an irreplacable cultural patrimony earns him a place among the fathers of modern science. Perhaps most importantly he was among the first to attempt to free the natural sciences from the stifling influence of the authority of textbooks, for which he substituted, as far as possible, direct study and observation of the animal, vegetable, and mineral worlds" (DSB I, pp. 108-110). The work deals likewise with crustacea and zoophytes. A clean copy.Provenance: heraldic bookplates of Philip M. Chancellor and Sir Richard Vyvyan.Nissen ZBI. 68; B.M.(Nat. Hist.)I, 26. LA MOTHE LE VAYER (F. de).
A Paris, chez François Targa, 1642. - in-4. 4ff. 374pp. Jammes, Libertins Erudits, 227. Tchemerzine … [Click Below for Full Description]

Baptista Ferronij, 1642 (ma 1654 al colophon), rilegato in piena pergamena coeva, tassello in pelle al dorso, tagli spruzzati in blu, bel frontespizio calcografico ad imitazione di quello dell'edizione del 1606 di Giovanni Battista Bellagamba, pp. (2)-593-(28) ma ripetute nella numerazione le pagine 421-422 e omesse le pagine 429-430, con circa 600 incisioni xilografiche nel testo. Bella marca editoriale in fine: Ercole con la clava uccide l'Idra di Lerna. Ai suoi piedi, una fiaccola ed una spada. Sullo sfondo una palma. Motto su un nastro: Invidia virtute superavit. This map depicts the course of the river Danube and the surrounding countries from its headwaters in the Black Forest of southern Germany to its mouth on the Black Sea. The river flows through a series of broad and fertile valleys with several of eastern Europe's most important cities on its banks. This is one of Blaeu's largest atlas maps, printed on two joined sheets. The extravagant title cartouche is flanked by the Holy Roman Emperor and Europa on one side and the Ottoman Sultan and Asia on the other, representing the long struggle between the two powers for control of the region. The scale of miles is attended by an assortment of muscular river gods and putti representing the mighty river and its tributaries. A nice impression with beautiful old color. LA MOTHE LE VAYER (Fran?ois de);
Lucus a?n? ? sur l … [Click Below for Full Description]
