Paul III did not want this as reforms could financially damage him and concessions could diminish his authority. The result was that two separate sections dealt with reform and doctrine simultaneously. The Council of Trent did mark a turning-point in the history of the Catholic Church as it gave Catholics a certainty about their own beliefs and practices that had been lacking and offered a firm base on which the spiritual life of the Catholic world could be reconst … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jansson, Jan
Amsterdam: , c1640. Copper engraved double page map, had colored in outline, large colored cartouche, 34.7 x 48. 3 cm (13 3/4" x 19"). Latin text on verso. Some aging and toning, verso repairs along center fold, and a few other places, tear at crease in lower portion of map, lower margin partially replaced below neat line, which is defective in one place; despite defects, an attractive map with a nice impression. Jannson (1596-1664) was a Dutch mapmaker during the "golden age" of Dutch cartography. He started out as a publisher and bookseller, but when he married the daughter of another map maker, Jodocus Hondius, he got into that business. In 1633 he and his brother-in=law (Henry Hodicus) produced the two volume edition of the Mercator Atlas. The present map shows Mexico City and points west, and the west coast of Mexico shown from present day Tuxpan to Acapulco de Juarez. A large cartouche shows a lion holding a sword on the top of the royal shield of Spain, which is flanked by a man and woman in Greek style togas. Portinaro and Knirsch p.315.

Nicols, Thomas
Small 4to, old calf with later rebacking, endpapers replaced, with folding table, [x], [10], 239 pp. Covers spotted, edges rubbed, hinges cracked, rubberstamping on endpapers and verso of chart, half of front blank lacking, scribbling on front and rear blanks, light browning to page edges; else very good. While his exact origins are not clear, Thomas Nicols may have been the son of a Dr. Nicols, and appears to have entered Jesus College in Cambridge in 1640. The first edition of this book (other editions published in 1653 and 1659) represents the first gemological work written and published by a British author. This work is divided into two sections; the first is a general treatise on the subject. The second provides descriptions of the characteristics of individual gemstones. Nicols seems to be an author who gives credit where credit is due; in that in his preface he indicates he used a lot of material from Boetius de Boot?s Gemmarum et lapidum (1st edition in 1609) and other authors. Nevertheless, this is a landmark work on the subject, which provides a scheme of classification, and presents a lot of very valuable personal experience with gems. ?A striking feature of the book, perhaps gained from personal experience, is his familiarity with the methods of enhancement of gems in their jewelry settings, also falsifications and adulterations, all of his statements regarding these areas being fresh and authoritative and suggesting a recent experience with gems and the manufacture of jewelry. Much of this information remains pertinent.?

PARKER, Henry
[London:] Printed [by E. Purslowe],, 1640. And most humbly presented to the Censure and Correction of the High Court of Parliament, Nov. 3. 1640. Small quarto (174 × 133 mm), pp. 49. Early 20th-century marbled boards, titled in gilt up spine, bookplate of Thomas Edward Watson, St Mary's Lodge, Newport. A very good copy. Listed in STC as the second printing ("policie" rather than "policy" in the title) of what "may be the first intellectually significant political pamphlet of the Long Parliament era. In this crisp and well printed quarto, Parker, a publicist and man of affairs, used issues raised during John Hampden's celebrated test case of 1637 to develop his own political views" (Michael Mendle, The English Experience: Its record in early printed books published in facsimile). From an important Sussex family, Parker (1604–1652) wrote anonymously, though he became well known under the moniker of the Observator in the pamphlet wars of the early and middle 1640s.

BARBERINO (Francesco)
(1640) Cicognara, 1985. [Click Below for Full Description]

GALLAND (Auguste);

Bollandus, J; Tollenaere, J
Antwerp: Ex Officina Plantiniana. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION of one of the most important and celebrated texts of the Jesuits; a seminal text in spreading the influence of the Jesuits during the Counter-Reformation. Complete with engraved title and 126 engraved emblems including two world maps and the famous "Leone Belgico". In beautiful contemporary binding. "In 1640 the Jesuit order celebrated its 100th anniversary, for which a large number of festivities had been planned. One of the most prestigious events was undoubtedly the publication by the Antwerp Officina Plantiniana of the Imago Primi Saeculi Societatis Jesu. This impressive folio volume would become an icon of the Jesuit order at that time. Though the initiative was highly contested, the Jesuit order itself considered the volume to be a great success, and regarded it as a highly persuasive form of self-representation. A huge tome numbering more than a thousand pages, The Imago presents a chronological-thematic account of the history of the order, and contains a large number of rhetorical exercises, poems and emblems. These emblems were integral to the festivities of the Society's centennial, while simultaneously functioning as emblematic exhibitions ("affixiones") in the Antwerp Jesuit Church" (Marc van Vaeck, "Emblematic Versatility as a Strategy of Self-Representation"). On the importance of emblems to the Jesuits: "The Jesuits were the principal disseminators of the symbolic language that was developed in emblems and allegories beginning in the sixteenth century. BESLER, Basil (1561-1629)
1640. Hand-coloured engraving. In excellent condition. Basil Besler published "Hortus Eystettensis", the earliest large folio botanical, at Eichstatt near Nuremburg, in 1613. He worked on the drawings for the 374 copper engravings over a period of sixteen years using the plants in the garden of Bishop Johann Conrad von Gemmingen, his patron. Depicted in this florilegium were flowers, herbs, vegetables and newly discovered plants such as tobacco and peppers. Besler was, in modern terms, a botanist and horticulturalist, and he was familiar with real and alleged medicinal properties of various plants. Besler had the good fortune to live at a time when exotic plants were being shipped to Europe from all over the world. The garden that he organized and illustrated for his patron was both ornamental and experimental, and the large book he had engraved after his drawings was unique. The prints, made by a team of master engravers, are strong and exquisitely done.
