LAIRESSE, Gerard de.
1640. Bierens de Haan 2609; Kunst op schrift 137. Second edition of a popular practical manual teaching the art of drawing by the famous Dutch painter Gerard de Lairesse (1640-1711). The book is divided into two parts, the first part teaching young children in 12 lessons the principles of drawing based on geometry, and in the second part a more advanced course is given in 10 so-called "propositions" for professional art students, including a detailed plan for the installation of an Art Academy. Gerard de Lairesse, sometimes called the Dutch Poussin, devoted himself to teaching after he became blind in 1690. Being a classicist, his theories were mainly based on Junius's De pictura Veterum , and on Charles Dufresnoy's De arte graphica , but the practical side of his teaching, based on his own lifelong experience, gives his text books their special interest and importance. The treatise by Segner teaches how to construct lamps which were economic and efficient and also spared the artist's eye-sight. The plates extensively show how to construct such lamps as well as their oil-reservoirs. Slightly browned, with some faint, marginal foxing on only a few pages. Binding slightly rubbed along the extremities with some restorations to the spine. A very good copy in attractive binding.

LOVESICKNESS). FERRAND, JAMES [JACQUES]
Oxford: Printed by L. Lichfield, 1640. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. First published in Toulouse in 1610, then revised and reissued in Paris in 1623, this discussion of erotic melancholy enraged the Inquisition and inspired Robert Burton. Toulouse-trained physician Jacques Ferrand (b. ca. 1575) defines the symptoms, especially the mood swings from jocundity to deep melancholy, that accompany unreasonable passions, and recommends treatments to control them, from diet and rigorous exercise to bloodletting. The Inquisition took issue with Ferrand even mentioning astrology, chiromancy, and magic--even though he disparaged their claims--and with his frank discussion of sexual health. Perhaps his biggest offense, in their eyes, was presenting erotomania as a physical disorder to be treated by medical means when the Church considered it a sickness of the soul curable only by God and his ministers. Madan notes that "If Robert Burton was acquainted with the first edition of this book, as he may well have been, there can be little doubt that he has taken or imitated the general method and treatment of the subject, in his 'Anatomy of Melancholy.'" Burton certainly owned a copy of the Paris 1623 edition (N. K. Kiessling, The Library of Robert Burton, Oxford, 1988, no. 566). The translation here is by Edmund Chilmead (1610-54), a serious scholar of music and a cleric at Christ Church, Oxford, who supplemented his meager income by transcribing music, translating books, and cataloguing the collection of Greek manuscripts at the Bodleian Library.. 145 x 95 mm. Johannes JANSSONIUS
Amsterdam, 1640. Incisione in rame, finemente colorata a mano, in ottime condizioni. An important map of South East Asia, noteworthy for being amongst the first maps to include any information on the discoveries made by the Dutch vessel Duyfkens in New Guinea and the Gulf of Carpentaria in 1605-6. The map also includes Malaysia, Vietnam, the East India Islands, Philippines and Southern China as far as the Pearl River estuary. After Mercator's death, Jodocus Hondius continued publication of Gerhard Mercator's "Atlas" project from 1606 when he engraved new, and republished earlier, maps by the great cartographer. These maps formed the basis for one of the major multi-volume atlas projects of the century with maps republished by Jan Jansson and other Dutch publishers over 50 years later. This map, from a Latin text edition, was engraved by Jan Jansson and published from 1630. Copperplate, with fine later hand colour, very good condition. C. HERMANN, Paul.
1640. Hunt 378; Nissen, ZBI, 859; South African bibl., p. 345; Stafleu & Cowan 2684. First edition of a botanical catalogue of about 3300 plants in the botanical garden of Leiden University (106 illustrated), compiled and apparently drawn by Paul Hermann (1640-1695). Hermann had only recently introduced many to Europe from the East Indies, Ceylon, the Cape and America. Most entries give the Latin name of the plant with references to the literature; some give more detailed descriptions. Hermann, born in Halle an der Saale, sailed with the VOC (Dutch East India Company) to Ceylon in 1672 and collected many plants there. As a professor of botany and medicine at Leiden University, he directed the University botanical garden from 1679 to his death in 1695. He made it the richest garden in Europe during the Dutch golden age, always looking over his shoulder at his leading competitor, Jan Commelin at the Amsterdam botanical garden. "He did excellent, vigorous work in depicting his plants" (Hunt). His premature death prevented publication of a planned second part. With bookplate and initial stamp. With a stain in the gutter of some quires, slightly affecting the lower inside corner of the last few engravings, slightly foxed throughout and a few quires slightly browned, but generally in good condition. The binding is worn, with a crack in the back hinge and the leather flaked. An extensive and well-illustrated catalogue of plants in the Leiden botanical garden. [Attributes: First Edition]
