BLAEU WILLEM

Law. England.) [BRETON (John le, Bishop of Hereford)]
Printed by the assignes of Iohn Moore 1640 - 1 vol. bound in 2, interleaved, and annotated, with the Corrections divided between the volumes more or less as approriate (the 21 folios below), woodcut printer's device on title, main text (in Law French) in black letter, ff. [xvi], 64, 66-175, 175-238, 240-249, 245-287, [21], small 8vo, old calf, rebacked, corners very worn, sound. 'Britton' was first published in 1533, and edition which Wingate says is 'quite worn out, and exceeding full of manifest Imperfections.' The treatise is traditionally attributed to the Bishop of Hereford (d. 1275), but is largely derived from Bracton. There is an early ownership inscription, longitudinal, by the fore-margin of the title of a member of the Middle Temple, and another at the top of the title, 'Ed. Hatton, 17 Jan [18]17', the latter being the annotator. His notes, or quite often queries, are not all that prolific, but they do extend through the entire work. The previous owner, who signs himself 'Johannis Georgii', must be the John Georges (of Cirencester) who was admitted to Middle Temple 1st July 1615, then was called to the Bar in May 1623, made a Bencher in November 1651, and Treasurer in 1658 (with thanks to Renae Satterley of Middle Temple Library for this identification). "This French translation of Laet contains many materials not to be found in the original Dutch, chiefly vocabularies of Indian tribes. Dr. Asher was not able to procure a copy of this rare work" (Sabin 38558). « Thus the most complete is this French translation of 1640. In it de Laet narrates the sacking of Bahia and the conquest of Olinda, Itamaraca, Paraiba and Rio Grande de Norte" Borba de Moraes, 1983. BESLER, Basil (1561-1629)
Eichstatt, 1640. Hand-coloured engraving. Basil Besler published "Hortus Eystettensis", the earliest large folio botanical, at Eichstatt near Nuremburg, in 1613. He worked on the drawings for the 374 copper engravings over a period of sixteen years using the plants in the garden of Bishop Johann Conrad von Gemmingen, his patron. Depicted in this florilegium were flowers, herbs, vegetables and newly discovered plants such as tobacco and peppers. Besler was, in modern terms, a botanist and horticulturalist, and he was familiar with real and alleged medicinal properties of various plants. Besler had the good fortune to live at a time when exotic plants were being shipped to Europe from all over the world. The garden that he organized and illustrated for his patron was both ornamental and experimental, and the large book he had engraved after his drawings was unique. The prints, made by a team of master engravers, are strong and exquisitely done.

Bruges, Belgium. 1640. 1st edition. hb. Small 4to, Printed by Ian Baptiste and Lucas vanden Kerchove. Pagination: pp. (10), 208, (44), 112 (plates and maps), (58). . A compendium of the shields, escutcheons and crests of the nobles of Flanders, with illustrations thereof. Written in Flemish, and published duing the period of Spanish rule; hence the effusive dedication to King Philip of Spain. Bound in period half leather over what might best be described as printer's boards, now heavily scuffed and slightly bowed. Joints starting but binding holding nicely. Stain to first 30, or so, pages, extending down from top margin about half way. Pages a bit rolled from binding stress, otherwise (except as noted) contents clean and unmarked, especially those pages on which the copper engravings of medallions, crests and maps are displayed. Some early Dutch handwriting to inside front board. Name (early "copperplate") to inside rear board. Measures 27 x 19 cm. WorldCat notes only sixteen copies in libraries of the "Dutch" edition of this book. Similarly, WorldCat notes only one institutional holding of the 1640 German edition (The British Library, London), although we suspect that this is an error as the information provided suggests that the cataloger mis-identified this as a separate German edition (Flemish and German, especially in the old type fonts, appear very similar). Four copies have appared at auction in the last five years, with an average hammer price of just over $1,000 USD. .
