Castelli, Pietro.
Basel, Franz Perna, 1640. - 4to. Engraved t. p., (6), 51 (1) pp. Written space rules throughout. Marbled boards. Early botanical study of the Balsam of Mecca (Balm of Gilead), a resinous gum of the tree Commiphora opobalsamum, native to southern Arabia. The resin was valued in medicine and perfume in ancient Greece and the Roman Empire; thus Pliny the Elder mentions it as one of the ingredients of the "Royal Perfume" of the Parthians in his Naturalis Historia. - One of several editions published the same year; Perna himself produced another version without his imprint on the title page. "Concerns controversy with Antonio Manfredi and Vincenzio Panulio" (Krivatsy). - Born and educated at Rome, the surgeon and botanist Pietro Castelli (1574-1662) moved to Messina in 1634. Here, he laid out the botanical gardens at Messina, where he cultivated many exotic medicinal plants. - Heavy brownstaining throughout, still a good copy of this rare work. VD 17, 1:062780A. Cf. (ELZEVIER IMPRINT). PLINY THE YOUNGER
Lugduni Batavorum: Ex Officinâ Elseviriorum, 1640. First Elzevier Edition. Edited by Jean de Laet . Hardcover. 127 x 70 mm (5 x 2 3/4"). 12 p.l., [1]-289, 300-414 (i.e., 404) pp., [14] leaves. First Elzevier Edition. Edited by Jean de Laet. VERY PLEASING 18TH CENTURY CRIMSON MOROCCO, covers with triple gilt fillet border, raised bands, spine handsomely gilt in compartments with large central fleuron within a lozenge of small tools and volute cornerpieces, MATCHING MOROCCO DOUBLURES with intricate gilt dentelle, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Woodcut printer's device on title page, woodcut headpieces, initials, and tailpiece. Rahir 503; Willems 506. Leather a bit darkened in spots and with a hint of wear, occasional mild foxing, isolated rust spots, other trivial imperfections, but a really excellent copy, the binding very bright and showing almost no wear, and the text clean, fresh, and printed on better quality paper. The earliest Elzevier printing, this beautifully bound volume contains 10 books of epistles, along with the eulogy on the emperor Trajan, one of the two extant works of Pliny the Younger (62-113) studied for the incidental information it contains about the author and his times. The graceful, light, and charming letters touch on court activity, literature, matters of state, geography, current events, and a variety of other subjects (particularly interesting is Pliny's account of the eruption of Vesuvius in 79). Together, these epistles give an intimate portrait of Roman life and manners between 75 and 112, and a very different picture from that fou … [Click Below for Full Description]

RITTER, Franz
1640. Map. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 11.25" x 14". 1640. This imaginative world map by Franz Ritter, often referred to as the "Sundial Map," constitutes one of the most creative--if not bizarre--map projections proposed in the early 17th century. At a time when cartographers throughout Europe were devising new ways to depict the world on paper, Ritter, a German astronomer, first came up with this idea in 1610. This map is the second state, printed in 1640. It is projected from the North Pole, such that the land masses around it are laid out as if on the table of a sundial. In fact, Ritter developed the map to function specifically with regard to his home city of Nuremberg by drawing the Tropic of Capricorn to follow the shadow that the dial would cast at Nuremberg's latitude. The resulting map looks distorted, with lands increasing in size as they are further away from the Pole, but it actually maintains correct mathematical scale. Nonetheless, the projection failed to catch on, making this curious map the only known sundial projection. As such, it remains a beautiful and fascinating document of 17th century cartography. Continents, countries, cities and rivers are all labeled. Land masses are outlined crisply, and the expanded space of the southern continents created by the projection is filled with pictorial mountains and indigenous creatures. Ships, animals, and mythological beings also populate the seas. At the bottom of the map is a fine compass rose labeled with the winds. A rectangular floral frame includes the cardinal directions. The map is in exce … [Click Below for Full Description]

Two volumes bound in one. FIRST EDITION. Attractive contemporary German blindstamped pigskin, covers with multiple frames of palmette, medallion, and floral rolls, central panel with lozenge centerpiece formed by four fleurons, the same tool repeated in the corners, raised bands, (faded) ink titling on spine, remnants of green cloth ties. WITH 410 ENGRAVED ILLUSTRATIONS by Johann Wilhelm Dilich printed on 232 plates, 192 of these double-page, one a large folding plate. Cockle 832; Pollak, "Military Architecture, Cartography, and the Representation of the Early Modern European City: A Checklist of Treatises on Fortification in the Newberry Library," 14; Berlin Katalog 3526. A scattering of tiny brown flecks to upper board, light external wear and a hint of soiling, but the original binding completely solid and generally very well preserved. Text faintly browned and offset (as is common with German paper of this period), the majority of the plates with variable marginal foxing (mostly light, never severe), the fold-out plan with short tears and small patches of discoloration (one other plate partly torn along fold), other trivial imperfections, but still a very appealing copy internally because everything fresh, and the impressions of the plates extremely rich. This is a classic work on fortifications by the leading German authority of the perio … [Click Below for Full Description]

Along with Fleta, Britton is one of two significant law books produced during the reign of Edward I [1272-1307]. According to Francis Morgan Nichols, editor of the 3rd ed. (1865), it is a legal compilation with no known author, wrongly attributed to John Britton, or Le Breton, bishop of Hereford. The oldest English book in Law-French, it was probably a response to a wish of Edward I to produce a digest of the English law in the spirit of Justinian's Institutes. Book One outlines the authority of justices and officers and defines the nature of various personal pleas (including pleas of the crown). Book Two describes disseisins and their remedies. Book Three treats intrusions and their remedies. Book Four describes pleas relating to advowsons and the property of churches (and of attaints).
