Holles, Denzell (Denzil) Holles
Printed for Thomas Underhill at the Signe of the Bible in Wood-street, 1642-01-01. Hardcover. Very Good. Fine modern leather binding, with gold lettering. [2], 6 p. Cropped margins. Printer's device. Denzil Holles (1599–1680) was a noted English parliamentarian during the reign of Charles I and the English Civil War. Holles was one of 5 arrested by King Charles for his actions halting the adjournment of Parliament in 1629. "On 2 March 1629, when, contrary to the will of the House of Commons, the speaker pleaded the king's order to adjourn it, and sought to leave the chair, Holles and another member kept him in it by force. ‘God's wounds!’ swore Holles, ‘you shall sit till we please to rise.’ At the end of the same stormy sitting it was Holles who recited and put to the house Eliot's three resolutions against innovation in religion and arbitrary taxation (Gardiner, History of England, vii. 68, 75; Old Parliamentary History, viii. 332, 354, 361)." - DNB This arrest hastened the outbreak of the English Civil War. Holles was subsequently an important figure during the Long Parliament. In this speech Holles discusses the impeachment of "the nine royalist peers [including Richmond] who had refused to obey the summons of parliament, and conducted himself the charge against them." (Sanford, p. 478; Old Parliamentary History, xi. 200).An important document from the English Civil war detailing the development of Parliamentary power. See Wing.

CAPUEEL, Engelbert].
1642. STCV (1 copy); WorldCat (2 additional copies); cf. Blake, p. 77; BMN I, p. 8. Very rare revised and enlarged fifth edition of a medical compendium by the Belgian pharmacist Engelbert Capueel (1642-1733). It contains a collection of medicines and remedies for common diseases and ailments, based on different sources as well as the author's own experience. The author therefore indicates that the book contains many new remedies. The first part deals with internal diseases, including fevers, dysentery, yellow fever, fainting, epilepsy, nose bleeds, lice and worms. Capueel stands in the Galenic tradition of humorism, with bile from the pancreas as the main reason for fevers. The second part treats external diseases, including ailments to the eyes, teeth and skin (such as burns, mange and wounds). The third part is a medical recipe book, describing different distillates, syrups and the use of salt when treating an illness. Capueel claims to have read all the pharmacopoeias, including the ones from London and Augsburg, and aims with his pharmacopoeia to correct their errors.With bookplate. Title-page browned and frayed, only slightly browned throughout, with a water stain in the lower margin of the first few leaves, otherwise in very good condition. Binding chafed, hinges cracked and head and foot of spine damaged.

WHITE, Thomas.
Parisiis: Apud Dionysium Moreau, 1642. FIRST EDITION. De Mundo was inspired by Galileo's Dialogo. Like Galileo's book it is written in the form of dialogues, the first dealing with cosmology, the second with questions of motion, the third with problems of cause. "Galileo's views play a part in the first dialogue, particularly with regard to the nature of comets, and his ideas on motion occupy most of the second dialogue. Although White repudiated the circular motion of the earth in this book, he took pains to set forth Galileo's arguments at length and with care, giving special attention to his theory of the tides. Since Galileo's Dialogo, in which these arguments had originally appeared, was a rigorously banned book, one may well wonder whether White was entirely opposed to Galileo, or whether he had in mind the purpose of keeping his ideas in circulation as much as that of criticizing them" (Drake). All of White's own books were banned in 1661. White was a respected member of Mersenne's circle in Paris, where he wrote his two major works of natural philosophy, De mundo being one of them. "...with his remarkable accommodation of Copernican heliocentric cosmology and newly revived atomic theory, White was later identified by Leibniz as one who had contrived to 'reconcile Aristotle with modern philosophy' (Southgate, 9). Favourable assessments of De mundo were made by contemporaries, including Descartes..." (ODNB). Thomas White (1593-1676), publishing here under the name of Thomas Anglus, was an English Catholic recusant who studied and taught at a number of English colleg … [Click Below for Full Description]

BIBLE GRECQUE. NOUVEAU TESTAMENT DE L'IMPRIMERIE ROYALE;
Imprimerie Royale (Ek BasilikhV TupografiaV) Paris 1642. Grand in-folio (430 X 295 mm). TERESA, Saint, of Avila.
- Antwerpe, printed by Iohannes Meursius. 1642. First edition of this translation. 8vo (10.5 x 16.5cm) [72], 660, [12]pp., occasional pencil marks in the margins, a very good, clean copy with generous margins in near-contemporary sheep over wooden boards, flat spine and edges of boards blind-ruled, boards with both original brass clasps intact, all edges red light wear to extremities. An excellent copy of the scarce first edition of this translation into English by the prominent Roman Catholic writer and courtier Sir Toby Matthew (1577-1655) of the autobiography of Saint Teresa of Avila (1515-1582), Spanish mystic, Carmelite nun and leading beacon of the Counter Reformation. Celebrated as both an important literary work of the Spanish Golden Age and a milestone of Catholic spirituality, St. Teresa’s Vida was first Englished by Michael Walpole (1570-1625) as The lyf of the mother Teresa of Iesus . (Antwerp, 1611). However, Matthew, musing in his lengthy preface on the challenges he faced writing his version, explains how he considered that the producer of that earlier translation “seemed to have lost a little of his owne English toung, and on the other, not to have acquired enough of the Spanish.” He dedicated his new edition to “the incomparable, soveraigne princesse, Henrietta-Maria,” noting her “extraordinary devotion” both to St.Teresa and to “the holy religious woemen of her angelicall order; whereof, the English nation . hath a monastery at Antwerp.” Presumably the printing of this book at Antwerp by Joannes Meursius (1583-1 … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Pallavicino, Ferrante].
12mo. (153) pp., final blank f. Marbled half calf (c. 1780) with giltstamped spine labels and floral endpapers. All edges sprinkled in red. Almost unobtainable first edition of the author's most notorious work: "Prima ediz. stamp. colla falsa data di Cambrai nel 1642" (Libr. Vinciana, p. 21). The "libro più pornografico e più aretinesco del '600" (Q. Marini, P. Aretino nel '600, in: P. Aretino nel cinquecentenario della nascita, p. 486). "The Rhetoric of Whores"), a scandalous anti-Jesuit work, "demonstrates why Pallavicino was the only Italian author of his epoch capable of a coherent vision that integrated satire, skepticism, and naturalistic morality" (Muir, Culture Wars [Cambridge: Harvard, 2007], p. 90). The book is written in the form of a dialogue between an aged prostitute and her naive apprentice. The fifteen lessons of the old whore were based on Cipriano Suarez's "De arte rhetorica", the manual used in Jesuit schools. Muir pointedly notes, "By systematically pursuing the parallels between rhetorical persuasion and erotic seduction, Pallavicino demonstrates how the high art of rhetoric has the same instrumental character as the lowly deceptions of the prostitute." - Some browning throughout. Prettily bound; removed from the Nádasdy library with stamp on title page. Exceedingly rare: no copy in auction records internationally; the earliest recorded copy sold in 1960 (another false "Cambrai" imprint, dated 1644). BL (Italian Books) 647. OCLC 65523066. Cf. Libr. Vinciana 75 (1673 Villafranca ed. only). Englisch 605. Brunet IV, 1251.

Droste, Coenraad
4°: pi1 A 4 (-A4) B-2B 4 (-2B4, blanco?), gepag.: [2] 196 pp. Titelpagina in rood en zwart. [Click Below for Full Description]

[CAPUEEL, Engelbert].
STCV (1 copy); Worldcat (2 other copies); cf. Blake, p. 77; BMN I, p. 8. Very rare revised and enlarged fifth edition of a medical compendium by the Belgian pharmacist Capueel Engelbert (1642-1733). It contains a collection of medicines and remedies for common diseases and ailments, based on different sources as well as the author's own experience. Therefore, according to the author, the book contains many new remedies. The first part deals with internal diseases, including fevers, dysentery, yellow fever, fainting, epilepsy, nose bleeds, lyse and worms. Capueel stands in the Galenic tradition of humorism, with bile from the pancreas as the main reason for fevers. The second part treats external diseases, including ailments to the eyes, teeth and skin (such as burns, mange and wounds). The third part is a pharmacopeia, describing different distillates, syrups and the use of salt when treating an illness. Capueel claims to have read all the pharmacopoeias, including the ones from London and Augsburg, and aims with his pharmacopoeia to correct their errors.With bookplate. Title-page browned and frayed, only slightly browned throughout with a water stain in the lower margin of the first few leaves, otherwise in very good condition. Binding chafed, hinges cracked and top and bottom of spine damaged.
