Botero, Giovanni
Venice, Giunta. 4to. (8), 800, (36) pp. With 4 folding engr. plates (Europe, Asia, Africa, America). (Bound with) II: The same. Della ragioni di stato, libri dieci. Ibid., 1640. (8), 264 pp. Contemp. vellum with ms. spine title. Famous geographical treatise by Giovanni Botero (1544-1617), with Arabia pictured on both the Asia and the Africa plate, and discussions of the Arabian Peninsula (pp. 120 ff.), the Middle East (pp. 123 ff.), "Arabia troglodotica" [!] (p. 130 f.), Egypt (pp. 131 ff.). Originally conceived as a statistical examination of the ecumenical propagation of Christianity, in subsequent editions the work gradually expanded until it formed a comprehensive repertory of anthropology and geography, with systematic accounts of the physical properties, demographics, economic resources, military power, and political constitution of all states of the world. - Appended to this is Botero's famous treatise "Della ragion di Stato" (The Reason of State), in which Botero argues - against Machiavelli - that a prince's power must be based on some form of consent of his subjects, and princes must make every effort to win the people's affection and admiration. - Some browning throughout; occasional insignificant edge defects and small tears; traces of old library stamps. - Graesse I, 504. Cf. Cox I, 71.

Riojano, Jorge Antonio
en la Imprenta Real (a costa de Gabriel Leo?n, Mercader de libros), En Madrid, 1640. Scarce second edition (first in 1633). In contemporary vellum. Spine lettered in ink. (16), (1)-481, (15) p. Page 39 and 132 misnumbered. A scarce collection of Franciscan sermons, among them "Sermon de los veynte y tres martyres del Japón, estando descubierto el Santissimo Sacramento" (pp. 206-226), the oration for the twenty-three Franciscan martyrs who were publicly crucified at Nagasaki in 1597. The incident is known as the first lethal persecution of Christians in Japan. The Catholic missionary activities began in Japan in the early 1540s, by the Jesuit, Dominican and Franciscan orders. The Christian missions enjoyed success in this early period due to the trade opportunities with Europe which was offered through them for Japan. At its heights, by the end of the sixteen century, Japan is estimated to have had around 300,000 Christians. The situation dramatically changed when Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598; in contemporary Christian sources named as Tayco sama, here: Taycocama) reunified Japan, thus became concerned about potential decentralizing factors, such as foreign religion. He saw Catholicism as a threat and the persecution of the Catholics started in 1587. The incident of the San Felipe in 1596, a shipwreck of the Spanish ship in Japan, was understood by Hideyoshi as a Spanish attempt to infiltrate the country before an eventual military conquest. This led to the crucifixion of twenty-six Catholics, twenty-three of them were Franciscans. The present sermon was written for them, a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Law. England.) [BRETON (John le, Bishop of Hereford)]
Printed by the assignes of Iohn Moore, 1640. 1 vol. bound in 2, interleaved, and annotated, with the Corrections divided between the volumes more or less as approriate (the 21 folios below), woodcut printer's device on title, main text (in Law French) in black letter, ff. [xvi], 64, 66-175, 175-238, 240-249, 245-287, [21], small 8vo, old calf, rebacked, corners very worn, sound. 'Britton' was first published in 1533, and edition which Wingate says is 'quite worn out, and exceeding full of manifest Imperfections.' The treatise is traditionally attributed to the Bishop of Hereford (d. 1275), but is largely derived from Bracton. There is an early ownership inscription, longitudinal, by the fore-margin of the title of a member of the Middle Temple, and another at the top of the title, 'Ed. Hatton, 17 Jan [18]17', the latter being the annotator. His notes, or quite often queries, are not all that prolific, but they do extend through the entire work. The previous owner, who signs himself 'Johannis Georgii', must be the John Georges (of Cirencester) who was admitted to Middle Temple 1st July 1615, then was called to the Bar in May 1623, made a Bencher in November 1651, and Treasurer in 1658 (with thanks to Renae Satterley of Middle Temple Library for this identification). Jansson
Amsterdam c1640 copper engraved map; 39 x 50 cm ; exc. cond. Beautifully decorated map of the East Indies with a nice large cartouche, vignette, scales and 2 windroses. This is one of Jansson's historically most important maps, first published in 1630, being the first map to show evidence of the route taken by the ?Duyfken?, the ship that discovered Australia. The Dutch East India Company had placed a secrecy order on Blaeu, their official cartographer. It is assumed that Jansson either had access to the original map used by the ?Duyfken? or the Hessel Gerritz? map of the Pacific. Beneath New Guinea 'Duyfkens Eyland' is marked. Jansson belonged to the influential map publishing Dutch family, publishing first in Arnhem, then later in Amsterdam. In 1612, he married the daughter of Jodocus Hondius and Colette van den Keere as well as starting up his own business in Amsterdam where he published atlases, maps and globes. In the same year, his father-in-law died and he assisted his widowed mother-in-law with the publication of the Mercator/Hondius atlas. After her and her son?s, Jodocus the Younger, death, Jansson together with his brother-in-law, Henricus Hondius, revised the atlas which, from 1638 onwards, became known as ?Atlas Novus? and was published in several languages over many years. From the early 1640s, Jansson continued on his own to expand the ?Atlas? which then became known as ?Atlas Maior? with editions in Dutch, French, Latin, German ad English. [ref: 1996 ]

This is a special map for collectors of Chinese and Asian maps and is historically interesting for historians of Asia. Our maps are well packed and sent registered air mail and insured. Castillo Solorzano (Alonso de)
Iayme Romeu sold also by Iuan Zapera, 1640. FIRST EDITION, woodcut vignette on title, repeated at the end of the 5th novela in an inferior impression, lacking terminal blank (Palau calls for 2 blanks, but 1 makes bibliographical sense), extensive paper repairs in first 2 and last 2 gatherings, diminishing to mere corner reinforcements soon enough, but with some letters printed or stamped in facsimile in new areas of paper, 2 gatherings pinked (rather than browned), one less than the other, ff. [iii], 191 (R8 blank), small 8vo, resewn and bound in fairly modern Spanish vellum over boards, ink lettering on spine. A rare book: the second edition, the following year, is as rare. Alonso deCastillo Solorzano (1584?–1647?), Spanish novelist and playwright, is stated to have been baptized at Tordesillas near Valladolid on 1st October 1584. Nothing is known of his youth, and he is next heard of at Madrid in 1619 as a man of literary tastes. While in the service of the marquis de Villar, he issued his first work, Donaires del Parnaso (1624–1625), two volumes of humorous poems; his Tardes entretenidas (1625) and Jornadas alegres (1626) proved that he was a novelist by vocation. Shortly afterwards he joined the household of the marquis de los Vélez, Viceroy of Valencia, and published in quick succession three clever picaresque novels: La Niña de los embustes, Teresa de Manzanares (1634), Las Aventuras del Bachiller Trapaza (1637), and a continuation entitled La Garduña de Sevilla y Anzuelo de las bolsas (1642). To these shrewd cynical stories he owes his reputation. He followed the mar … [Click Below for Full Description]

William Lithgow
London: I Okes, 1640. Boards off: text complete but missing title page and index (see photos): great woodcuts and decorated capitals. William Lithgow was a Scottish writer and traveller who wrote of his various journeys to most of Europe, Greece, Palestine and Egypt as well as a sojourn in Malaga, where he was arrested and tortured as a spy by the Spanish Inquisition. The text in this copy is complete but the boards are off and the title page and dedication to the king are gone, replaced with facsimile copies as is the index at the rear of the text (please see photos). There is foxing and discoloration of the paper due to age. On the spare at the front is the name "C.I. Ridley/1849) and in the upper corner is written "scarce/title page wanting". There are some other places where there is writing (again, please see photos) but nothing that interferes with the text--there is a name written and an occasional comment on the text. The illustrations are clever woodcuts depicting Lithgow in various costumes as well as an occasional landscape. There are multiple decorated capitals and publisher's decorations throughout. There is also a corner of page 131 the name "Anne Tyndall", "Anne ??outhe Tyndale" as what appears to be a doodle. Please do not hesitate to ask questions or for more pictures. Acceptable Condition: 8vo: (5 3/4" x 7 1/2"); full leather with boards off and splits to the spine: embossed tulip at bottom corner near spine with incised lines outlining the front and rear: missing title pages and the epistle to the king at front, replaced by facsimile: missing index at rea … [Click Below for Full Description]

It is difficult to overestimate the importance of the Year Books. They are the first examples of common-law court reporting and crucial primary sources for our knowledge of medieval common law. They also provide a richly detailed portrait of contemporary English life, customs and manners. Though it is not known when the first manuscript volumes were compiled, it is clear that cases can be found to date from the 1270's and the series continues to 1535. Printed editions of the Year Books were first issued by William de Machlinia between 1481 and 1482. The present volume is from the so-called "quarto edition." BLAEU, Willem Janszoon.
Amsterdam, 1638 or 1640, French text edition. Original colour. 415 x 560mm. Repaired tear in top edge, otherwise a very fine example. One of the most famous maps of the Americas, a 'carte-a-figures' with 10 costume vignettes down the sides and nine city prospects along the top. Originally published separately in 1617, the extremely rare first state did not show Cape Horn. Within a year Jacob le Maire returned from his trip around the Cape and his new information was added to the plate. A second change was implemented in 1621 when Willem Janszoon added the 'Blaeu' to his name to distance himself from his arch-rival Jan Janszoon, so his new name was added under the title. Two more states, both just minor embellishments, appeared in the 1640s, before the plate was destroyed in the fire at the Blaeu printing works in 1672. BURDEN: 189, state 3 of 5. Willem Janszoon BLAEU
Amsterdam, 1640. The map is based on the first state of Smith's map, 1612, and is slightly larger and more expertly engraved. In 1629 the Hondius plate was purchased by Blaeu who deleted Hondius' name and added his own to the imprint, constituting the second state. The map is, in part, famous for its depiction, upper left, of Chief Powhatan, waving his tobacco pipe, and seated, as the caption says, in state when Capt. John Smith was … [Click Below for Full Description]

Oxford: Printed by Leonard Lichfield, printer to the University, for Robert Young (London) and Edward Forrest (Oxford), 1640. FIRST COMPLETE & EXPANDED ENGLISH EDITION, SECOND PRINTING (second issue, STC 1167.3, with a colophon of MDCXXXX [1640], and no unengraved title page) Francis Bacon, 1st Viscount Saint Alban, (1561 - 1626) was an English philosopher, statesman, scientist, lawyer, jurist and author. He has remained extremely influential through his written works, especially as philosophical advocate and practitioner of the scientific method. Bacon is considered one of the fathers of modern science. He proposed a great reformation of all processes of knowledge for the advancement of learning, which he called the 'Instauratio Magna,' or the 'Great Instauration,' planning this in imitation of the Biblical work of the six days of divine creation. In early Virginia, copies of Bacon's work are recorded in the libraries of William Byrd of Westover, John Mercer of Marlborough, and also in the great library compiled by Thomas Jefferson. 'Of Proficience and Advancement of Learning Divine and Human' was first published in 1605, in the form of a letter to King James, and was considered the first step in Bacon's Great Instauration scale, of 'partitions of the sciences.' Ovid
London: Printed by J.L. for Andrew Hebb, 1640. Fourth edition of the Sandys translation. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Ovid, additional engraved title-page by Salamon Savery after Francisco Clein, and 15 engraved plates. Folio. Penned on the Banks of the James River, Virginia, 1626. Sandys' translation of the Metamorphosis is of special note as being the first major poetic production to come from American soil. Sandys became Treasurer of the Virginia Company in 1621 and sailed to America with the Governor, Sir Francis Wyatt. Before leaving, he had started the translation, but it was on the banks the James River that he finally finished it in 1626, dedicating it to Charles I. According to Kunitz and Haycraft, "he seems to have been of rather a quarrelsome disposition, and after many differences with his fellow members and with his neighbors he returned to England for good in 1631." His Ovid remained a very popular translation for over a century after his time, and greatly admired by Pope. This was the last lifetime edition, and also contains the first book of his translation of Virgil's Aeneid. Sandys (pronounced 'Sands') died in 1644. A particularly attractive copy, bearing an early ownership signature ("Jo: Rawling"?) on the engraved title, dated 1654. STC 18968. Bound in full early twentieth-century red crushed levant morocco gilt, skillfully rebacked with the original spine laid down, by Stern & Dess, circa 1920. Portrait and engraved title slightly waterstained, the latter with one small closed tear repaired, else fine, in a brown cloth morocco-backed slipcase.

GERRITSZ, Hessel.
Amsterdam: Willem Blaeu, c.1640. Original colour. Six sheets conjoined, total 750 x 1060 mm Hessel Gerritsz's limpressive wall map of Lithuania and the Dniepr River, decoratated with several cartouches, ships and a compass rose in the Baltic. It was engraved by Gerritz in 1613 and originally issued separately but, like Gerritsz's map of Russia, was later purchased by Blaeu. Being on six sheets it was one of the Blaeu's largest atlas maps. Apparently there was only ever one state: the plate carries the signature 'Guilhelmus Janssonius', before Willem added the 'Blaeu' to distance himself from his rival Jan Jansson.

BESLER, Basil (1561-1629)
Eichstatt, 1640. Hand-coloured engraving. Basil Besler published his "Hortus Eystettensis", the earliest large folio botanical, at Eichstatt near Nuremburg, in 1613. He worked on the drawings for the 374 copper engravings over a period of sixteen years from the plants in the garden of Bishop Johann Vonrad von Gemmingen, his patron. Depicted in this florilegium were flowers, herbs, vegetables and "exotic" plants such as tobacco and peppers.Besler was, in modern terms, a botanist and horticulturalist, in medieval terms, he was a healer. He and his brothers were familiar with real and alleged medicinal properties of the different plants. Besler had the good fortune to have lived at a time when exotic plants were being shipped to Europe from all over the world. The garden that he organized and illustrated for his patron was both ornamental and experimental, and the large book he had engraved after his drawings was unique. The prints, made by a team of master engravers, are strong and exquisitely done.

Willem Janszoon BLAEU (Uitgeest 1571- Amsterdam 1638)
Blaeu's map of the southeastern portion of North America. The map depicts the region from present day northern Florida to Chesapeake Bay. France is shown as governing the southern portion of this land (though they had been forced out in fact some time before by the Spanish) and Great Britain as ruler of the northeast. As pointed out by Burden, this map improves on the Hondius-Mercator map of the same region, and it provided the best depiction of the region until 1700. Its handsome cartouche surrounded by full figure Native Americans and its elaborate calligraphy contribute to make it one of the most artistically successful maps of 17th century America. Copperplate with fine later hand colour, very good condition. Cumming, 41; Burden, The Mapping of North America, 253; Goss, 31
