William Lithgow
London: I Okes, 1640. Boards off: text complete but missing title page and index (see photos): great woodcuts and decorated capitals. William Lithgow was a Scottish writer and traveller who wrote of his various journeys to most of Europe, Greece, Palestine and Egypt as well as a sojourn in Malaga, where he was arrested and tortured as a spy by the Spanish Inquisition. The text in this copy is complete but the boards are off and the title page and dedication to the king are gone, replaced with facsimile copies as is the index at the rear of the text (please see photos). There is foxing and discoloration of the paper due to age. On the spare at the front is the name "C.I. Ridley/1849) and in the upper corner is written "scarce/title page wanting". There are some other places where there is writing (again, please see photos) but nothing that interferes with the text--there is a name written and an occasional comment on the text. The illustrations are clever woodcuts depicting Lithgow in various costumes as well as an occasional landscape. There are multiple decorated capitals and publisher's decorations throughout. There is also a corner of page 131 the name "Anne Tyndall", "Anne ??outhe Tyndale" as what appears to be a doodle. Please do not hesitate to ask questions or for more pictures. Acceptable Condition: 8vo: (5 3/4" x 7 1/2"); full leather with boards off and splits to the spine: embossed tulip at bottom corner near spine with incised lines outlining the front and rear: missing title pages and the epistle to the king at front, replaced by facsimile: missing index at rea … [Click Below for Full Description]

It is difficult to overestimate the importance of the Year Books. They are the first examples of common-law court reporting and crucial primary sources for our knowledge of medieval common law. They also provide a richly detailed portrait of contemporary English life, customs and manners. Though it is not known when the first manuscript volumes were compiled, it is clear that cases can be found to date from the 1270's and the series continues to 1535. Printed editions of the Year Books were first issued by William de Machlinia between 1481 and 1482. The present volume is from the so-called "quarto edition." Willem Janszoon BLAEU
Amsterdam, 1640. BLAEU, Willem Janszoon.
Amsterdam, 1638 or 1640, French text edition. Original colour. 415 x 560mm. Repaired tear in top edge, otherwise a very fine example. One of the most famous maps of the Americas, a 'carte-a-figures' with 10 costume vignettes down the sides and nine city prospects along the top. Originally published separately in 1617, the extremely rare first state did not show Cape Horn. Within a year Jacob le Maire returned from his trip around the Cape and his new information was added to the plate. A second change was implemented in 1621 when Willem Janszoon added the 'Blaeu' to his name to distance himself from his arch-rival Jan Janszoon, so his new name was added under the title. Two more states, both just minor embellishments, appeared in the 1640s, before the plate was destroyed in the fire at the Blaeu printing works in 1672. BURDEN: 189, state 3 of 5. Willem Janszoon BLAEU
Amsterdam, 1640. The map is based on the first state of Smith's map, 1612, and is slightly larger and more expertly engraved. In 1629 the Hondius plate was purchased by Blaeu who deleted Hondius' name and added his own to the imprint, constituting the second state. The map is, in part, famous for its depiction, upper left, of Chief Powhatan, waving his tobacco pipe, and seated, as the caption says, in state when Capt. John Smith was … [Click Below for Full Description]

Francis Bacon
Of the Advancement and Proficience of Learning, or the Partitions of Sciences. IX Bookes. Written in Latin by the Most Eminent Illustrious & Famous Lord Francis Bacon, Baron of Verulam Vicont St Alban Counsilour of Estate and Lord Chancellor of England. Oxford: Printed by Leonard Lichfield, printer to the University, for Robert Young (London) and Edward Forrest (Oxford), 1640. FIRST COMPLETE & EXPANDED ENGLISH EDITION, SECOND PRINTING (second issue, STC 1167.3, with a colophon of MDCXXXX [1640], and no unengraved title page) Francis Bacon, 1st Viscount Saint Alban, (1561 - 1626) was an English philosopher, statesman, scientist, lawyer, jurist and author. He has remained extremely influential through his written works, especially as philosophical advocate and practitioner of the scientific method. Bacon is considered one of the fathers of modern science. He proposed a great reformation of all processes of knowledge for the advancement of learning, which he called the 'Instauratio Magna,' or the 'Great Instauration,' planning this in imitation of the Biblical work of the six days of divine creation. In early Virginia, copies of Bacon's work are recorded in the libraries of William Byrd of Westover, John Mercer of Marlborough, and also in the great library compiled by Thomas Jefferson. 'Of Proficience and Advancement of Learning Divine and Human' was first published in 1605, in the form of a letter to King James, and was considered the first step in Bacon's Great Instauration scale, of 'partitions of the sciences.' The work was expanded, rewritten in Latin, and published in 16 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ovid
London: Printed by J.L. for Andrew Hebb, 1640. Fourth edition of the Sandys translation. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Ovid, additional engraved title-page by Salamon Savery after Francisco Clein, and 15 engraved plates. Folio. Penned on the Banks of the James River, Virginia, 1626. Sandys' translation of the Metamorphosis is of special note as being the first major poetic production to come from American soil. Sandys became Treasurer of the Virginia Company in 1621 and sailed to America with the Governor, Sir Francis Wyatt. Before leaving, he had started the translation, but it was on the banks the James River that he finally finished it in 1626, dedicating it to Charles I. According to Kunitz and Haycraft, "he seems to have been of rather a quarrelsome disposition, and after many differences with his fellow members and with his neighbors he returned to England for good in 1631." His Ovid remained a very popular translation for over a century after his time, and greatly admired by Pope. This was the last lifetime edition, and also contains the first book of his translation of Virgil's Aeneid. Sandys (pronounced 'Sands') died in 1644. A particularly attractive copy, bearing an early ownership signature ("Jo: Rawling"?) on the engraved title, dated 1654. STC 18968. Bound in full early twentieth-century red crushed levant morocco gilt, skillfully rebacked with the original spine laid down, by Stern & Dess, circa 1920. Portrait and engraved title slightly waterstained, the latter with one small closed tear repaired, else fine, in a brown cloth morocco-backed slipcase.

BESLER, Basil (1561-1629)
Eichstatt, 1640. Hand-coloured engraving. Basil Besler published his "Hortus Eystettensis", the earliest large folio botanical, at Eichstatt near Nuremburg, in 1613. He worked on the drawings for the 374 copper engravings over a period of sixteen years from the plants in the garden of Bishop Johann Vonrad von Gemmingen, his patron. Depicted in this florilegium were flowers, herbs, vegetables and "exotic" plants such as tobacco and peppers.Besler was, in modern terms, a botanist and horticulturalist, in medieval terms, he was a healer. He and his brothers were familiar with real and alleged medicinal properties of the different plants. Besler had the good fortune to have lived at a time when exotic plants were being shipped to Europe from all over the world. The garden that he organized and illustrated for his patron was both ornamental and experimental, and the large book he had engraved after his drawings was unique. The prints, made by a team of master engravers, are strong and exquisitely done.

Willem Janszoon BLAEU (Uitgeest 1571- Amsterdam 1638)
Blaeu's map of the southeastern portion of North America. The map depicts the region from present day northern Florida to Chesapeake Bay. France is shown as governing the southern portion of this land (though they had been forced out in fact some time before by the Spanish) and Great Britain as ruler of the northeast. As pointed out by Burden, this map improves on the Hondius-Mercator map of the same region, and it provided the best depiction of the region until 1700. Its handsome cartouche surrounded by full figure Native Americans and its elaborate calligraphy contribute to make it one of the most artistically successful maps of 17th century America. Copperplate with fine later hand colour, very good condition. Cumming, 41; Burden, The Mapping of North America, 253; Goss, 31

"Wilkins's work on lunar inhabitants and interplanetary travel had a greater influence on literature than on science. With the possible exception of Fontenelle's CONVERSATIONS ON THE PLURALITY OF WORLDS, which was itself based on Wilkins's publications, THE DISCOVERY was the chief source of the wide literary currency given these ideas. The late seventeenth and early eighteenth century witnessed an outburst of plays and poems based on the idea of a plurality of worlds and lunar flights. Pietro TESTA detto "Il Lucchesino" (Lucca 1611 - Roma 1650)
[Click Below for Full Description]

SUMMARY: His Theatrum Botanicum (The Botanical Theatre) described 3,800 plants and focused more on medicinal plants. It became the standard for English apothecaries for 100 years. He sought information and specimens from correspondents throughout the world and created a work based on observation and data collection rather than information based on older works. It was the first work to describe 33 native plants, 13 of which grew near Parkinson's Middlesex home. Some of these plants, such as the Welsh poppy, the Strawberry Tree and the Lady's Slipper, were very common but had gone unnoticed or at least unrecorded. William Marshall's elaborate frontispiece for Theatrum Botanicum is divided into three registers. At the top and bottom, allegorical figures appear against a backdrop of fantastical garden imagery. The rhinoceros in the upper left may refer to the coat of arms of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries founded by John Parkinson in 1617. Parkinson, whos … [Click Below for Full Description]

BLAEU WILLEM
