Giovanni Benedetto CASTIGLIONE detto "Il Grechetto"
Acquaforte, 1635 – 1640 ca, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra, 'GIO BENEDETTO Castiglione GENOVESE'. Etching, 1635 – 1640 ca, signed at lower left: 'GIO BENEDETTO Castiglione GENOVESE'. Second state, of four, with a black line, at the top in the sky, mesauring about 1 cm. Good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed close to platemark, very good condition. Depicted is a scene from the story of Jacob, in the book of Genesis (XXXI, 33 -35). After fleeing Laban’s house in the middle of the night, Jacob and his wives, Rachel and Leah, are overtaken by Laban, who searches for the household idols stolen by Rachel in an attempt to protect Jacob from another twenty years of labor under her father’s rule. According to Bellini, the influence of Poussin suggests a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pier Francesco MOLA
Engraving and etching, 1640 circa, inscribed with dedication and signed: ' Al M.to Ill.e e m.to R. P. Sig. mio Pron Oss.mo // Il P. re mro f. Baldassa Torresani Seruita [.] Pier fran.co Mola D.D.' Good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed close to platemark, occasional foxing, generally in good condition. After a painting by Francesco Albani last documented in the Yarborough Collection, Brocklesby Park. According to Bartsch, the angel leading the donkey was engraved later by an anonymous artist. Bartsch XIX.204.4; D'Amico and Bellini 1978, no. 16 315 472mm [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Castelli, Pietro
Basel, Franz Perna, 1640. 4to. Engraved t. p., (6), 51 (1) pp. Written space ruled throughout. Marbled boards. Early botanical study of the Balsam of Mecca (Balm of Gilead), a resinous gum of the tree Commiphora opobalsamum, native to southern Arabia. The resin was valued for use in medicine and perfume in ancient Greece and the Roman Empire; thus Pliny the Elder mentions it as one of the ingredients of the "Royal Perfume" of the Parthians in his "Naturalis Historia". - One of several editions published the same year; Perna himself produced another version without his imprint on the title page. "Concerns controversy with Antonio Manfredi and Vincenzio Panulio" (Krivatsy). - Born and educated at Rome, the surgeon and botanist Pietro Castelli (1574-1662) moved to Messina in 1634. Here, he laid out the botanical gardens, where he cultivated many exotic medicinal plants. - Heavy brownstaining throughout, still a good copy of this rare work. - VD 17, 1:062780A. Cf. Besler, Basilius (1561–1629)
copper engraved plate; overall size c 53 x 43 cm; plate size c 48 x 40 cm. 2nd edition. no text on verso. recent hand colouring.- A magnificent print from the ‘Hortus Eystettensis’ [The Garden of Eichstatt], one of the most amazing botanical books of the 17th century ever produced!- Basilius Besler, an apothecary and botanist from Nurnberg, was the curator of the prince bishop, Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, of Eichstätt in Bavaria. The bishop took great pride in the gardens of his palace, Willibaldsburg, which rivalled other magnificent gardens in Europe, and asked Besler to compile a codex of all the plants growing there which, initially, was started in 1596 and designed by Joachim Camerius the Younger (1534-1598). It took Besler 16 years to complete the task; unfortunately, the bishop died weeks before the publication of the Hortus. - The garden was sacked by Swedish troops in 1633/4 during the 30 Year War but re-opened in 1998 after reconstruction, following closely the outline of the book.- What makes the Hortus so unique is that instead of portraying medicinal or culinary plants, the emphasis was on garden flowers, herbs, vegetables and exotic plants. These were depicted almost life size with great detail, and arranged artistically and pleasing to even the modern eye, with an average of 3 plants on one sheet. This arrangement made up a total of 1084 plants on 367 copper engravings on 368 large folio sized sheets. - First published in 1613, 300 copies were printed which took over four years to sell. Two version were produced of the first edition: one with text on verso o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lake Niger, and the supposed course of the Niger River, is shown flowing westward. This map is based on Ortelius' map of Prester John of 1573. The myth of Prester John, the good Christian King of Africa waging his own crusade and defeating the enemies of Christianity, was based upon earlier legends of the Crusaders and is a fascinating piece of early mythological cartographic history KOEMAN: Bl 22. Botero, Giovanni
Venice, Giunta. 4to. (8), 800, (36) pp. With 4 folding engr. plates (Europe, Asia, Africa, America). (Bound with) II: The same. Della ragioni di stato, libri dieci. Ibid., 1640. (8), 264 pp. Contemp. vellum with ms. spine title. Famous geographical treatise by Giovanni Botero (1544-1617), with Arabia pictured on both the Asia and the Africa plate, and discussions of the Arabian Peninsula (pp. 120 ff.), the Middle East (pp. 123 ff.), "Arabia troglodotica" [!] (p. 130 f.), Egypt (pp. 131 ff.). Originally conceived as a statistical examination of the ecumenical propagation of Christianity, in subsequent editions the work gradually expanded until it formed a comprehensive repertory of anthropology and geography, with systematic accounts of the physical properties, demographics, economic resources, military power, and political constitution of all states of the world. - Appended to this is Botero's famous treatise "Della ragion di Stato" (The Reason of State), in which Botero argues - against Machiavelli - that a prince's power must be based on some form of consent of his subjects, and princes must make every effort to win the people's affection and admiration. - Some browning throughout; occasional insignificant edge defects and small tears; traces of old library stamps. - Graesse I, 504. Cf. Cox I, 71.

Riojano, Jorge Antonio
en la Imprenta Real (a costa de Gabriel Leo?n, Mercader de libros), En Madrid, 1640. Scarce second edition (first in 1633). In contemporary vellum. Spine lettered in ink. (16), (1)-481, (15) p. Page 39 and 132 misnumbered. A scarce collection of Franciscan sermons, among them "Sermon de los veynte y tres martyres del Japón, estando descubierto el Santissimo Sacramento" (pp. 206-226), the oration for the twenty-three Franciscan martyrs who were publicly crucified at Nagasaki in 1597. The incident is known as the first lethal persecution of Christians in Japan. The Catholic missionary activities began in Japan in the early 1540s, by the Jesuit, Dominican and Franciscan orders. The Christian missions enjoyed success in this early period due to the trade opportunities with Europe which was offered through them for Japan. At its heights, by the end of the sixteen century, Japan is estimated to have had around 300,000 Christians. The situation dramatically changed when Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598; in contemporary Christian sources named as Tayco sama, here: Taycocama) reunified Japan, thus became concerned about potential decentralizing factors, such as foreign religion. He saw Catholicism as a threat and the persecution of the Catholics started in 1587. The incident of the San Felipe in 1596, a shipwreck of the Spanish ship in Japan, was understood by Hideyoshi as a Spanish attempt to infiltrate the country before an eventual military conquest. This led to the crucifixion of twenty-six Catholics, twenty-three of them were Franciscans. The present sermon was written for them, a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Law. England.) [BRETON (John le, Bishop of Hereford)]
Printed by the assignes of Iohn Moore, 1640. 1 vol. bound in 2, interleaved, and annotated, with the Corrections divided between the volumes more or less as approriate (the 21 folios below), woodcut printer's device on title, main text (in Law French) in black letter, ff. [xvi], 64, 66-175, 175-238, 240-249, 245-287, [21], small 8vo, old calf, rebacked, corners very worn, sound. 'Britton' was first published in 1533, and edition which Wingate says is 'quite worn out, and exceeding full of manifest Imperfections.' The treatise is traditionally attributed to the Bishop of Hereford (d. 1275), but is largely derived from Bracton. There is an early ownership inscription, longitudinal, by the fore-margin of the title of a member of the Middle Temple, and another at the top of the title, 'Ed. Hatton, 17 Jan [18]17', the latter being the annotator. His notes, or quite often queries, are not all that prolific, but they do extend through the entire work. The previous owner, who signs himself 'Johannis Georgii', must be the John Georges (of Cirencester) who was admitted to Middle Temple 1st July 1615, then was called to the Bar in May 1623, made a Bencher in November 1651, and Treasurer in 1658 (with thanks to Renae Satterley of Middle Temple Library for this identification). Jansson
Amsterdam c1640 copper engraved map; 39 x 50 cm ; exc. cond. Beautifully decorated map of the East Indies with a nice large cartouche, vignette, scales and 2 windroses. This is one of Jansson's historically most important maps, first published in 1630, being the first map to show evidence of the route taken by the ?Duyfken?, the ship that discovered Australia. The Dutch East India Company had placed a secrecy order on Blaeu, their official cartographer. It is assumed that Jansson either had access to the original map used by the ?Duyfken? or the Hessel Gerritz? map of the Pacific. Beneath New Guinea 'Duyfkens Eyland' is marked. Jansson belonged to the influential map publishing Dutch family, publishing first in Arnhem, then later in Amsterdam. In 1612, he married the daughter of Jodocus Hondius and Colette van den Keere as well as starting up his own business in Amsterdam where he published atlases, maps and globes. In the same year, his father-in-law died and he assisted his widowed mother-in-law with the publication of the Mercator/Hondius atlas. After her and her son?s, Jodocus the Younger, death, Jansson together with his brother-in-law, Henricus Hondius, revised the atlas which, from 1638 onwards, became known as ?Atlas Novus? and was published in several languages over many years. From the early 1640s, Jansson continued on his own to expand the ?Atlas? which then became known as ?Atlas Maior? with editions in Dutch, French, Latin, German ad English. [ref: 1996 ]
