BLAEU, Willem Janszoon.
Amsterdam, 1640, Latin edition. Original colour. 385 x 505mm. A decorative map of Eastern Africa with the fictitious kingdom of Prester John, the mythical Christian king. The map shows a wide section of central and eastern Africa including Mozambique north to present day Sudan. Highly embellished with elephants, ostriches and other animals within the map, as well as the decorative cartouche. The two Ptolemaic lakes of Zaire and Zaflan are in the lower portion of the map. Lake Niger, and the supposed course of the Niger River, is shown flowing westward. This map is based on Ortelius' map of Prester John of 1573. The myth of Prester John, the good Christian King of Africa waging his own crusade and defeating the enemies of Christianity, was based upon earlier legends of the Crusaders and is a fascinating piece of early mythological cartographic history KOEMAN: Bl 22. [8] '538' pages, with erratic page numbering throughout as usual, but complete. Engraved pictorial title by G. Glover, and 45 engraved portraits in the text [ one printed upside down]. Early calf recently re-backed; black gilt label. First edition. Some restoration to the title; two leaves with short marginal tears; some corners turned; small wormhole to lower blank margin; else a very good copy. Giovani Battista MANZINI
First edition, rare. Brand of printer in the title page. Translation of George Scuderi after delle Dissertazioni accademiche. Preface of the translator. Full vellum flexible time. Smooth back silent. The author himself calls his harangues "the fury of youth", thereby expressing that they are freed of the rules. The book contains 22 harangues which many on subjects from Greek mythology. The speeches are speeches, songs eloquently addressed to an audience; at the end of each speech, the result of the meeting is given; Each speech is preceded by an argument, a prologue to situate the issue of disboard. A fair example is that of Agamemnon had killed a sacred deer, which requires compensation Diane sacrifice of a young virgin, or Iphigenia, his daughter; the hero is for the military to express his fault and his paternal feelings. These Rants are reminiscent of the poetry contest qu'organisaient Greek on all known legends. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. MANZINI Giovani Battista
- Chez Augustin Courbé, à Paris 1640, Fort in-8 (11x17,4cm), relié. - Edition originale, rare. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] First edition, rare. Henri de Sponde (1568-1643) was a French clergyman, lawyer, ecclesiastical historian and editor successor to Caesar Baronius' work. He came from a family close to the French royal court, was a godson to the future King of France, Henry IV. Formerly a Calvinist, he was converted and ordained a priest in 1606 and was named the Bishop of Pamiers in 1626. For twenty years he attempted to carry out the decrees of the Council of Trent in this center of clashes between Protestants and Catholics along the border between France and Spain. These volumes are a continuation of Caesar Baronius' Annales Ecclesiastici . undertaken by Henri de Sponde during the last two decades of his life. It was written to counter the anti-Catholic history of the Protestants. A very good clean copy of this important early study of church history. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
