London: Printed by A.N. for Mathew Walbanke and Richard Best, 1642. [iv], 157, [1] pp. Woodcut text illustrations of genealogical relationships. Octavo (5-3/4" x 3-1/2"). Gottfried, Johann Ludwig
Third edition; an interesting history of the world, in an imposing volume, contemporary-bound in a peculiar blindstamped skin, with devices on covers coloured by a contemporary hand. The binding seems to by in imitation of the Wittenberg binder Thomas Kruger. A remarkable binding, in a strictly untouched state, featuring a medallion on the front cover with contemporary colour representing "Caritas and the beggar", and lettered in blind re-enhanced with red with the inscription "Chronica J. L. Gottfridi M.DC.XXXXII. Matthaeus Merian Frankcfurt Ammain", thus identifying the work and printers details; the lower cover is more austere in decoration, simply showing the Brandenburg arms, also heightened with colour, this time red and black. The binding is probably attributable to a follower of the Kruger workshop (see his Melanchton/Luther-decorated binding at the BL). The Margraviate of Brandenburg, and their longest ruling house, the Hohenzollern, played a significant role in the history of Germany and Central Europe, by the 17th century it inherited the Duchy of Prussia, paving the way to the Kingdom of Prussia, which would help shape modern Europe; the relevance and influence of the Margraves was rivalled by only a few houses across Europe (having had part of the Elections for the Holy Roman Emperor, participating in the Prussian victories and expansion in the 18th century, the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in the 19th century, and the unification of Germany in the 19th century), this binding, commissioned for one of them, or presented as a gift by them, is a wonderf … [Click Below for Full Description]

Near Fine. 4to: [16],214,[2]pp, with a copper-engraved title page showing numerical manifestations of ‘666’ and their supposed connections with the Catholic Church, signed: W. Marshall sculp, full-page metal cut, woodcut diagrams in the text, numerous woodcut initials and a head- and tailpiece. Leaf X4 is a cancel; final leaf is blank. Beautifully bound in 19th century half-calf, spine gilt in six compartments, red morocco lettering piece gilt; brown medium diaper cloth-covered boards; all edges speckled red; sea-green end papers. Complete in all respects and in excellent condition internally and externally, with clean pages, clear print and ample margins throughout. Engraved title is a rich, deep impression. Provenance: book plate from the North Library of the Earls of Macclesfield and binder's ticket (Hatton of Manchester) on front paste down. Wing P3028. ESTC Citation No. R40657. Madan, II, 1032. First Edition one of the most curious and fascinating books published during the seventeenth century, Potter’s treatise on the Number of the Beast. Clergyman, instrument-maker and a founder of the Royal Society, Potter, according to the ODNB, "was interested in computing the number of the beast, connecting 25, the ‘appropinque’ square root of 666, with various institutions in the Roman Catholic church. His ideas were elaborated in a manuscript which was read in 1637 by Joseph Mede, and commended as … [Click Below for Full Description]

[CAPUEEL, Engelbert].
BMN I, p. 8; Worldcat (5 copies); cf. Blake, p. 77; Wellcome II, p. 298; not in STCV. Rare revised and enlarged sixth edition of a medical compendium by the Belgian pharmacist Capueel Engelbert (1642-1733). It contains a collection of medicines and remedies for common diseases and ailments, based on different sources as well as the author's own experience. Therefore, according to the author, the book contains many new remedies. The first part deals with internal diseases, including fevers, dysentery, yellow fever, fainting, epilepsy, nose bleeds, lyse and worms. Capueel stands in the Galenic tradition of humorism, with bile from the pancreas as the main reason for fevers. The second part treats external diseases, including ailments to the eyes, teeth and skin (such as burns, mange and wounds). The third part is a pharmacopeia, describing different distillates, syrups and the use of salt when treating an illness. Capueel claims to have read all the pharmacopoeias, including the ones from London and Augsburg, and aims with his pharmacopoeia to correct their errors.Binding rubbed along the extremities. Otherwise in very good condition.

O[WEN], D[avid]
London printed, 1642. 4to., (6) + 30pp., bound recently in boards with printed title label on spine. A very good crisp copy. Originally published in 1610, as Herod and Pilate reconciled>, and now evidently revived as a royalist commentary on the political upheavals of the 1640s. It was to be republished in 1643, 1652, and 1663, and a Dutch translation was published in 1660 by Johann Utenbogaert. Owen's original tract originated in a manuscript, completed by Owen in May 1610, on The power of princes and the dutie of subjectes according to the scripture and the judgement of the auncient fathers for an antidote against the poyson of the late and lewde doctrine of papistes & puritanes>. [BL, Royal ms 18 Bv]. 'Topical in its implicit endorsement of the king's right to sanction extreme measures against Roman Catholic conspirators, it is likely Owen's piece was read at court. Published later in 1610, as Herod and Pilate reconciled>, at Cambridge, the printed version follows the manuscript text with a few minor corrections'. [Nicholas Cranfield in ODNB]. BLAEU, Willem Janszoon.
Amsterdam: , c 1642. Size: 480 × 580 mm. Copperplate engraving with early wash colour. Dutch text on verso. Very good condition. A very fine and most attractive mid seventeenth century map of the delightful L'Isle de Ré and the L'Isle de Oleron in the Pictou-Charentes region of north west France. North is orientated to the left. This Blaeu map is typically detailed and precise and complemented by a number of subtle, decorative embellishments; compass roses, galleons, a divider and a mileage scale, a sea monster, and a discreet title cartouche. Throughout the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the island alternated between belonging to the English or French crowns. In 1987, a 3 km bridge was constructed between the island and the mainland, making the island an attractive tourist and holiday destination.

ROSENHANE, Johan (resp.) || SCHEFFERUS, Johannes (pres.)
- Lidén I, s. 408 för Johannes Rosenhanes avhandling under Schefferus presidium. Drees 158, 160 resp. [Click Below for Full Description]
