Pietro TESTA detto "Il Lucchesino"
Acquaforte, circa 1640, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. Venus giving arms to Aeneas. Giovanni Benedetto CASTIGLIONE detto "Il Grechetto" (Genova 1616 - Mantova 1670)
Acquaforte, 1635 - 1640 ca, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra, 'GIO BENEDETTO Castiglione GENOVESE'. Etching, 1635 - 1640 ca, signed at lower left: 'GIO BENEDETTO Castiglione GENOVESE'. Second state, of four, with a black line, at the top in the sky, mesauring about 1 cm. Good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed close to platemark, very good condition. Depicted is a scene from the story of Jacob, in the book of Genesis (XXXI, 33 -35). After fleeing Laban's house in the middle of the night, Jacob and his wives, Rachel and Leah, are overtaken by Laban, who searches for the household idols stolen by Rachel in an attempt to protect Jacob from another twenty years of labor under her father's rule. According to Bellini, the influence of Poussin suggests a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johannes JANSSONIUS (1588-1664)
The map shows the island divided into tribes and lots, and below the map itself appear the coats of arms of Bermuda and England and the names of the first proprietors and the number of shares assigned each. A most attractive variant on the Norwood survey map. The 'Sea Venture' under Sir George Somers was wrecked off Bermuda in 1609 and the surviving Englishmen divided the island into Tribes (later Parishes) and Shares, which are individually listed with their owners at the foot of the map. The map's Latin title, Mappa Aestivarum Insularum, means Summer (or Somers) Island for its first leader. Shortly afterwards the Bermudas were granted to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rara. Etching, circa 1640, unsigned. Magnificent proof, rich tone, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, with narrow margins, small wormholes perfectly restored at the bottom, otherwise in excellent condition. The works is a counterpart copy of rare etching by Ribera, in the example of the second state, bearing the initials of the engraver, publisher and print dealer Flemish Frans van den Wyngaerde (1614-1679). The print shows a man suffering from Alzheimer's Reclinghausen (neuro fibromatosis multiple) which is manifested by the appearance of large benign tumors. Johannes JANSSONIUS (1588-1664)
Coloritura coeva, in ottime condizioni. An attractive map of the Eastern African and the fictitious kingdom of Prester John. The map shows a major section of central and eastern Africa including Mozambique north to present day Sudan The map contains numerous coastal place names such as Mozambique Island, Quiloa, Mombaza, and Melinde indicating the importance of the area to both Arab, Portuguese, and traders and explorers from other countries. The Congo region on the west coast of Africa is included in this map. The two Ptolemaic lakes of Zaire and Zaflan are in the lower portion of the map. Lake Niger, and the supposed course of the Niger River, is shown flowing westward. This map is based on Ortelius' map of Prester John of 1573. The myth of Prester John, the good king defeating the enemies of Christianity, was in part a response to Mongol and Islamic pressures on Christian Europe. Initially, Prester John was placed in Asia, but later in East Africa. The center of the map above ,Amara mons,, the kingdom of Prester John, shows a note in Latin to the effect that here the sons are Prester John are held in confinement.

Johannes JANSSONIUS (1588-1664)
Incisione in rame, finemente colorata a mano, in ottime condizioni. "An important map of South East Asia, noteworthy for being amongst the first maps to include any information on the discoveries made by the Dutch vessel Duyfkens in New Guinea and the Gulf of Carpentaria in 1605-6. The map also includes Malaysia, Vietnam, the East India Islands, Philippines and Southern China as far as the Pearl River estuary. After Mercator's death, Jodocus Hondius continued publication of Gerhard Mercator's ""Atlas"" project from 1606 when he engraved new, and republished earlier, maps by the great cartographer. These maps formed the basis for one of the major multi-volume atlas projects of the century with maps republished by Jan Jansson and other Dutch publishers over 50 years later. This map, from a Latin text edition, was engraved by Jan Jansson and published from 1630. Copperplate, with fine later hand colour, very good condition." C. Quirino, Philippine Cartography, p. 104

Acquaforte e puntasecca, datata e firmata in lastra in basso a destra "Rembrandt f. 1640". BESLER, Basil (1561-1629)
Eichstatt, 1640. Hand-coloured engraving. Basil Besler published "Hortus Eystettensis", the earliest large folio botanical, at Eichstatt near Nuremburg, in 1613. He worked on the drawings for the 374 copper engravings over a period of sixteen years using the plants in the garden of Bishop Johann Conrad von Gemmingen, his patron. Depicted in this florilegium were flowers, herbs, vegetables and newly discovered plants such as tobacco and peppers. Besler was, in modern terms, a botanist and horticulturalist, and he was familiar with real and alleged medicinal properties of various plants. Besler had the good fortune to live at a time when exotic plants were being shipped to Europe from all over the world. The garden that he organized and illustrated for his patron was both ornamental and experimental, and the large book he had engraved after his drawings was unique. The prints, made by a team of master engravers, are strong and exquisitely done.

1640. London: T. Cotes, 1640. Jus Divinum or Jus Divinum Regum? Carter, John. Vindiciae Decimarum. Of Tithes, A Plea for the Ius Divinum. Drawne from the Text. London: T. Cotes, 1640. (iv), 56 pp. First leaf blank. Quarto (7" x 5-1/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound into recent period-style quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt title to spine, endpapers added. Title page printed in red and black within typographical border. Moderate toning occasional light soiling or staining to margins, faint early pen doodle to foot of final page. An appealing copy. $500. * Only edition. Ostensibly an academic study of tithes, this is a response to the opening phase of the intense conflict between Charles I and the Church of Scotland that would help push England into its civil war. Charles wanted to bring the Scottish church under state control and align its practices and creed with those of the Church of England. In 1638 Charles's opponents, or Covenanters, who drawn mostly from the Scottish nobility and clergy, declared their commitment to keep the church away from state control. The notion of tithes was a central point; the Covenanters argued for Jus Divinum, a belief that tithes are paid to the church. Charles believed in Jus Divinum Regum, which directed tithes to a state church through a monarch. OCLC and the ESTC locate no copies in North American law libraries. 1640. [Classic Literature] ~ OVID. GOWER, John Ovid's festivalls, or Romane Calendar, Translated into English verse equinumerally [Cambridge]. Printed by Roger Daniel, Printer to the University of Cambridge: And are to be sold by M[ichael] S[parke] junior, 1640. 8vo. [42], 146pp, [2]. With an initial leaf, blank except for a fleuron, and a terminal imprimatur leaf. Title in red and black. Later blind-tooled calf, gilt. Extremities worn, insect damage, surface loss, and marking to boards. Shelf-label of the Porkington Library to FEP, occasional ink-spotting, family chronology to recto of initial blank leaf, pen-trials to title-page, p.146, and imprimatur leaf. The first translation into English of Ovid's Fasti, done by Master of Arts John Gower, graduate of Jesus College, Cambridge. The dedication, to John Etheridge, Vicar of Halstead, Essex and former fellow of Queen's College Cambridge (1615-1626), is signed Edward Alliston and suggests that the work was printed posthumously. Thereafter follows an epistle in tribute to the translator signed Isaac Tinckler, which contains the somewhat condescending line: 'Now Ovid hath his wish, that he may be / In English read upon a Ladies knee.' The work includes a life of the Roman poet, as well as an adaptation of 'Clio's complaint for the death of Ovid'. A concurrently printed variant (STC 18948.5) omits Sparke's name in imprint. BAKER, Richard
London: Thomas Paine, 1640. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. An incredibly rare and important 17th-century treatise on prayer, how to pray, and spiritual discipline. Richard Baker was a 16th-century English Protestant historian who chronicled the royals of England as well as a curious meditation on prayer. 'Meditations and Disquisitions Upon the Lords Prayer' was first published in 1637 and was written to instruct the importance of prayer in one's spiritual life. Baker even notes the importance of praying aloud in order "to fright the devil. For, he sees not our hearts, but he hears our tongues: and when he hears our words...he fears they come from our hearts, in that fear he trembles!" (p.6).

Alcoforado, Mariana
1640. First Czech edition. In original illustrated hard paper. Untrimmed as published. Illustrated title page. Decorated with numerous woodcut tail-pieces and initials. Pages ruled by brown frame. Three chromolithographs by Franti?ek Kysela mounted on black paper with the original patterned tissue guards. A scarce Czech edition with beautiful Art Nouveau illustrations. Mariana Alcoforado (1640-1723) was a Portuguese nun. This book contains five love letters of her, addressed to Noël Bouton, the Marquis of Chamilly, which gained fame as the "Lettres portugaises" (1669). Exists a debate on the author's identity: although a real nun existed under the name Mariana Alcoforado, some argued the work is a product of Gabriel-Joseph de Lavergne, comte de Guilleragues (1628-1684), who was a French politician of the 17th century. A rare, richly illustrated Czech book. In original illustrated hard paper. Untrimmed as published. Illustrated title page. Decorated with numerous woodcut tail-pieces and initials. Pages ruled by brown frame. Three chromolithographs by Franti?ek Kysela mounted on black paper with the original patterned tissue guards [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

BLAEU WILLEM
1640. Incisione in rame, colorata d'epoca, mm 377x493. Ottimo esemplare.
