Asia antique map - Willem Blaeu, 1640
1640. MAP OF ASIA "Asia Noviter Delineata." Carte-a-figures by Willem Blaeu depicting the native manners of dress, and nine city plans and views at the top.Copper engraving printed in 1640, coloured by a later hand. Size 41 x 55,2 cm. A fine example of Willem Blaeu's famous map of Asia. Like the Blaeu Africa map, this is a map that appeals both to a sense of cartographic history and to an aesthetic sense of beauty. This is a cornerstone, folio-size map of Asia and is one of the better known, more decorative maps of Asia of the 17th century. This map is basically a reduction of Blaeu's wallmap of Asia of 1608. The map contains extensive details on what was known of Asia in the early 17th century. Korea is still an enlonged island. Japan has a predominantly east to west direction. In China, the Great Wall is shown along with the in-land lakes. Willem Janszoon, or Willem Jansz Blaeu (1571-1638) as he is more commonly known, was one of the most noted Dutch cartographers and map publisher of the 17th century. Blaeu's maps are "esteemed by collectors for their decorative quality, historical importance, and as the highest expression of Dutch cartographic art during the period of its supremacy" (Tooley, p 28). After preparation as a pupil of the great Danish astronomer,Tycho Brahe, Blaeu initially concentrated on globe making and separately published maps, including wall maps of the continents. From 1608, he dominated the market for sea atlases and in 1630 produced his terrestrial atlas. These atlases were continued by his sons, culminating in the great Atlas Maior of 1662 in 11 vo … [Click Below for Full Description]

MANZINI
à Paris: 1640. MANZINI Giovani Battista - Les harangues academiques MANZINI Giovani Battista Les harangues academiques Chez Augustin Courbé, à Paris 1640, Fort in-8 (11x17,4cm), relié. Edition originale, rare. *** [English translation available upon request.
3. 5. Size: 41 x 55,5 cm. In handsome walnut frame. This is a cornerstone map of Africa and is one of the better known, more decorative maps of Africa of the seventeenth century. The map shows major African towns across the top: Tangiers, Ceuta, Algiers, Tunis, Alexandria, Cairo, the island of Mozambique, The Mine at St. George in Guinea and Canaria in the Canary Islands. The body of the map is richly embellished with animals, including elephants, monkeys, ostriches, gazelles, lions, cheetahs and camels. Much of the geographical information is still based on the Ptolemaic maps, with the Nile shown with its source in the Lakes Zaire and Zaflan. Also included are various other mythical lakes and rivers including the famous Lake Sachaf. Only coastal towns are named on the Cape, with the printing covering much of the unknown territory. Theodoro [Theodore] Beza; Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins, etc.
London/Ludgate: Rob Young / G.M. for the Companie of Stationers, 1640. Two significant 17th century religious works in one pocket-sized volume. First, a Latin translation of the New Testament. Theodore Beza was a French Reformed Protestant theologian and scholar, who played a principal role in the Reformation, succeeding John Calvin as spiritual leader of the Republic of Geneva. As well as a number of important contributions to historical and theological writings, he also made an important contribution to Biblical scholarship publishing both a Greek and Latin version of the New Testament. This work, a later edition of his Latin New Testament is is noted for the emphasis on predestination which was a prevalent school of thought in Reformation theology. An important Latin translation by a noted Reformation theologian and academic. Second is “The Whole Book of Psalmes: Collected into English Meeter by Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins and Others.” London: Printed by G.M. for the Companie of Stationers. 1640. 99 pp. followed by excerpts from the Book of Common Prayers, 7 pp. index. Sternhold and Hopkins’s Book of Psalmes was essentially the authorized psalter of the Church of England, with some 200 different editions printed between the mid-sixteenth to the mid-seventeenth century. The Sternhold and Hopkins text was frequently appended to editions of the Geneva Bible and the Book of Common Prayer and was the first book published in America [The Bay Book of Psalms; published the same year in Cambridge MA.] . Parkinson, John
London: Thomas Cotes, 1640. First edition. Large thick folio, title page, dedication page, preface two pages, author's tributes ten pages, then (ii), 1734 (but actually slightly less as there are several errors of pagination), illustrated with over 2,100 woodcut figures, lacking the extra engraved title page, the 20-page addenda at the rear and the errata leaf, but otherwise complete and very sound. The contents are extremely clean and tight, there is the odd crease and an occasional tiny corner missing but overall in impressive condition. The front and rear endpapers are a little browned and marked, both front and rear hinges are cracked and showing a little silver-fish damage but there is no weakness at all. Full panelled calf, probably eighteenth century but possibly earlier, a little rubbed, a little worn at the edges, scuffed on the upper cover, rebacked fairly recently with a leather spine and red morocco label. Blanche Henrey 286. { Very heavy - extra postage will be required.}. [John Parkinson (1567 - 1650) was both the last of the great English herbalists and one of the first of the great English botanists. He was apothecary to James I and a founding member of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries in December 1617, and was later Royal Botanist to Charles I. The Theatrum was the most complete and beautifully presented English treatise on plants of its time.
1640. Acquaforte mm 248 x 329. Heinecke 10; Huber 481; Zani Parte II, III pag. 62; B. 4; Nagler K-L II, p. 506, LB. 3.

Rara. Etching, circa 1640, unsigned. Magnificent proof, rich tone, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, with narrow margins, small wormholes perfectly restored at the bottom, otherwise in excellent condition. The works is a counterpart copy of rare etching by Ribera, in the example of the second state, bearing the initials of the engraver, publisher and print dealer Flemish Frans van den Wyngaerde (1614-1679). The print shows a man suffering from Alzheimer's Reclinghausen (neuro fibromatosis multiple) which is manifested by the appearance of large benign tumors. Dated March 22, 1640. Fort Amsterdam. Light handling marks, expected folds. Strong contrasting ink and sigantures. Two extremely early New York documents autographed by four of the first Dutch settlers of New Netherlands. The documents, which are back to back on the same sheet of paper, are signed by "Hamanus A. Looten could withhold his expenses. The document is written in Dutch, and translates as: "Before me, Cornelis van Tienhoven, secretary of New Netherland, in the presence of the undersigned witnesses, appeared Harman Myndertsen van de Bogaert, surgeon, who appoints and empowers, as he does hereby, Mr. Care! STCN 036718416; cf. Knuttel 5202 & 5205b; Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 242 (other editions). Early edition of the Dutch translation of a provisional agreement made between the Dutch States General and the Portuguese ambassador Francisco de Zousa Continho on the jurisdiction and territory of Fort Galle in Ceylon (Sri Lanka), one of the most important outposts both strategically and as a trading centre. The Dutch had captured it from the Portuguese in 1640 and they had been fighting in the region since that time. The treaty notes the losses and battles caused by the dispute between the two powers and the demands made by the Dutch government to secure their position in the East Indies. This includes their demand for a yearly supply of cinnamon, through which the Portuguese are to pay off their debt, and restitution by both parties for the losses they caused one another. The parties agree to honor the treaty and not trespass on each other's rights and territories. In very good condition.
